Forced Landing - Grumman Style

  • A look at what happens to a plane and the pilot during a forced landing. The crash was near the fuel farm and that day the Fire Department was checking so they were on hand as well as a line boy what was an EMT. While Mike the EMT calmed me the firemen call for the Air Care chopper at our field and they came and got me and flew me to UC's ICU. The nurse on the chopper would earn the Florence Nightingale award (not for my case) and there was an MD on board as well. These people earned my thanks that day. This fast response if what I believe allowed me to stay on the side of the living. I was touch and go in the ICU for several weeks before I turned the corner and could go to a Long Term facility. Video 665 in the Hit Parade.

God bless you sir. I am glad you survived this accident and pray for your full healing and return of all mobility. There is a reason you survived. Considering the crash dynamics it speaks to the fact you are one strong and tough man. You made a quick assessment of your options considering the outcome to avoid possible tragedy to others on the ground. Respects to you and your loved ones. Also my respects to the very competent first responders. 👍🇺🇸

Wishing you the best from down under, I am a T12 survivor myself, burst fracture back in 1992. You are much stronger now then I was at the same stage, I was a mess, I thought my life was over, but it wasn't, I fathered two beautiful children who are now 19 and 22, I am a watchmaker by trade and doing very well for myself. I truly wish you the speediest of recoveries, and truly hope you regain all of your limbs. I never recovered, my injuries were severe to say the least, but once your swelling goes down, you could be amazed at what returns.

It took about a year to get fully recovered. I pray you get better just remember the mind is powerful so keep positive thoughts.

As the father of a General Aviation pilot (who coincidentally I spoke to earlier this evening about taking me up again), it’s these incidents that always concern me whenever he pilots a single engine plane, and when he’s working his regular job as a flight attendant I worry about bird strikes and a Cactus 1549 scenario. The bravery of pilots never ceases to amaze me.
I’m grateful as a dad of a pilot that you’re here with us and able to communicate to us the circumstances involving your accident and to offer your encouragement which is beyond special and much appreciated. Continued strength and recovery. Thank goodness for you Sir. I’ll share this video with my son.

Well there's plenty other ways for anyone to end up like this, especially in/ motor vehicles. Any sort of sports can have you end up this way too. My dad's chiropractor was out jogging and was run over by a drunk driver and now he's a paraplegic. People slip and fall in their homes, walking at work, or out on vacation all the time. There's risk in everything we do. In the end do what you love, mitigate danger the best you can, and don't let fear rule your life.

So sorry to learn of your accident but glad you survived what was clearly a horrendous impact!
I owned and flew an AA1A 1972 model between 1977 - 1992 and clocked up about 2000 hrs on that aircraft into which I also installed a Lyc 0-320 which made it a great performer especially where I fly at Johannesburg South Africa which is 5500' AMSL.
I used to be a member of the AYA when Bill Marvel was President and Stu Wilson Treasurer and visited with them in California in 1989, flying across country in Grumman Tigers to Cable, Wisconsin for the AYA Convention. Had a great time with a great bunch of flying folks!
A friend with a standard AA1B had a similar take-off accident where his fully-laden aircraft stalled out on climb out as a result of high density altitude - it never really got flying and finally stalled in from about 80 feet. The damage was similar but less to his aircraft and we all reckoned that the thing that saved him and his fiancee, the passenger, was the honeycomb sandwich construction of the cockpit, which remained undistorted.
His injury was smashed teeth as he was thrown forward into the control yoke and his fiancee broke her collarbone since she had her shoulder strap tight! They were lucky to have been in a Grumman, any other common light aircraft would have folded up around them and caused worse injuries. The aircraft was totalled.
Best of luck with your full recovery, as you say, there is hard work to do.

Excellent message for all of us aviators who dare tempt fate and pray that what you went through I do not have to experience. Face with the options that you had, you possibly did the only thing you could do, and remarkably, survived, that was a hell of crash landing. God must have been with you and perhaps he is now using you to tell your story so we can be mindful of the consequences a maintain aircrafts properly, and more to the point, for us to keep practicing engine failures and emergency landings as regularly as we can afford to.
Great message, thank you very much for the video, Good luck with your recovery, keep doing all you can and you will get better day by day.

    Franklin

It had also been run by the overhaul facility and the results sent along. All new lifetime hoses on the oil/fuel as well. All tested for flow rates (electric, mechanical and both) as part of checking the engine prior to flight. Full power ground runs and checking both fuel tanks (as well as aux pumps from the reserve tanks).

