My Grandfather was a U.S. airman that was shot down during WW II. He was sent to a POW camp in Thailand. The suffering he endured there was horrendous. He very rarely spoke of it, but he told me once that his Japanese captors considered him a lessor man because he was captured and didn't die for his country. That haunted him until he died.
Thank you Thailand and Wayne for honouring our brothers and family x Grandad was one of the lucky ones who came home. He didn't know I had married a wonderful Thai lady until I took my wife to meet him in England. First time I ever saw him cry, told me that the local Thai people would find a way to feed him and his mates....
Thank you for bringing this to your channel, during the war my grandad who was in British intelligence had to walk through Burma and who was left for dead with cholera, it took him two years to get home, he was one of the lucky ones! God rest all their souls x
Thanks Wayne, I visited there 30 years ago, it was very undeveloped, no museum, just very authentic and so very sad😢. Thank you for taking me there again , I shed some more tears .... tears of respect.
So as the Jewish people who survived hitler my father inlow was abble to sit in the aftrnoon for hours not noticing how much time escaping from him he would never talk about how he lust his grandfather and father. And now we are in the bigest "war "of all the 20-21-22 Its keep repeting its just getting biger and more money 💰
Wayne, a truly wonderful tribute and it's plain to see you were moved. I've been to the dawn service on ANZAC day and it will remain with me forever, the world cannot forget the sacrifice those men made. Lest we forget
Thank you! It was a tough one to film. It must be very emotional on ANZAC, that would be something I'd love to see in the future. The people who died here was my only concern when doing this video. So tragic and something we'll all never forget. Thanks.
I've always been welcomed by the locals of Kan. I think this is one of the reasons why. They are aware of those horrendous events that took place 80+ years ago and there is a special kind of respect amongst the locals ,whom had relatives that perished. I love Kanchanaburi & it's wonderful people. I'm happy you are enjoying this special place. Stay safe Wayne & enjoy.
The Buddha speaks of Greed Hatred and Delusion its all there at the Hellfire Pass, the human tragedy of War, may we eventually learn ... That was beautifully filmed Wayne
It is harrowing there Wayne, i visited on one Anzac anniversary year it was very moving, we where down in hellfire pass before dawn it was all lit by candles, it was a haunting vision, then when we returned back up top there was a large projector screen which we watched archived footage. When we got back to the main Kanchanabury road going down to the bridge it was one big get together, beers where flowing, tables full of food and lots of the senior Australian soldiers dressed so smart with there medals, friends meeting friends it was great. Cheers and thanks.
Brilliant Wayne. Was in Kanchanaburi last weekend and it was an incredibly emotional place. As you said, there’s a feeling there. Thanks for being respectful and safe travels.
Wow! Wayne thank you. I am visiting Hellfire Pass on the 21st June 24. I will be bringing a British Legion Wreath and thanks to you, I now know where to lay it. You held yourself together very well. As for the jokers and laughters, I wouldn't be able to keep quiet so well done and thank you again. Ian
Thanks Ian, it was a tough one to film. Great that you'll be laying a Wreath mate 🙏. I must add, they wasn't laughing about the Hellfire Pass, but walking around in general laughing and Joking. But still not the place to do it. Thanks Ian.
Amazing vlog mate I am British born and bred this vlog bought a tear to my eyes the suffering those guys went through was unexplainable it got me very emotional it was so sad and you are an amazing guy for doing this thanks so much Wayne it's opened my eyes to the pain and suffering they felt god rest there souls thanks again mate
Very emotional and respectful video. Guessing you are now glad you chose the diversion to your travels to visit this city. Not your usual upbeat content, but so necessary to visit tragic sites like this to make you think about horrific events in history. This place, like Cambodias Killing Fields and Auschwitz left me walking away a different person. Everybody that can, should visit these places to get a perspective of how ugly the world can often get. Excellent video, Wayne.
Thank you mate. Yes, I'm so glad I came to Kanchanaburi. I didn't have any plans to come here. It sure is a ugly world man. I will remember this video forever.
