    Lockheed blackbird SR71 was made almost entirely from titanium. The nose landing gear is the largest piece of solid titanium in existence. At top speed (just over mach 3) the fuselage grows an extra 9 inches in length. Special tooling had to be made to work on this material as normal tools would not only not be tough enough but would also corrode titanium. Standing on the ground the aircraft leaked fuel because none of the panels fitted until at high speed temperatures
    Hope this helps

      Interesting about the nose landing gear; the leaky fuel is a signature of the SR-71. Good thing the ignition temperature was very high!

    If you followed the build of the Morrvair, you'll notice that the vehicle has a full reinforced custom built frame from heavy wall rectangular tubing

      The role bars are likely welded to the custom built frame. They might stay straight while the unibody torques around when rock crawling.

    • @willyoung4512
      @willyoung4512 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The body doesn't carry any stress while rock crawling or otherwise.... That's the entire point of the frame and cage.

    • @randalmartin438
      @randalmartin438 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I want I watch all the build and I agree with all three of these answers if you watch the build they reinforce an entire frame under the unibody and the cage is loaded to the frame under the human body this suspension is built off of the frame in the cage so the body is not working separate of the frame and the cage the body will crumple around the cage that you don't see no dents around the glass more than likely a rock got spit from somebody else's tire then hit the windows

    I have a friend who actually lives in Hurricane currently, who when the first Blackbird was being built he worked for a machining company that knew how to machine titanium. They would receive under guard each day large blocks of the metal and blueprints of what they were supposed to machine the metal to. At the end of each day, the finished or unfinished parts, ALL metal shavings, everything was picked up, under the watchful eyes of the guards. The finished project was never explained to them, however since they machined aircraft parts for other companies they were able to figure out that it was airplane oriented. It wasn't until the plane was finally declassified that he figured out that he had helped machine and build probably the A12 which was built before the SR71. He is in his late 80's and still machines things for a dealership of UTV"s, ATV's. Honored to call him my friend. I had another friend who was an electrical engineer who had a data logger that he built up for NASA's SR71 since military aircraft don't have black boxes they like to know what is happening during tests and normal performance. Most of what he was doing was classified and he couldn't tell me what he did.
    He built a similar system for Bell-Boeing when they were testing the V22 Normally when they used his data logger they would land the plane bring out a wheeled test platform of various equipment hook the plane up while it was still running as they do have RAM data but once it was shut down it lost the data. On the V22 the cargo platform was big enough that they strapped it in and kept it in the aircraft. So when they had the fatal crash in the Gulf of Mexico they were able to recover it and determine that a part failed and what led up to the crash. Sadly that friend has since died.
    Not sure if any of that helps but even when my second friend was working on the plane much of what it was about was still classified.

      @@eventdrivenlife9427 Well, I married a Gardner. With no familial tie in over 8 Generations. Her relatives that were Gardner were from Scotland, mine from England. I have Scottish ancestry just not Gardner. There were 3 Gardner families that were pioneers of the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The First and most prominent was Archibald Gardner who was from Scotland then Canada. If you have ever been to Salt Lake City there is a place called Gardner Village that was where he had a Mill to grind wheat into flower. He was also a polygamist with 14 wives, when the Federal government started getting tough on polygamists' he moved his families to Spanish Fork Utah and lived there until they started putting polygamists' in jail. He then took his 2 youngest wives, left his 1st wife in charge of the remainder of his family and moved to Star Valley Wyoming as they didn't care and he lived there I believe until he died. Rulon Gardner the Olympic gold medalist in Greco roman wrestling came from. I don't know any other of his family who moved where. Most all of this information came from his relatives asking me stories if I was related to him. My ancestry were boatmen in England. Around the time they moved it was the same time that "boatmen" were disbanded or getting ready to. His father and family except his oldest brother came by boat in 1853 then wagon train to Salt lake city. In 1856 he and his wife and 4 children the youngest less than a year old came across the plains by handcart the 4th or Willie company which was trapped on the plains of Wyoming. They were rescued by two of his brothers in the rescue party who didn't recognize them due to the loss of weight. Surprisingly everyone survived even the youngest who was my Great Grandfather. He turned 1 as they were crossing the plains. My wife's family also crossed the plains on handcarts in the second handcart company. Her ancestor was a widow whos husband came the year earlier but disappeared never to be heard from only to know he did make it to the US. They settled in Salt lake city and Price Ut. My ancestors moved to South Eastern Idaho near Rexburg. So it would be possible that we might be related but we would need to know relatives. If you wanted to instant message me on facebook we could talk more. Same name and I live in Utah although I grew up in Washington state.

