You know. For all the crying about future setting FPS that player always cry about, Battlefield 2142, at least imo, *have one of the most down to earth* future element in a future war FPS.
Yes, it have mech. Yes, it have hover tank, energy shield, etc.... but nearly everything else is down to earth and not far from what we are using today. ( Both side still use conventional weapon that is not differ much from today stuff)
And oh, unlike the other Futuristic FPS out there, Battlefield 2142, or specifically it's setting, is very interestin, because *it's very, very dark* . The war between EU and PAC isn't because of the clash of global influent, but *pure survival* , due to the Ice age and it's consequense. ;)

I always thought that, as a design, the devs kinda treated the L5 Reisig more like an attack helicopter aesthetically than a tank. Everything about it screams "can be useful if you don't expect to actually get hit", and the way the cannons are loaded is a lot more similar to how crews load 20mms on modern fighter jets and helicopters. The same goes for its ability to squat. It's kinda like how Apaches are expected to dip just above and then below terrain. L5 Reisig is a fire support vehicle, intended to kill a whole lot of infantry and then use its shields to survive ambush and then squat and survive.
Not very practical, but it does kinda make sense, at least aesthetically.

To the nekomata's credit, a casemate design makes WAY more sense on a hover tank than on a tracked vehicle.
Casemate designs eliminate the substantial added weight (especially important on a hover tank) and mechanical failure points that a turret adds, substantially reduce the height of the vehicle, as well as allow for much more effective distribution of armor for its weight since you can invest almost all of it on the front face of the vehicle, and it makes combining crew positions a bit more sensible since the gun's always facing the same direction as the driver.
Meanwhile, a hover tank's ability to move in any direction independent of its facing eliminates the most significant drawback of a casemate design- the Nekomata can still effectively engage while maneuvering.
That doesn't necessarily mean the nekomata's a good design, but for a hover tank, it's actually pretty good. Its main issues are really just the offset cannon and poor handling.

“Mantlets are made small for maximum armour protection and weight” I guess Stalin missed the memo (Kv-1, Kv-2, T-34/85, Is-2, Is-1, *all t-34s before 85*)

    • @builder396
      @builder396 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

In WWII mobility of fire wasnt considered as important yet (US beg to differ with their stabilizers here), thus speed of gun elevation was considered secondary to ensuring decent armor protection, especially against MG bullets jamming between the moving parts or entering the tank via odd angled ricochets. Thats why it wasnt such a big issue with tanks like Pz III, Panther and Tiger I that their entire turret front effectively was just the gun mantlet.
Also, even today its not written in stone that the mantlet must only be a tiny piece of moving plate barely large enough to fit the main gun, coax and in some cases the gun sight (in some cases thats seperated into a doghouse), though the main reason for that is that as a moving part, its difficult to apply much protection to it without making it interfere with the ability to still move, unbalancing the gun, etc. which is why on an M1 Abrams the mantlet is actually a fairly thin piece of armor only, mainly relying on people just not hitting it due to size, and even if they do, they will likely only disable the gun. On the other hand, Leopard 2 has a fairly wide mantlet with the same array of composite armor as the rest of the turret front, meaning that there is no detriment in protection there, and mobility of fire is still excellent, with the gun being fully stabilized and elevating absolutely rapidly. The extra mass of the armor doesnt seem to cause much issue there, because being close to the elevation trunnion anyway it doesnt require much extra force due to lack of leverage anyway.

    • @builder396
      @builder396 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@mcnuffin1208 Nope, they all had mantlets.
A gun mantlet is a piece of armor that elevates along with the gun and covers the opening it protrudes from, ideally in all elevations, and prevents shots from entering.
KV-2 is the only one on the list where the entire gun mount is very visibly bolted onto the outside (at least on the 1939 turret, the 1940 turret is more similar to the KV-1 turret, but upscaled in height to the same size as the 1939 turret), but thats not a mantlet, thats just the gun mount. All other tanks listed, KV-1, IS-1 and 2, T-34s of all variants, still had gun mantlets, but their guns were small enough that they could be swapped out without any external bolts just by going through the hole in the turret front (the mantlet would stay attached to the gun), as any points affixing it would be internal. This also means that the mantlet could be fitted more smoothly into the shape of the turret, which is probably why you made that assumption.

I would assume that by 2100 you would have working Fusion, not fission reactors. and more to the point, these fusion reactors would be about the size of a V-8 engine. Fusion reactors immediately lose containment and thus temperature containment and control and just cool instantly. This it the opposite of "Aliens" where the fusion reactor explodes like Castle Bravo.
Due to long standing rules concerning any form of nuclear power, the radiation emblem is used. Plus when the game"2142" was made common knowledge about Nuclear fusion was not available. Nor was information on weapons we don't fret much about being in the future like LAWs, LASERs, and advanced robotics.

Still wouldn't explain why there isn't armor covering the ammo boxes though. As for the MG on the A8, i believe that the belt could be fed through the turret if you compressed it down enough, however it would make reloading unwieldy.

I actually think they could've put proper microreactors in the mechs, especially with 120 years to play, I think that downsizing nuclear power would not be too difficult, given that there are airlift-capable reactors (vSMR) being conceptualized already. Plus, those mechs need what? Some 1500kW of power? Not that difficult to cool off, really, the cold air all around them would be beneficial for that.

