    I know why 18,000 people watched this in less than 24 hours.
    Its ASMR for horse folks. No talking makes it very satisfying.
    Also Gary has an amazing rapport with his clients, some of them are huge animals. Thank you for great content Gary!

    grandpa used to raise and own racing horses, so I saw quite a bit of horseshoeing as a kid. The lady was a bit intimidating, but the horses never minded her at all - she worked with my grandpa's horses for about two decades. Grandpa took good care of them, the oldest was about 25 before he was put down. Love watching your vids, reminds me of the old days.

      Slamalamadingdangdong it’s called a frog. It’s used as a shock absorber and a way to help a horse circulate its blood by pushing blood back up the leg with every step. It’s very sensitive. And you have to be extremely careful when trimming back the excess.

    I dont know anything about horses except that you can ride them. Can the horse feel you cleaning and scraping its hoof? Is it something like a human fingernail? Can you go too deep?

    • @ashpumpkin7967
      @ashpumpkin7967 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No butt the nails is 2 to 6 inches long so u can go pretty deep

    • @larrybrown6068
      @larrybrown6068 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you can see is the hoof capsule, it encloses the sensitive stuff. So yes you can go too deep, how deep is too deep depends on the thickness of the hoof wall and the sole and this varies from horses to horse.

  • @sawspandabear

    I absolutely love watching your videos. But I have a dumb question from a non-horse owner. At what point do you decide against reworking the shoes and just tossing them and putting on new ones?
    Also how do you decide if the horse needs shoes, and if they need a full set or just fronts or just hinds?

    • @bevakathedementedraccoon
      @bevakathedementedraccoon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      shoes are generally put on new, then re-used at the next shoeing if they haven't been too worn down with exercise etc. they don't generally get used 3 times or more. two times is the max my geldings ever had his used anyway lol. full set is usually if the horse is doing more work, on roads a lot etc, fronts only if not doing as much work. hope that helps. if i'm wrong i'll happily let gary say so lol

    I shoed my donkey on Saturday. It took hours to do because I need more practice and the donk won't hold still. Plus, it would work better if I was a smaller person, more proportional to the working height off the ground. I put the hind shoes on, then let it graze. Then went back a couple of hours later and put the fore shoes on. The donk acted like it did not like the hammering. She has been a pet and gets her way, but it makes it difficult when she won't stay in one place...…… but, when the car alarm went off and, later, a large black wasp hovered around both of us, she tried to move around quite a bit, understandably.

    excuse me if i’ve asked this before but, what i’d like to know is how can farriers slice of parts of the frog but when i’m picking a horses hoof and accidentally press a bit too hard on the frog they instantly flinch and put their foot down ? let me know :)

      elle I guess you’re doing it wrong 😂😂

    • @ellie-pm9hp
      @ellie-pm9hp 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Huston no, seriously, cus the frog holds all the nerves and that’s why when you pick out hooves you’re careful not to press too hard on the frog so it doesn’t hurt, right ?

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      elle I don’t know where you are getting your information but no, the frog doesn’t have any nerves, it is insensitive and protects the sensitive structures beneath. You can beat on it as much as you like just don’t go jabbing a hoof pick down the clefts as this is were the join is at its thinnest and may cause some discomfort.

    • @ellie-pm9hp
      @ellie-pm9hp 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Huston ah that’s right, sorry i know it doesn’t have nerves, i just thought it had more sensitivity than other parts. my bad, i worded it incorrectly.
      (edit), i was researching and found this;
      “the frog likely has a role with proprioception (a horse's awareness of where his feet and body are), with sensitivity a bit like the nerves at the ends of our fingertips”
      so i guess that was sort of where i was going when i said ‘nerves’

    • @rebeccawilliams9415

      ellie I got taught this when learning as a kid too, I think they just tell you these things to stop kids being stupid and hurting the horse if they do it wrong and then they grow up thinking that and pass it on and so on.

      Not all of them, mostly machine mades these days, when I was an apprentice we made all our own shoes, did that for many years.

    I have a question why do you reshoe the horse even though your putting the same horseshoe on, I mean is it neccesary?

    • @shaef8863
      @shaef8863 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean I'm pretty sure the hoof needs to be cleaned or else it gets infected or something

    • @larrybrown6068
      @larrybrown6068 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The hoof grows and needs trimming, otherwise the foot gets long and overgrows the shoe.

      Victor Gryszkiewicz I doubt it. I’ve seen horses fall asleep while getting horseshoed. I think it’s relaxing to them, but I’m not a horse lmao.

      Why’s there always this stupid question on these videos? These guys are clearly professionals. They wouldn’t be hurting animals and broadcasting it online. So it’s definitely not hurting the animals. And if it did, they’d have been kicked by the horses! There’s a severe problem with critical thinking for these questions to always pop up.
