The Canary name
The name Canaria has an uncertain origin in the history of the Canary Islands. There are several theories about this, at least four, so whether it comes from dogs, seals, a people group that the Romans deported or from the Ganar people on the African side of the islands, is not known. In any case, the Romans had their names: They called El Hierro - Pulvalia or Ombrion, La Gomera - Capraria, La Palma - Junonia, Tenerife - Ninguaria/Nivaria and Gran Canaria Canaria - Planasia. The collective term for these islands was "The happy islands", and it fits well today. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote went under the common name Purpurøyene.
Arnobius from Sicca (Tunisia) was the first to refer to the archipelago as the Canary Islands, or rather he said Insulas Canarias in Latin, already around the year 300. Today's name for the islands comes from when the Europeans rediscovered the islands in the 14th century. Often the name has a local origin, or as for example Lanzarote which is named after Lancelotto Malocello, who arrived there around 1312.
Absolutely fascinating!!
Watching this on a wet and dreary December day. Great weather, great roads, a couple of mates on great bikes, a great soundtrack and the wonderful Spanish cafe culture. What’s not to like? Merry Christmas to you and Monika.
It was a glorious day for all of these reasons, Andy🙂🤘🏼🏍🏍🏍 Have a fantastic Christmas!
@@FreddieDobbs 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
That Bobber oh my, what a stunner
Freddie thank you for the surprise birthday wish! My wife showed me the video you took while introducing the Motorcycle Accommodations in Tenerife, thank you so much sir!
Absolutely my pleasure, Philip! Happy birthday to you and hopefully our paths will cross one day🙂🤜🏼🤛🏼
Truly three beauties that make the heart beat faster, these motorcycles.
great video freddie - and great music too!!!
Great video! Thanks for a great record of our ride out!
Love restaurant papillon ,great place to soak up the views..
If there is a heaven you have found it, amazing ❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧🏍 merry Christmas.
This vid makes me just want to get up and go for a ride. 6 degrees and pissing it down so I'll leave it for today, great vid Freddie
i am so envious of the weather...having a winter storm here..lol..."the other island"..lol..in NE Ohio your dodging potholes...another great video...
Delighted you enjoyed the video!🙂I heard in Florida was -2 Celsius!😳 Sending all my best🇺🇸
What a beautiful ride, and Freddie great skills with the Insta360. Monica will be proud.👍
Thank you so much!📹
Just returned from cruising the Canaries and Madeira, beautiful blue sky over every island visited with the exception of Madeira as it rained lightly both visits, 27 degrees C on Gran Canaria, now back home and the forecast is rain for at least the next ten days here in South Wales, role on spring when I can wake the Honda from hibernation.
Visited Tenerife over four days and kept an eye out for you on our trips out, many Triumphs about but but sadly not yours. Rise safe.
Awesome video and awesome content Thanks Freddie and Monika
Brilliant tour of Tenerife. love the music as-well 👍🏻
Another great video, thanks Freddie. New camera system is cool and I always enjoy your music selection
Watching you traveling...with a very Unique Taste as usual...makes me very happy..it like talking us with you...as that much you delivered the feelings...thank you very much Freddie...what a fantastic day to hit the road 🤙🏻🥇🎉
Thank you for your videos. Merry Christmas from Norway. 🙂
Oh my, seems like a dream for a weekend getaway! Quality content as always Freddie!
It’s a really unforgettable day’s riding👌🏻 Thank you sir🙂
It's the perfect weekend getaway, was there a month a go and will definitely go back!
Beautiful scenery
What a stunning video! Really hoping to get a Speed Twin 900 as my next bike 🙏
Delighted you enjoyed the video, Brandon. The Speed Twin 900 is genuinely a dream to ride- you will love it🙂🏍🖤
Your descriptions of what you see, hear and feel is fresh and brings back to younger time and how I saw the world. Your videos unburden me for a brief time and allow me to see the world through your eyes. Thank you👏
That’s incredibly kind of you to say so, I’m delighted you enjoyed it🙂
Thanks Freddie...wow...what a day you had! Air like crystal. Man, those roads. It truly looks like biker heaven to me. I smile every time I see you (and Monika of course!!!) pop up. Love you guys. Take care and ride safe both of you.