    Either install new glass on flexible foam which can float as body adjusts and/or use Lexan glass.

    Judging from the photographs of the window. I would probably look at straight above where that initial crack or break is for a dimple in the metal that has worked his way through the rubber gasket that made contact with the glass it will rub for a certain period of time and then the glass will break that being said I learned of this knowledge by hauling glass. the very smallest tip of a nail would in fact breaking entire crate of glass. it rubbed one plate that one would break causing the rest to break. I quit hauling glass for this very reason. ......just saying....

  • @wescox2769

    probably a flaw where the glass fits into the frame. I broke a windshield while installing it. There was a small piece of the old windshield stuck onto the frame it caused a stress point and subsequent identical breakage

  • @g0fvt

    Chances are that there is a high spot behind the rubber seal, the vehicle is not really a unibody any more. If you look back at the build videos it has a massive frame.

      @@eventdrivenlife9427 i myself would wrap the edge of the glass with 3m 1/4" foam tape and adjust the size of the glass and or the frame pocket the window sets in and line the pocket with the same tape install the glass with just enough pressure to hold it still under normal bumps in the path as you begin to flex the car you should have 3/8" movement between glass and frame .

  • @CarswithNash
    @CarswithNash 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I just don’t see it being a flex issue, Glass is highly flexible in any case, you can bend a window like that about 3 inches end to end without breaking it. That is far from a stock Corvair they reinforced every inch of it, it’s very well built.

    Hi dude . Is there anyone that could do a software program on the body , frame ang glass panel flexing -torqueing And shear of the vehicle drop shock .
    I am thinking there may be a rigidity point frame-body/roll-cage that might could cause that stress-tear in the glass .

      Might the body design be over taxed in how the Movair is used , I am seeing that possible window stantion posts added at the break points would allow for cushioning of the impact of extrema 4X4 and kinetic energy of pulling . At this time it might be good to have Robby Layton check for metal buckling or stretching near those areas . After all the body and frame are 1960's station wagon not engineered for the current powerhouse

    -- Pretty sure Matt is running a full Chevy truck frame from perhaps 2000 to 2006. Probably built up a good bit as well. Speculating on that, but that would be my guess.
    As for the windows. Body flex could do that. After all it's sitting on dampeners, so it could twist freely.
    Fun one for the SR-71 th-cam.com/video/Lg73GKm7GgI/w-d-xo.html

    • @CarswithNash
      @CarswithNash 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It doesn’t have a frame, it is a unibody but highly reinforced, I really don’t think twisting is the cause of the breakage but who knows.

    • @randalmartin438
      @randalmartin438 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But I remember seeing that in the corvair that's where the engine sat and you built a whole frame in the whole back end where the engine you set that's where your tank is and you build a whole frame for the rear suspension and that's where your roll bars are tied in and it's tied up clear into the back seats which size in the whole back quarter of the of the corvair so that ties a whole back half of the corvair as one unit I don't think the back back third of the core rear if it did you'd see it in the rear deck lid

    Laminated glass doesn't like twisting but this was broken by an impact with something. The glass could be replaced with tempered glass and a piece of foam robber placed on the roll cage tube. The roll cage looks like it is an inch or more away from the glass and the Morrvair shouldn't have flexed that much and there isn't any paint damage on the roll cage. What does the other side look like?

    • @eventdrivenlife9427
      @eventdrivenlife9427  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question; the other side is broken on the driver side middle window. Ergo, where the passenger in the back seat sits. It's just a clean break with no impact zone.
