  • One year ago Ed Smart's wife, Lois, looked him in the eye and asked him something that had been tormenting her. "December 10th, my wife asked me ‘are you gay?’ And I finally said yes,” he told Inside Edition. The Smart family became nationally prominent during the kidnapping and miraculous rescue of their daughter, Elizabeth, in 2002. Now, Ed Smart is speaking out about his struggle to come out to his wife of 34 years and come to terms with his sexual orientation. #InsideEdition

    It's quite a heartbreaking situation for both the dad, that he had to live with this secret from 12 to 64, and for the mom that she just found out she's been married with a gay man for 34 years. So much judgement in the comments! Wow. The times were very different, and the guy grew up Mormon. You can't expect him to just either stay a single Mormon for his whole life or leave his faith and family to date guys in a time when being gay was a lot less accepted. Have some empathy for the difficult situation he was in, and simply fight for LGBT acceptence now, so fewer people in the future will feel the need to lie about whom they're attracted to. Also, just because he was gay, doesn't make the whole 34 years meaningless and a waste of time. It's not that black & white.

    • @mrsTraveller64
      @mrsTraveller64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He SHOULD have stayed single, he should have told everyone(who asked)" I am not getting married because I can't commit myself to a person,it scares me, maybe later in life", AND he could have said he wants to move abroad and find someone there! He could have done that, noone would have known WHAT he did in Europe for example! He could have sent pictures of some woman if he felt he had to, and pretend he met someone, and a year later "oh, it didn't work out, now I'm gonna concentrate on work". I mean he obviously is good at lying so! Must be horrible to belong to a religion where the elders decide how your future should be, not yourself. I live as a single with kids because I don't want to share my home and my kids and my holidays and my LIFE with a man and years later be dumped by him or whatever. To me my single life has been a blessing, would live my next life as single too! Marriage is mostly ending in divorce anyway, I love myself more than to put myself through that. Here in Europe anyone can stay single for whatever reason!

    Don’t blame this guy for lying to his wife, blame society who made it socially unacceptable to be gay. Society said it was bad to be gay and he felt he had to marry a woman, so he did. It’s obvious they still love each other and she holds no ill will towards him, and his kids too. It’s only now because of the LGTBQ movement that it’s now acceptable in society. In fact people treat you like a hero which is going a bit far, I just think it should be ok to love whoever you want. It must feel good for him to be who he is and not living a lie because that’s what is socially acceptable.

His wife has to have known it, yet she chose to ignore it (as did he) because of fairly obvious reasons…church and religion, public image, their children… People live lives of quiet desperation in exchange for something they believe has more importance to them. Eventually though, something usually has to give!

Coming out is still fresh, and he is in the middle of processing all the things in an environment (Utah/Mormon culture) that is very unfriendly toward gay people, and can't really look back on it yet. It will be far more interesting to see how he feels about the two comparatively in 5-10 years.

    My soon to be ex daughter-in-law left my son April 2021. She told him she never loved him. They have 3 kids. She now wants everything that he had built in his life. A wedding venue that he spent 4 year's building and 3 mos after he finished it...she wanted out. He asked why, and she said...."I can now support myself". It appears from all the gossip in their small TN town that she left for a transgender. This person was born a woman but identifies as a man 👨 She was always very quiet and appeared to be shy. I believe her problem was hiding the fact that she was gay. Her older 2 kids no longer respect her. Their mother has told so many lies to the Judge. The transgender had my son locked up for stalking her. My son had never been to jail and is an upstanding citizen and a wonderful Father. The transgender and soon-to-be ex filed a false police report. He sat in jail for 18 hrs and was never told during that time why he was locked up. The charge was thrown out of court. He had a receipt that showed he was at a restaurant at the time they said he was in the transgenders parking lot. Gay or straight....go live your life but don't try to destroy a good man in the process. For people who want to live a lie about their sexuality is destroying the innocent person. I am sure Lois saw all the signs. I followed their story back then and I felt like Ed was gay.

      Plenty of straight people screw over their exes too, do you demonize women and men too? Quit using this as an excuse to whine about trans people.

    I thought it was fairly obvious Ed Smart was more than likely gay from the first two weeks of media after Elizabeth was abducted. Many gaydars activated. I wasn't surprised at all when he announced that he's gay.
    My reaction was: "Ah, who DIDN'T KNOW/COULDN'T TELL?"
    Unfortunately for her, apparently Lois. I feel for her the most.
