Back in the 90s, there was a homeless man busking in front of a Walgreens where I would buy my beer. He started playing Wish You Were Here (very well, I should add) and despite my limited vocal talent, I decided to sing along as he played guitar. All of a sudden, a small crowd gathered and began dropping coins and dollar bills into his guitar case. Over ten minutes or so, he had close to $80 and offered to share it with me as he had only collected about $4 prior to me showing up. I refused but he insisted that he would at least buy my beer. This became a regular thing for about two weeks until he disappeared. Hopefully, he had gotten enough money to buy the train ticket he needed to go back home…🖖🏼

After he left, they told him that it was Syd Barrett. Nobody recognized him, and they were baffled by how he knew that they would be recording a song about him on that day.

Mid-winter talent show, June 1986, McMurdo Station Antarctica.
One of the Kiwi's sat on a stool with his guitar and started playing this song. That moment, the entire Galley fell silent. Not a word was said, not a sound besides this mans playing and singing was made.
We had been away from our loved ones since at least October, me, it was August. We had been totally isolated from the rest of the world since the beginning of March as the sun set and support flights from New Zealand had ended. We missed our loved ones. We missed seeing people other than the 100 of us that were left behind to ensure the base was still there when people would again start coming back.
Every time I hear this song, I remember just how I felt at that moment, when we all listened and wished our loves were there.

Waters declared the band finished, and because he was doing all the composing.
When Dave made the stand to keep going, even with renewed intent, new tunes ...and playing all the old material because they were three fourth owners of those!
Waters became embittered by the fact that he'd worked to keep the band going, then when they didn't do much he left it - and only then did they take interest.
You can see why he was pissed off really, but also why they decided it wasn't over and done just because Roger said it was.

@@mahatmacote6478 While I knew Led Zeppelin well by 13 thanks to a neighbor kid, I only discovered Pink Floyd at 16, from an unmarked tape I brought with me to math camp (yes, math camp, Hampshire College) that I'd taken out of my mom's car, only had one side of an album on it, but I decided after a couple listens, this must be Pink Floyd! And it was, the 2nd side of Momentary Lapse of Reason. So while yes my deepest love of Floyd comes from the collaborative stull of the late 60's to mid 70s, my initial love was inspired from a Floyd without Waters, so I've never resented him leaving. As much as I respect and love The Wall and Final Cut, clearly something had been lost by that time. My guess is that Waters had become an intolerable bully and the other members preferred to interact with him as little as possible. And sorry to bring politics into it, but his recent endorsement of Russia's invasion of the Ukraine solidifies my conclusion that sadly he made his own Barrett-esque escape from reality despite his efforts to not withdraw.

    • @lapelcelery42
      @lapelcelery42 ปีที่แล้ว +15

@@mahatmacote6478 There's a little more to that. Waters kept bringing material to the others (Wright was gone by this point), and Gilmour kept knocking it back because he didn't like it (seems like Mason was reasonably passive in this period). Which pissed off Waters because Gilmour wasn't bringing anything himself after the Wall, on which he contributed a few riffs which the band made into songs together (the guitar parts to Young Lust and Run Like Hell, and the chorus chords and melody to Comfortably Numb). As you said, Waters told Gilmour and Mason that because they weren't contributing and they were just complaining about everything he brought that he wasn't going to write anything else for the band, and Gilmour and Mason threatened to join with the record company to sue him for withholding product. Waters was forced to leave the band because he couldn't afford to take on those three parties, so he sued to dissolve the partnership. Eventually his lawyers advised him that the band was too profitable for dissolution, and that he could either drop the suit or sue to keep the name himself, which he had a far better case for than the others because he was the primary singer, songwriter and composer at that time, as he had been for at least the last three albums. He dropped the suit because he didn't think it was right for either party to keep the name without the other. So I think history has been rather unfair on Waters both with regard to the musical input he had in the band, and with the idea that he sued the others over the name, which actually didn't happen - they were the one's who wanted to make it a legal battle.

