My wife and I toured Belfast in 2018, and our guide, who came up as a local IRA fighter, forever changed the way I feel about the song. He had us listen to it after asking us to put ourselves into the scene of the time it came out. He told us what a mindset change it was, to know that *he* was one of the zombies she sings about. He said he had to ask himself what *was* in his head. And she was right, that it was a mindset of war and hatred and retribution--always wanting to "strike back" for wrongs. But then realizing that both sides had been wronged. He had a young daughter at the time, and he had to look at her and decide if he wanted her to become a zombie to war, too. He decided he didn't.
Our guide absolutely says this song trigger the biggest and most important shift in his thinking. And for many others he knows. He absolutely credits Dolores and the band for initiating the change that led to the peace accords. I'll never hear the song again without thinking of him and that city, slowly experiencing rebirth because of a song.

I was born and raised in 1980s Belfast. I literally cannot describe how much this song means, what it feels like to listen to, the emotional depth of it. It's not an exaggerationto say this song contributed to the sentiment that led to the Good FridayAgreement. I remember the outrage and sorrow after this bombing. Our despair boiled over. Thank you for being our voice, Dolores. Miss you.

Professor, I used to manage a Camelot Music store in Lagrange, Georgia. I had a chance to go to a store in Atlanta, and meet and greet the Cranberries while they were in town. I took my 10-year-old daughter because she was a big fan. When we got there, they were starting to pack up and they were done greeting people. But, when Dolores saw my little girl, she smiled and motioned her over and talk to her for the longest time. It was a very special day for both of us. Delores was great.

Kudos to you once again, Professor! Not just for yet ‘another’ great video. THIS one clearly ranks among your best.
As a boomer who grew up during the Vietnam era, I remember the powerful anti-war songs that became anthems for protests that eventually helped to end it.
While I completely agree with you, that Zombie had more of an impact on ending that conflict than people give it credit for, I have a different take on one particular verse.
From the moment I first heard Zombie, I took Delores’ following words, not as much as about her own feelings (she made them clear frequently), but more to about how people in general tended to distance themselves from the violence because it doesn’t affect them or THEIR family directly.
I hear it as; “But you see, it’s not me. It’s not MY family, in your head. In your head, THEY are fighting.”
    Rest in peace, Delores. 🙏🏼 ☮️ 🕊️

They sang MOSTLY Cranberries songs, and ZOMBIE was the first song they learned, and performed together. MERGE was a big hit with friends, and the local community for several years. I first remember hearing "Zombie" in the spring of 1996 in my art class. Our teacher occasionally tuned the classroom radio in to the local alternative rock channel. When the Cranberries came on the air, he took issue with Dolores' vocal inflections. I was personally enjoying it, even though alternative rock was never my thing. That June, when my first band, Different Directions, played a gig in Monticello, NY, the band who followed us up, Stonehenge, covered "Zombie" with their guitarist and lead singer singing the melody an octave below Dolores' range. Little did I know that I would be a member of Stonehenge myself 6 years later, playing a lot of the same songs that they had in their 90s repertoire, including this one.

I’ve never heard of the Cranberries or the song Zombie. One day my 6 year old grandson came over. We are sitting in lawn chairs in the shade in my back yard. Cooper starts singing Zombie, he knew all the words. That song got stuck inside my head. Yep, in your head, in your head. I had to look it up and download it. I became a big Cranberries fan.

Dolores O’Riodan’s voice was, to me, completely mesmerizing! Her Irish brogue had this yodel-like quality that just drew you in mind and spirit. I truly fell in love with her voice and deeply mourned her untimely passing. While I honor her musical/vocal legacy, I just yearn for what could have been added to her legacy had darkness not fallen upon her brilliant bright light.

I first heard Zombie on the radio on the overnight shift when I worked in a steel factory. Was probably in 1996 or so. I had never heard of the Cranberries before. I loved the song itself. The music itself sounded so right. But the voice blew me away. I instantly thought I was in love and that I was going to marry that woman someday even though I was already married. I asked my wife when I got home from work if she had ever heard the song before. I didn’t know the bands name, just some of the lyrics. She instantly said it was The Cranberries. So over the weekend I went and bought their first two CDs. And after seeing what she looked like I was even more in love. Saw them in concert twice. Once with Flickerstick and once with Collective Soul. They were phenomenal both times. My heart sunk when I got the notification on my cell phone when she died. Sitting in my office I went numb. I actually cried on the hour long ride home from work. We had lost the voice of an angel.

I was on my second deployment to Bosnia. Spent a total of 1 year, in and around country, across two, 6 month deployments. While in Sarajevo, we had a dayroom of sorts, that in the evenings, we would gather and play darts, foosball, and despite being deployed, drink a few beers. This song had recently come out, and one of the frequent patrons (Dutch Soldier, if memory serves) would play this song on repeat, night after night. Occasionally someone else would get a song in the mix, but this song, was always played multiple times. No real complaints that I remember. A testament to how good the song really is. 🍻

But last year I was able to go visit and it is a beautiful country and the people we met were so kind. War makes people do terrible things to other humans. But as I sit here watching this I am drinking tea from my souvenir cup from my trip to Northern Ireland I am reminded how important artists are in society and that war can go away.