Hi , yes were all on Dog Islands, when you pull another one out of the Dobbs Christmas cracker , enjoy have fun , al the best Freddie and Monika and see you on the next one .😉👍
Superb Freddie and Monika. We're hoping to confirm our booking in the next day or so. Thank you!
I've been working in the elements overnight in -7.77c with snow on the ground in the suburbs of Seattle. To make myself feel warmer listening to vlogs of all the tragic climbs of Everest, K2, Denali etc. Freddy Dobbs to the rescue with some beautiful sunny scenery. Just like James Bond going from the alps to the Riviera 😁.
I’ve been following this US weather event- it’s a scary thing!😳 Glad I could bring a bit of Tenerife warmth to your screen☀️
All my best🙂🇺🇸
Wow
In all the years living there as a kid, I can honestly say I have only seen it that clear a hand full of times.
Normally El Hiero and La Palma are obscured or very merky with haze.
That is crystal
So glad you are back there Freddie. Hope you both have an amazing time
We were so lucky- everything was crystal clear and so warm! It felt amazing to be back!🙂❤️🏝🏴
Happy Christmas Freddie and Monica I need some of that winter sun whilst riding a classic.
Another cracking video with beautiful views and an awesome retro cafe, thanks Freddie. You should get your self down to Wales during the summer time 🏴
Next year Chris- I MUST get over to Wales🙂🏴
Looks like a great trip. Can really see myself getting a day away from the family the next time I'm in Tenerife and doing a day with Tenerife on Triumph. Their Black T120 would be my dream bike.
Myself and Mrs SteveW have been looking at potential places for our 2024 holiday (2023 already booked) and I've never been to Tenerife. She has and said it's lovely.
I think if we do go, I'm going to have to try and book a tour with Adam now. I've never ridden a bike abroad before, so it would be a good experience I think. Lisa (Mrs SteveW) doesn't ride, but like Monika she does enjoy going pillion, so I think it would be a great addition to a holiday in the sun!
You’ll both love it, Steve! Lisa will love it as much as you as there’s something for everyone- it’s a breath taking island!
A most enjoyable watch.
What a wonderful way to live. Management is convinced, we will be going.
You have already laid the groundwork for our Barcelona trip in February.
Safe, happy travels 👍
Once management’s been convinced, there is no stopping you!🙂 You will both love Tenerife, and Barcelona too! Happy Christmas!
Great video as always, love the music on this too! Roads do have a USA vibe too, perfect winter biking getaway 👌🏼
Excellent video Freddie. Lovely bikes, lovely weather, lovely roads. And it's nearly Christmas!! What more do you want! 👍
Another great video. So tempted to book a riding tour to get some sunshine and a riding fix. Have a great Christmas 🎄
Thank you John, have a fantastic Christmas🙂🎅
I didn’t realise how much I’ve missed you😍great video.
Great to have you back and thank you!🙂
incredible view
Well done Freddie. Magnificent video. You show places like no one else.
Really appreciated, thanks Nark🙂
Greetings from down under. Have followed your adventures all year, waiting with much anticipation for your latest weekly releases. Loved every minute. Hope you and Monica have a wonderful Christmas and a ssfe and happy New Year. Thanks.
From both Monika and I, thank you Keith! I hugely appreciate the support. Have a brilliant Christmas!🙂🇦🇺👋
Fascinating indeed, we love dogs and own two Westies. I just needed to check this an in fact latin: Canariae Insulae means Dog Island. Thats amazing! Thanks Freddie, I never knew that.
With this camera it's like first person experience, I felt like cruising with you guys! Top quality. TH-cam of the future.
I’m glad you double checked Michal, because I have been know you get a few facts like this wrong in the past🙂 Delighted you enjoyed the video- these little cameras really are magic. Oh, and I love Westies!🐶
Tenerife: Land of the barking dog..