It will be interesting to find out, but me too. The prop doesn't look like it was at speed if you consider that the attitude of the impact would likely have caused the prop to strike fairly early in the crash. The pilot's description implies some control during the event.
Thanks to the pilot for making this video.

Highest of admiration to you for your will to survive and the courage you exude by sharing your experience with others.
As an aside, for the last 12 years I have hunted ducks with the same hunting buddy, using only 1 boat, his boat, a 14ft Grumman. We are both portly fellers. Our fatassness, combined with the precarious situations and downright destructive irreverence shown that boat should have seen her peal apart at every pop-riveted seam during that first hunting season, but alas......she remains seaworthy after 12.
In this crash, with the force of impact being claimed to be ~24g’s, I was surprised the aircraft wasn’t in thousands of tiny pieces.
Then the pilot says “it’s a Grumman.” Now, I’m not so surprised.
Apparently, anything Grumman-built is almost as tough as the pilot seen in this video. Thanks for sharing.

Thank-you for the insight of a forced landing at low altitude. What most don't realize is the very short time there is from engine out to hit the ground. I had a 8 g forced landing but was able to repair the aircraft. Bursed L1 no nerve damage.

I had a tumor in my lower spine. After surgery I could not feel from the waist down. Took 40 months for most of the nerves to regrow. Some in the left leg never did. What I wanted to share is I developed very bad spinal pain. I had a Spinal Cord Stimulator implanted, HF10. My hope is this summer to be able to get in the left seat again.
Healing of the spine is slow process. PT helps but lots of go arounds. Best to your recovery.

Healing takes time, be patient and persistent with it. Before you complimented the Grumman, I already felt the same. I thought your first mention of the G Forces was an incorrect decimal point but then you repeated it later. My Toyota MR2 kept me alive after a high speed Cadillac pushed me hard into a Jeep Cherokee when both of us were stopped at a light. Concussive Brain Injury. I found the right treatment for that and it took time but I am well. You do the same.

Careful with those carburetors. They are temperamental and require troubleshooting. Seems that you had carb problems or oil burning cylinder. I taught initial climb emergencies troubleshooting via mixture, carb heat and throttle adjustments (While on initial climb). One trick i developed around 1993 was to check the mixture on the ground at full power-using the mixture control. Full power, engine not hot, but normal temp for take off. Pull mixture back slowly until eng, start cutting. Notice the cutting point. BAck to rich. If cut too far back, the mixture is too rich. If cutting too soon, the mixture is too lean. It should not cut in the extremes.
Im the CFI that also created the safe methods to teach EFATO on initial climb Turnbacks and started the name change from the impossible turn. I did that with my 1995 video i posted in 2010 in you tube. I taught all my EFATO methods to that poster outwiththem in 1996. He posted some of them before on Grumman Pilots channels. Stay strong.. Jay Vega.. Aerobatics, EFATO and Bush Pilot CFI retired-due covid..

Did many ground runs to verify carb, D&G have always given me great work that I very rarely have to adjust on a plane. Usually a sign of other issues (exhaust, intake, etc).

@@GrummanPilots Try that Mixture Test. Do it also with some carb heat. You learn if those cylinders are getting good or marginal mixture content.

Did you figure out what happened with the engine stopping? You mentioned the carb was overhauled. Did you check that out? I was a passenger in LongEZ crash in 1992. They found the carb float was set at its minimum (within spec) and believe that may have contributed to the engine stop. The NTSB actually started and ran the O200 engine after the fact. They were not able to find any issues with the engine. In the end, they blamed the pilot for mismanaging the controls. I own a Tiger and since that crash, I fly and wear a parachute. The Tiger should be relatively easy to jump from, provided you have enough altitude. I think more people would consider flying with a parachute when they weigh a broken leg against death. I spent 10 months at home recovering from my injuries. The pilot did not survive.

Greetings... have a lot of hours in the AA1B...great little bird....and I am glad you were flying that... a Cessna likely would not have taken the punishment. Sorry that you are so dinged up but glad that you were not killed....yes, a lot of rehab ahead of you but you have the resolve and attitude to tough it out. I know you made a lot of choices in a few seconds and did some excellent flying to get to the grass. Best wishes in your recovery. Terry