Kanchanaburi is my favourite province in Thailand. I visited Hell fire Pass ..it was very humbling. Your video was heartbreaking 💔..You paid massive respect to the fallen heroes..God bless them 🙏❤
G'day Wayne on both trips to Hellfire pass i teared up...just such an emotional place. Watching your vlog made me tear up again. Thanks for the Vlog mate. Cheers Steve
Awsome tribute to all that suffered mate Visited Hellfire pass 15 years ago. Hard to explain the atmosphere there . The hairs stand up on the back of your neck and you can definitely feel the presence of the fallen.
As an Australian who was at Hellfire Pass this passed January24 this vlog has brought back so many emotions and sitting here at midnight in the comfort of my home and watching this I now once again have tears running down my cheeks.....As I walked along the same path in January and reaching the cutting I tried to imagine what it must have been like for those prisoners it was truly a solemn moment....If there is a "Hell on Earth " than at that time this was surely it for all those that were on this railway construction line....May God bless them all....RIP...........This vlog was amazing thankyou Wayne for bringing this to us..Keep up the great work and enjoy the rest of your travels stay safe mate.🙏🙂
Wayne this was very moving. Being a Veteran myself as was my father and Grandfather I did not realise that 13 Kiwis died here in hell's pass along with many more British Australian and American service men. On the 25th April ANZAC Day each year here in New Zealand and Australia we recite the following ode. " They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them." thanks mate
Thank you, it was a very tough day and I'll always remember this day. Thank you for sharing your story, it's always great to here from people. Yes, ANZAC day is coming, I wish I could have stayed for that. Thank you buddy.
You actually made me cry walking through the pass. As you said if you go it’s something you will never forget. Brought back all the feelings I had when I went. 💔
Sorry for making you cry, I had a few tears making it also. This is my most important and hardest vlog. Hope all is well and hope the vlogging is going ok.
Still gathering my thoughts after watching this. So moving, traumatic at times with the reality of what happened there… in the not so distant past too. 100% respect to you Wayne for your coverage of that. Thanks for sharing. Take care and all the best mate.
Without doubt the best vlog you've ever done Wayne, very moving. Respect 🙏 Having been there myself, your video bought all the feeling & emotion back to me x
Excellent video Wayne thank you 🙏🙏🙏it's a travesty that the super powers of the world are still fighting wars today they haven't learnt A thing, Greed $$$ and power over human beings, living peaceful lives. Love and peace brother
Yes Wayne, you done something today that is right up there in the most ever respectful things to do list.Very, very grateful and thankyou so much for sharing.Lest we forget all our brothers and Thai friends.I just cant stop wondering.
The last time I was there I had a surreal experience. Where the black memorial stone is parts of the surrounding forest was on fire and deep in the valley miles away I could clearly hear a monk chanting, Yes it certainly does get to you, once more in Kanchanaburi district I was in tears ...
Thanks for sharing this Vlog Wayne. Lot of history there in that town eh. It brings things into perspective I think especially in this modern age we live in. I can say I have never really had any real struggles in life, it's been pretty good too be honest. We forget about what hardship others had in the past an it's essential that we allways remember
Yes, so much history here, I can feel it all around. It's a town at peace though. I will be sad to leave, but I must move on soon. Lest we forget mate 🙏
That must have tore deep into your heart walking through Hell fire pass knowing that not every one survived that ordeal. I can't even begin to imagine how it must have been for those poor souls. Even now looking at your Vlog I can't help myself from crying
Wayne. I really think you showed this one with great feeling and respect. What a privilege to be there and show that respect in your own way. I enjoy watching your trips. This one was exceptionally well presented. Thank you Lest we forget.
My favourite vlog from u thus far Wayne. Thank u for taking me through this tribute through your camera. I did not have the privilege of visiting this place during my stopover in kanchanaburi due to time constraint (was on a motorbike and got rained on 3 separate occasions throughout the day). I ate at the same petrol station too but patronised the shop on the left instead, very decent pad Krapao.
Thanks Wayne for an amazing walkabout. The currency of human life used to complete this project is unimaginable. I wonder if those responsible were held to account or not ? The terrain beyond the memorial seems too steep for a railway . Can’t See how a train could get through. The rocks cry out with the voices of those who perished . Heavy atmosphere. The place demands respect and flippant behaviour not appropriate.