What a triumphant day ov filming 🎥 😍
Thank you Eddie (nicely done😆🏍👌🏻)
Fun ride as always, Merry Christmas to you and Monika, looking forward to more adventures in the New Year. 🥂
Wow Dobbsy you are a lucky man riding in that beautiful place on those roads with all the twists and turns and you shot the video perfectly thanks for the ride 🎄👍🏾🎅
It was a fantastic few days- I was very lucky!🙂 Have a great Christmas Ash!🎅
I prefer Dobber to Dobbsy
Got to love the island of tenerife so much to see and do with amazing views and the best roads for getting about. Been back a week but so looking forward to going back. Great video as always Freddie
I know the feeling Malcolm- it’s a place I think I’ll keep on returning to🙂
@@FreddieDobbs where are you off to next? We are off to gran canaria mid January
Hi Freddie Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family
Well Freddie this is sickening on one hand and absolutely brilliant on the other sickening because I can not be there and brilliant because it brings some sunshine and beautiful roads onto my computer screen 😉you lucky dog don't rush back it's horrible here 😆👍
Apologies for rubbing it in a bit😆☀️ I had missed it quite a lot!🏝🤘🏼🏍
The Rocket 3 R is the best-looking Triumph. At least in my eyes. Id like to see you ride one. I bet youd want one. I rode the original Rocket Roadster in 2010. The best bike I've been on.
Lovely island.
Absolutely love your videos Freddie. Monica’s an awesome videographer 😊. The Street Twin 900 is certainly a fun and easy to ride bike.
men im watching that from cold pennsylvania, wish to be there . i think im sold on 900 twin as my next ride
You’ll love it Kamil- it’s a superb bike!🙂👌🏻 All my best to you🥶🇺🇸
Gloves Freddie...
Enjoyed that. Thank you.
Thank you Joe!🙂
Great video Freddie, I need to start booking some flights, missing that warm weather and amazing smooth roads.
I was missing it too- paradise!🙂🏝 I’ve got your T120 video to watch tomorrow morning- cannot wait!
Awesome video as always! Enjoy that sun and Merry Christmas to you both!
Thanks Freddie, I hope you had a good Christmas and Happy New Year!🙂
Well living on the coast of the US, you will have a different weather pattern in a couple of days with this blast of cold air coming your way. I have lived here in virginia for 19 years, and never say 15 degrees. That is predicted here on friday night. Never seen 15 degrees here, New Jersey, yes! But never here. Have fun! Merry Christmas and happy new year!
I’ve been watching this US weather on the news- they’re saying it’s a once in a generation weather event that you’re having!😳
Sending all my very best🙂🇺🇸
Beautiful
Great video, lovely landscapes and those roads! Further north in the Tirolean Alps where I live all the bikes have gone to bed. This has got me itching for spring or a trip over there! Nice one!
What a spot- I’ve never visit this part of the Alps, but I’ve just googled it😍 At least they days are getting longer from here on in!
@@FreddieDobbs Well worth a trip I'd say! We're in Innsbruck, a lot of high alpine passes, 40 minutes from Italy and then you have the Dolomites, which I plan to visit next season on the Scrambler or my old T140 (depending on how rebuild goes!). I've driven down there but never on a bike as yet, gobsmacking! Also checkout the Top of the Mountain Motorcycle museum in Hochgurgl, google it ;-) For now we have to put up with snow, ice, fog, rain!
Enjoyed the video, Freddie a nice brace of triumphs I like the T120 but would love triumph to remake the 1970s T150 with that beautiful square tank i’d be a buyer Freddie your brave riding with no gloves on i would feel naked 😂
Oh this is a great shout- I don’t hear many mention the T150- beautiful bike!😍
Thats a great route you guys took, this is what we use for the Volcano Hunt, the annual event we hold for residents and enthusiasts every Easter. I hope to see you on the next one Freddie, we will need you as a judge for the classics again! OH NO, not another excuse to come back and ride Tenerife!
I have heard our marketing team is bringing a Motorhead Cover Band from Germany, who look and sound like the real thing!
Great video, good to see the coverage with the 360 they are great cameras.
Good one. Going to miss Easter 23 for the volcano but DGR May 21st so will be back in time for that one.👍
@@richardbartlett6932 Your a lucky Man Richard...enjoy your cruise my friend and we see you in 2023 with lots of Photos....
I don’t need any more reason than that- if I’m in Europe around Easter, I will be at the Volcano Hunt!😀🌋
I love video, love you Freddie Dobbs
Thank you so much🙂🤜🏼🤛🏼
Phew, you just keep smashing it. Beautifully shot and edited. I keep saying it, but you seem to time your videos for release when the weather in England is appalling. What a tonic! Well done.
