Great video, Gary. It’s interesting how the camera gives a different perspective being just a bit higher than your eyes. Clear view of clinches while cutting and whatnot. If you ever have another run of the “Give it some beans” shirt I’d buy a hoodie.

Mx2 Martin I believe concrete and other man-made surfaces can damage their hooves. It’s like humans wearing shoes, so our feet don’t hurt when we walk.
Shadeskast I’ve started wearing them when it’s muddy or really cold, I find my hands suffer a lot these days. Yes, a barn full of little Tia’s would be great!
somekid you are looking for solid hoof wall, trying to avoid old nail holes or broken up pieces. Try to drive them about a third to half way to the wall do you get solid clinches and no lost shoes
So satisfying. Thanks for another great video. I am curious, why is it you and all the other ferriers only change two shoes at once? Why not go ahead an knock the others out. I keep having a feeling like his other hoofs are still 'dirty' :)
aaaah awesome. Ok. So you only need to trim them down For shoes? I know in the wild they run so much it keeps them will low hoovez but how often do you maintenance trim a domesticated non-shoed mare
Can I ask, do you prefer it when the owners clean/pick out horses hooves before you start working, or do you not mind? Also, I love the loveheart shoe on your forge!!
No I mean if it's not well taken care of after? Like if the owners decided to have the shoes removed but the farrier didn't even that notch out? Just a question, I've had horses for a long time I've just never seen a shoe with a clip like that. You do a wonderful job though!
No, I just happened to work on a farm as a boy where a newly qualified Farrier built a forge. We got talking and after a year I started working for him, got an apprenticeship and the rest as they say is history!
ive seen on a lot of other farrier videos that the horses they are horseshoeing have little to none of the white stuff by the frog, and the frog is really thin. do you why this is?
the white on the horse frog is the natural colour of the hoof he is just removing all of the grime it will grow back because it is just like a finger nail. hope this helps :)
Owners in this country must hire a professional as it's illegal to shoe a horse if you are not qualified. At present it's roughly £70 upwards for a set.
It does not hurt the horse, it just is like putting it on the (toenail) of the horse. But of course it is a lot thicker than our nails. Basically it just helps imprint how to reshape the horseshoe make it fit better. You want it as exact as possible of course, for maximum comfort and ease for the horses joints and movement. :)
@@ssidradumercer2038 If the horse is not well behaved, gets spooked, or the farrier makes a mistake, then they sure will get kicked. Just depends on the personality of the horse. Some are used to it and very well behaved, others you need to watch out for more.
Their hoof is really just one big thick nail for horses. As long as done right, it won't hurt them one bit. It helps them morelike. You can read up more online. :)
The hoof is made of Keratin like your hair or your nails. It hurts as much as a haircut unless done wrong, or by someone who isn't a registered Farrier, then, you can hurt the horse. Horse shoes are fitted, and help with many things. If you don't clip your own finger nails for a year think of all the problems that could arise, same goes for a horse, however worse and more hazardous things could occur since they walk on that "nail"

Thanks for replying! It annoyed me when you picked up her hoof and you could barely see the shoe, it was that mucky.
Gary we love it when they pick out their feet before we do them, that means we are getting paid when we are done. 😊😊

Hi Gary, two questions.
What are you doing with the claw of your hammer to the nails?
What is the reason to only doing two shoes at a time?
Cutting the ends off and because she only wears fronts.
what does the burning smell like?
Kinda like burnt hair, not a great smell.
Probably like burnt hair since its made of the same material.

I'm wondering if those particular shoes cause seedy toe? Or can cause it from clipping back that notch on the toe?
Lol! Don’t be ridiculous!

The state of the foot has nothing to do with getting seedy toe or not. It’s an anaerobic bacteria. The notch for the clip is not a problem.
How did you get into this profession
He probably grew up with it and became one? Idk just a guess 🤔

What is the reason for hot shoeing a horse verses just putting new on?
Gideon Conger better fit and easier to shape the shoes.
ive seen on a lot of other farrier videos that the horses they are horseshoeing have little to none of the white stuff by the frog, and the frog is really thin. do you why this is?
the white on the horse frog is the natural colour of the hoof he is just removing all of the grime it will grow back because it is just like a finger nail. hope this helps :)
All horses feet are different Michelle, they have walls and soles of different thickness's and the frogs vary in size too.
Is there an age when you should stop shoeing your horse Gary or is it fine to shoe the horse through retirement and all that or no pls give advice
You can shoe for as long as they can comfortably pick up their feet!
Why do you cut of the upper part of the hove?
Sorry, you will have to be more specific, which part?
@@garyhuston when you put the shoe on and it doesn't fit, you cut of a peace of the hove and try if it fits again. Why do you do that?
Do you mean at 8:38? If so it’s so the clip can fit flush with the foot.
That was my question, thankyou 😁
Curious do most horse owners hire someone to do this or do it themselves and what does this service cost

@@garyhuston thanks For the reply Gary
Wait a minute do you have to do this with goats?! 🤔
If their feet grow too long, yes.

Yes but you only have to trim them tho and not shoe them like a horse