Thanks mate. It was a very sad day. I was reading that some were accounted for. The pass does seem very narrow, I guess it's just enough room for a train to pass. Thanks.
Thanks Wayne beautiful Vlog, I have only been as far as the Bridge over the river Kwai, very moving , both my Grandfathers were in world war 2 , unfortunately one of them was killed. I also try and reflect when I visits such places, absolute horror what these men went through , once again there are wars going on in the world ,it would seam the human race will never learn. Cheers chris Australia
Thanks Chris, I will always remember this vlog mate. This is one of a few, that means the most. Thanks for sharing about your Grandfathers. It's horrific what they had to go through. We have it so easy. Cheers mate.
@@WalkAboutWayne I also watched your Phayao vlog with my Thai mother in law who comes from Phayao she lives with us at the moment in Melb she has been here 50 years , but still has a house there and much family and visits often. I’ve shown her many vlogs on Phayao and yours was her favourite! I love it there, what a great town , hopefully might live there 6 months of the year when we retire , due to visit there again next year, Cheers Chris

Respect to you and the way you presented this - it’s a special place . I’m glad you went and showed everyone, I know it’s a sad & tragic place but I will always remember it as a highlight of Thailand 🙏🙏🙏
great job wayne you show a lot of respect to the fallen soilders i was there 5 weeks ago to lay some poppys and pay my respect its a very emotional place god bless you
My art teacher at my school in london from 71 to 76 was one of those brave men. His name was mr Warren and he was all bent over on his back. Must have been from having to carry heavy loads. He was also in Singapore and did some famous paintings in a cave to cheer up the other prisoners. There is a book about him. Rip Stanley Warren a lovely kind man
A very moving vlog Wayne, really thought provoking. Wonderfully filmed, it actually moved me to tears. You're a good man Wayne. A good man. I'm moving to Thailand this year and will Definitely be visiting these sites and places you have shone a light on over last few videos. Many thanks
I was in Kanchanaburi in February this year, I was in the hotel right beside the bridge , the bridge is original, although it was bombed by the allies and 2 of the support was blown up but later replaced, the other original wooden bridge is a few hundred metres away situated at the museum, the so called prisoner of war camp is false, I was talking to one of the tourist police and Australian who has lived there a while who informed me that the camp is false and the real camp is situated a few miles away near the military cemetery. Kanchanaburi is such a beautiful place and a must to visit and remember the sacrifices of those who were there.
That's right, you can still see the bomb damage on the bridge Pilars. Yep, the camp is fake and used as a bar area in the past, which I didn't agree with. Kanchanaburi is a special place. I met the Australian guard also 👍
One cannot fathom thousands of young men, most in their early 20's, being worked to death. Perhaps it is best that we cannot comprehend such a thing. RIP to all these brave young lads, who never had a chance to grow up.
Sad place Wayne, good video though - i just wanted to add a bit of positive info. There was a Aussie Doctor/Surgeon by the name of Ernest Edward Dunlop (Nick named "Weary" ) who looked after 1,000 POW's with a few other doctors in the Prison camp , he often put himself between a prisoner and the Japanese that were going to Bayonet the Pow, he wrote a book " The War Diaries Of Weary Dunlop" Java And The Burma - Thailand Railway 1942-1945, he was a Tough man played Rugby and was a Champion Boxer who stood 6'4"., He must have saved dozens of mens lives, he was Knighted for his brave work but not until 1969. i remember a Lady who was his secretary saying that Weary didn't Bill/Charge ex serviceman who came for a Consultation. He had a big Heart.
Thanks Steve! I've been watching documentaries about that Doctor, some great stuff about him online. I rewatched the film also, he's like the go-between in that also. I will have to look out for the book. Great info mate, thanks for sharing.
Awesome vlog mate , been to Hell fire past a few times highly recommended. It’s a shame they cut down the tree which stood in the middle of the hell fire past , that said awesome job mate
Thanks Wayne so much my great uncle and other members fought for Our country never forget them and all the romany gipsys that went to war for the uk and the Burmese 🇲🇲 the Europeans and many others we remember all of them thank God for them Wayne
This place it s amazing and you can see how they work so hardest poor soldiers the museum so nice thanks this video so nice the second walk need do on morning and have some water better use stick to walk
I just did the full walk Sept 9th 24 and the difference is huge in regards to the greenery. I did the full walk and it gets more intense, just remember the rock had to be hand drilled or hammer and tap before the dynamite could be used, you can see these marks from the drills all along the wall. Its a very emotional journey. Dont underestimate the full walk I came back drenched and only had sturdy thongs, but the men were in in barefeet that worked and died here. I agree totally about the lack of respect from some people on the pass. Its a placweto reflect not just get selfies and laugh.