I showed this video to our curator that takes care of our armored vehicles. He really enjoys your series.
In case you ever need more material...Other tanks/walkers you can look at
    - The Geth Walker and Mako Tank from the Mess Effect Series
    - Warhammer 40k has tones of walkers (Tau, Eldar, Orks, Impreium all use walkers)
    - The walkers from Iron Harvest
    - The vehicles from Planetside 2 (they also have some powersuits)
    - The Walkers from HAWKEN (they are take a different approach to walkers. Instead of being slow lumbering mechs, they are actually quick and nimble).
    - The vehicles from the starcraft series.
Another idea is to take a popular video game series where a real historical or modern tank is used in the game, and cover what is right and wrong in the game. You have already been kind of doing this in some of your videos.
Lastly, maybe you can make a video of what would be the most practical and ideal walker. Or maybe top 10 most practical vehicles you have covered. I know top 10 videos are rather over done, but I am just spitting out ideas.

Having a turretless design isn't entirely bad. It reduces the weight and profile of the tank.
Turrets and all the parts associated with them add a lot of weight and forces the tank's design to be taller and more conspicuous than it otherwise would be.
You can do a lot with the saved weight that comes with forgoing a turret; say improve ammo capacity, extra armor, a bigger main gun, or just do nothing with the weight savings and enjoy the better mobility and fuel efficiency.
Because it's a hover tank the reduced weight is desirable because it means you don't need as beefy of a propulsion system for the same mobility, plus, the weight of a turret shifting around as it rotates and the recoil sending it in different directions would cause problems for a hover tank, lest the thing just rolls over and disables itself because it fired while the gunner and the driver weren't on the same page. If this hover tank had a turret, the chassis would have to be considerably wider to deal with those issues, which comes with its own issues (inability to fit in places, more weight, harder to transport, bigger target, etc).
In the case of a tracked tank, the reduced profile makes it easier to camouflage allowing for better ambushes.
As well it eases manufacturing and reduces the costs of manufacturing and maintaining the tank due to the reduction of sensitive moving parts.
Not to say that it doesn't have its downsides, they're terrible against a guerrilla opponent, but the improved protection of not having a turret and the logistics benefits of lower cost, easier maintenance, more simplistic construction, lighter weight and ease of transportation are all pretty significant things to take into account.
You could field more of them for the same cost and have an easier time getting them onto the field in the first place, against a conventional army that's huge.

Well, the size of the mech is fairly reasonable. They are about the same size as titanfal titans, just more beef on the bones. Feet could be larger to accommodate the weight like you said.
But I remember playing this game. The mechs were not meant for open ground combat. You get in one of them and you get it to dense cover environments like Forrests or urban center as soon as possible. These things were great in urban combat. The added height gave them better angles on infantry hidden behind walls and better angles on those on 2nd floor buildings. This made mechs great for holding a majority of map objectives (as they were often amongst cover).to be fair this is based off the last time I played this game...around a decade ago i think.
Just like titanfall, these mechs are not meant for open ground (leave that to the tanks).battlefield has always been about combined arms warfare, letting players check out the different vehicles and how to play with them based on their strengths and weaknesses that would depend on the battlefield. This is probably why I have my views of mechs being urban fighting vehicles, while keeping the tanks in open combat. that view was enhanced by 2142....I miss this game.

Currently webcams on laptops are about as small as they can practically get while maintaining performance. I'd point out that i'm 6"1' and i'm barely taller than a leopard 2 hull standing beside it, you can prone under the A8 tiger and the player model doesn't clip it which is in line with most modern MBT's. The bulky side skirts are actually a benefit for maintenance since they look like they come in separate pieces which means they can be removed individually instead of having to swap out the entire skirt, again the Leopard 2 does this with its armored side skirts.

The L5 mech's main guns, missiles and anti personnel gun are all practical in the game. The cockpit is enclosed, using cameras to create a digital display inside the cockpit protecting the driver, which is suitable for the setting. The L5 mech can also couch to reduce its profile, and would help the crew to bail out.
In all probability a downed L5 crew would wait for rescue, they probably have equipment to climb in and out like you would for a fighter jet bsck at base.
The A8 tank has reactive armour on its side panels, a non explosive kind. So it's practical. The ADS isn't a shield, it acts like one but for short durations.
Both L5 and A8 lack thermal imaging, smoke launches/decoys, but you could pretend that smoke is no longer used for concealment due to everything in the future being able to see through it, hence no thermals. In gameplay you never feel like a feature is lacking and the fact this tank has only 2 crew, the whole loading process is now automated, and the driver can also control the turrent is very advanced.
The size of the tank is deliberately large, its actually classified as a heavy tank, this implies a much more armoured MBT requirement, probably due to mechs and infantry weapons.
The plasma instead of gas operated weapons, and hover tech is just the fantasy aspect of the setting. The Japanese tank is an odd design, I pretend that a rotating turrent would sway the chassis causing instability, but the mobility of the hovering was worth it for traversing terrain.
It's easy to make up excuses for sci fi as long as there is a justification for it within the fictional lore, and because of that I think all the vehicles are fantastic.

And the A7V "Heavy Tank" in BF1 takes only 5 people to fully crew, even though irl it needed easily quadruple that (they were also used as makeshift APCs, allowing infantry to dismount flamethrowers from off the tank to use in combat)

As if they were giant mortar tubes. They take up a lot of space on the rear corners of the turret. The exhausts are the back of those tubes. The front ones are just like smoke launchers or something. The rear ones are the business. Sadly not animated, and DICE seemed to go with the front ones only.
