2020 Yamaha Tricity 300 - New Model Overview

  • Yamaha have announced a Tricity 300 for 2020, offering a new three-wheeled offering in the Tricity 155 and Niken family, but this time aimed at the more performance orientated scooter segment, with a 300cc powerplant making for a better two-up machine and all-round performer.
    When I tested the Tricity 155 one of my thoughts was actually that it would be great to see a 300cc version, using the Blue Core XMAX powerplant, because particularly here in Australia with bigger distances and higher speeds to cover it makes sense to move up to that next level of performance if you need more than just a city run-around.
    We haven't got the full specifications yet, but the 2020 Yamaha Tricity 300 offers the LMW Ackerman suspension and front setup, allowing for impressive lean angles with a dual-fork each side setup.
    I'm guessing power will be about 35 horsepower, so similar to the 2019 XMax, and Yamaha have stated it'll be tuned to suit the Tricity 300, which is likely to be heavier due to the technology involved with the three-wheeled setup.
    Full disc brakes on 14 inch wheels retain an all-round ability, with traction control and premium scooter features ensuring the Tricity 300 should be popular. There's even room for two full face helmets under the seat, and a remote fob for turning the bike on and accessing the various features, like fuel and under seat storage.
    Overall a cool addition to the line-up and while we can't ride these on a car licence as they can in some parts of the world, a great entry point for some potential riders to get started on, and no doubt a great commuter option as well.

    Australians are a long way behind Europe when it comes to adopting scooters as urban transport. People who think they need a 1800kg car to navigate the city are there own worst enemy. Thanks for shining a light on these bikes.

      True, it's a real shame too, as when you look at the culture in Italy for instance the same thing would work well here in so many areas, while reducing congestion and parking issues too. And our weather is so good for so much of the year, it's perfect for it.

    The Specs here in Europe indicate a 27hp Blue Core engine. I am eager to test ride it, but have concerns about the limitations of this engine paired with the extra weight. We'll see how it goes in May or June when they become available.

      @MotoJournoKris  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea I think the source I referred to with the power figure had attributed the XMax 400 performance to the 300, where you're right about what's actually on offer. It will be interesting, riding the 155 I didn't feel like it was lacking, but then riding the NMax 155 you realised the difference the weight made.

    This is not even on the Japanese domestic Yamaha website yet.
    It may not be available here.
    If this is a 300 only release, and if Yamaha does not make a 250 version, it will probably be a non-Japanese-market-only bike. That is because the per-24-month mandatory safety check here is for anything over 249cc. For example, there is no Yamaha Xmax 300 model here for the same reason - it is a 250 version.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a real shame, as the 300 is a great platform. Maybe you'll get a 250cc version - if you've got an XMax 250, the 250 segment seems to have a few markets where it still is the go-to choice for riders, and they are big markets. They changed the CTP rates here in NSW down to 226cc (or something like that) so that all small capacity machines needed to pay significantly more to stay on the road each year, that was a while back now though. Does not needing to have the 24 month check make a big difference to upkeep/on-road costs?

    I wonder though what it's like for lane splitting looks a bit wide.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They reckon it's only 815 mm wide, compared to the XMax 300 being 775 mm so not a huge difference, but I'll be interested to see how that converts into real feel.

    i ride the 155 tricity - LOVE IT.
    was looking forward to upgrading to the 300 - but when i saw the weight, i was intensely disappointed - 259kg?!?!? WAAAAY too heavy!!

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I saw 239kg wet, but it's still a fairly hefty weight. It'll be interesting to see how it rides and if you notice that weight. That was one area I noticed on the Tricity 155, the extra weight is noticeable compared to the NMax for acceleration, especially taking off.

    I must admit I don't get them. The extra stopping power is pretty much the only advantage I can see, and a bunch of downsides, BUT for whatever reason there's a definite segment of the scooter market that like them so the more the merrier!

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have heard from quite a few people with back or leg/hip problems, who can have trouble with the weight of a motorcycle, which makes it risky for them. I do kinda hope it brings people people into motorcycling though, if they are a bit nervous about just two wheels, it's definitely the more the merrier!