Massive respect for taking us there my Grandad was a POW at Hellfire Pass he was one of the lucky ones who made it home safely thanks Wayne so such a sad place RIP to all who sadly we lost 😢
Wayne...Someone asked..."What if everyone in rhe world refused to die for their country?" ( Or for the one percent). Don't know. But reminded me of the old star trek show where the advanced aliens made all weapons to scorching hot to handle. Both adversaries agreed that this was a outrage. They had a right to kilk each other.
You learn, i learn and when u open up a contry for learning about the world ,they still think to invaid a contry in 2022 is what the right ting to do, and 100 mill idiots are agree , say it all🤑
All adverts are off for this video, as my respect for the heroes who lost their lives here. 🙏

Rip Stanley Warren a lovely kind man
Wow, thanks for sharing that story 🙏. RIP Stanley 😞
Good ones 😂 my friend I going to check out that area when I come back . 🎉 cheers
Thanks. It's well worth visiting.
A very moving vlog Wayne, really thought provoking. Wonderfully filmed, it actually moved me to tears. You're a good man Wayne. A good man. I'm moving to Thailand this year and will Definitely be visiting these sites and places you have shone a light on over last few videos. Many thanks
Thank you Jack, it was very hard filming it also. This vlog means the most to me.
Nice one Wayne.
Cheers Mike 🙏
Well said Dan, mate 🙏
Best series of vlogs you’ve ever done. Totally agree jokes, vest tops and short shorts, should be left at the car park. Lest we forget❤️💔
Thank you. This is the vlog that I will never forget. Yes, I think fun and games should be left until later.
Fantastic mate 😢
Thank You 🙏
Sad place Wayne, good video though - i just wanted to add a bit of positive info.
A haunting glimpse of our somber past. Sad to think we will never have a great want of such exhibitions because of something innate within us all.
David 🙏🙏🙏

Hard to know that the same species that is capable of immense charity is also capable of incomprehensible cruelty.😢

Yes, this is a video I will never forget. One of my most cherished vlogs. It was an honour to be here.
Thank you wayne
Thank you 🙏
I just did the full walk Sept 9th 24 and the difference is huge in regards to the greenery.
Yep, this day will stay with me forever. Kanchanaburi is a very emotional place. Thanks.
Massive respect for taking us there my Grandad was a POW at Hellfire Pass he was one of the lucky ones who made it home safely thanks Wayne so such a sad place RIP to all who sadly we lost 😢
Thank you mate! And thanks for sharing that story about your Grandad. It's crazy how the world is right.
that was good .
Thank you 🙏
There's a campsite nearby called Hin Tok where the POWs stayed and alot sadly passed away there. RIP
I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
❤
🙏🙏🙏
An omelete is 'Kai-Jee-ow' and with rice is kai-jee-ow khao suai. I like it for breakfast.
Yep 👍 knew that years ago. I have it nearly every day.
Very touching tribute ❤
Wayne...Someone asked..."What if everyone in rhe world refused to die for their country?" ( Or for the one percent). Don't know. But reminded me of the old star trek show where the advanced aliens made all weapons to scorching hot to handle. Both adversaries agreed that this was a outrage. They had a right to kilk each other.
Interesting 🤔
Looks really narrow as if a train couldnt fit through, but maybe it's just the camera
Probably the camera mate. I wouldn't say there was much room either side though, once the train was going through.
My bet is we will have a similar situation when North Korea is liberated
I hope not 😒
You learn, i learn and when u open up a contry for learning about the world ,they still think to invaid a contry in 2022 is what the right ting to do, and 100 mill idiots are agree , say it all🤑
🙏🙏🙏
Not as worse as the changi beach massacre or saint join island but more on the cruelest and gut wrenching level 😅