@@michaelpatton7065 what I don’t think Pink Floyd gets enough credit for is their simplicity, from a lyrical and musical standpoint. They mastered what all great artists have mastered and that’s efficiency.
If you go to an art gallery featuring well known masters, (one where you can walk right up on the paintings), you’ll come to realize that these seemingly complex, realistic portions of the painting when standing 10’ away, are really a single brush stroke when you get up close. It’s not this overly labored, polished thing. It gets the job done as simply as possible (and that’s an incredibly difficult thing to master).
Pink Floyd’s lyrics convey in a single line what other lyricists will take an entire song to try and capture. And Gilmour’s most iconic solos and riffs are something even a beginning guitar player can manage to play in an afternoon (or less) of effort. He doesn’t need crazy speed runs and 100 notes to get his point across (The solo from Comfortably Numb is a perfect example of this).
Their greatest trait as a band was their ability to condense all this emotion into the simplest formula possible.
“An idiot admires complexity, a genius admires simplicity.”

Pink Floyd is probably my favorite band, particularly since I first heard the entirety of The Wall for the first time when I was a teenager. Having undiagnosed ADHD and feeling like I was falling apart at the seems, It felt like The Wall was perfectly encapsulating my experience. I was isolating myself from my peers... they weren't doing it, I was. As a creative I also I felt a commonality with Syd and thought maybe I was going crazy. So take DSOTM, WYWH and The Wall and what those albums were about and it makes sense that it would hit hard for me as a form of therapy. I didn't get diagnosed until the age of 43... that's a long time to not understand what the hell is going on. I will forever be grateful for PF and those albums in particular for at least stabilizing my lost and wayward trajectory.

Pink Floyds best ever song is "Seamus" from the album "Meddle". Any band that would be brave enough to have a dog do back up vocals, and actually have it sound good, deserves recognition for it. It's also the song that turned me on to Blues music back in the day, so it's also consciousness expanding. I didn't discover Pink Floyd until The Wall in '79 and immediately started buying their earlier albums. At first I was more drawn to that period from Dark Side onwards, but as I grew older I started to develop a fondness for that one from the departure of Syd Barrett when they were trying to find their own identity as a band. The albums are very rough and lack the polish of those later albums but there are so many gems to be found that never got the attention they deserved--even by the band. As uneven as these albums are they have a charm and sense of whimsy that the later albums lack. Once the band became a tool to air out the hang ups and neurosis of Roger Waters the rest were just along for the ride.

Roger’s recording engineer Nick Griffiths ( He arranged the school kids for The Wall)
Was a good friend of mine.He sadly died March 2005. His funeral service was held at an old church in Old Heathfield Sussex.
Roger was very fond of Nick. He had assisted Roger on his solo albums Pros And Cons, Radio Chaos, Amused To Death, The Wall (Berlin) up to In The Flesh Live.
Roger attended the funeral service where he performed “Wish You Were Here” He adapted a few of the lyrics. It was incredibly moving. Especially for Nicks widow Joey.

Which The Wall tracks are unlistenable? You have to understand The Wall is a rock opera, which is a different genre to their previous albums. You can't listen to it with the mindset of Dark Side, WYWH or Animals. As a rock opera, it's a great album. Not perfect, but far from unlistenable.

"Rock's most progressive band?" I'd say King Crimson deserves that title.

Right? Pink Floyd, as great as they were, were hardly the archetypal prog rock band so many say they were.

Mid 70's college student here. I gotta give a big thumbs up to anybody wearing a Rat Fink tee-shirt.
Seriously, this was a well told story, I had Wish You Were Here and a roommate had Animals. I'm gonna classify myself as post Syd. What a time to experience music.

*"Wish You Were Here"* from Pink Floyd a simple country song.
    Really??
    Hogwash.
Any rock song can be turned into a country song. Like Kashmir from Led Zeppelin to Smoke on the Water from Deep Purple to Night Songs from Cinderella.
    Want proof,,,,,,,,,,
A Finland band called Steve 'N Seagulls turned AC/DC's *"Thunderstruck"* & Gund 'N Roses *"November Rain"* into Bluegrass songs. There on TH-cam & their excellent.
Most, not all but most songs are written on an acoustic guitar or a piano (not the electric keyboard). A musician then can write anytime & anywhere without electricity.
Besides. Roger Waters is a nutcase. Waters needed Gilmore, Wright & Manson more than Gilmore, Wright, Mason needed Waters.
Sad thing is *ALL OF THEM NEEDED EACH OTHER.* And that didn't happen.

This is my favorite album, the GOAT, at least imho. I vividly remember getting the album and placing it on my turntable. I was 25, and the album had an impact on me that lives with me today. What a pleasure it was to hear the history of it. Again, many thanks, Professor!