I have been incredibly lucky with weather recently (I keep wondering how long my luck will last!😆☔️)
Good work Freddie 👍
Appreciate it Dave!
What an incredible landscape, I have had the pleasure of cycling up to Teide from Costa Adeje, although I would prefer horse power to leg power these days. Next time I am going to check out Tenerife Triumph. Cheers Freddie
I always look at the cyclists and think …how is it possibly to cycle all the way up ?!
What a paradise and what wonderful roads to ride the bike on!
I wonder if Adam needs someone to work with him on the tours 🤔☝🏼
I'd move from Portugal to Tenerife without looking back... but I'd take my Triumph scram with me of course ahah
Keep posting videos like this for me to keep dreaming and gain the courage to do it!
Big hug from Portugal 🇵🇹
Ride safe mate ✊🏼
You never know- absolutely no harm in asking at all!🙂🏍🏍🌋🏝🤘🏼
Sending you all my best over in Portugal, have a brilliant Christmas!
Hey Freddie! I'm from Gran Canaria. To be precise, the latin word for dog is not "canarias" but "canis". There's an old Spanish word for dog which is "can", which obviously has the same latin root. When the Spaniards arrived to the islands they gave them the name "Canarias" because of the number of these wild dogs they found. So "Islas Canarias" would roughly translate as "Isles of Dogs".
Hopefully the slight correction doesn't come across as pedantic! 😄
I'm not living in the UK so I'm very jealous of the amazing time seem to be having in my old riding grounds. Enjoy the winding roads and blue skies. And make sure to have some papas arrugadas con mojo picon accompanied with a frosty beer while you are over there!
Oh my goodness.. I tghout it came from ducks ( canares,,, or so on) Thanks for explanation. Once in Rome our tourist guide said that in August all Italians leave the city, left only " canes et americanes"🤣
Thank you so much for sharing this, it’s opened my eyes🙂
It really is a very special place🏝❤️
La vie " Sans souci" I am jealous....
It’s a lovely thing🙂
Are you missing Tenerife? You seem so at home there and you didn't lose that smile. I can see the attraction for a biker and I want to get back there next year for sure and ride one of those Triumphs.
I really do miss it! It is my idea of paradise🤩 It’s life affirming stuff riding around the island, Dale- you’ll love it🙂
great Episode .. full of the finest essence and spirit of motorcycling ... love the shots with the new Insta..especially that perfectly timed 360 pan on the bend...superb .... you must ride up in the Himalayas on an Enfield Freddie ....for another kind of experience altogether ...Himachal Pradesh , Ladakh.
I’ll save these places as I may go to India in Feb!🙂
Great vid Freddie and slightly spooky as we were riding the same road only a couple of weeks back on our latest vid. The Insta 360 cameras are brilliant tools but take a lot of extra editing time setting the view.
Beautiful trio of Triumph machines 👍👍👍
Ah no way! What a road hey!😀🤘🏼🏍
You are right- it is definitely more time consuming, especially editing the 360 footage!
Beautiful place to ride, good soundtrack too.
BTW. Unlike your old buddy David Mitchell, you haven’t aged a day since you were in Peep Show.
Thanks!🤣👴🏻
Frohe Weihnachten 🎅🎄
Continue to enjoy your videos and your style of presentation. Great job.
Would be great to hear your thoughts on the speed twin 1200 when you have the chance to review it. I am in between that and Z900RS… :)
I am so jealous on your opportunities right now, you can bet. But I am going to Andalucia to kick off the new your with a little vacation and some scooter fun.
Have a merry Christmas with Monika!
P.S. I also sent you a direct message on Instagram with a comment on today's podcast episode.
Scooter fun in Andalucia sounds incredibly fun, have a brilliant time!😀
And thank you, I’ll check Insta now
Little Scottish 🏴 flag at the Papillon stop Freddie, is it Scottish run? Looks lovely, especially here as 4 degrees at the moment in Scotia ☔️
It’s actually the flag of Tenerife! One of the stories I was told is that when Napoleon left Santa Cruz with his fleet of ships, he left a group of Scots on land to protect their escape. Apparently they fought so valiantly, Tenerife dedicated their flag to them.
Did you misplace a glove? You had it around 7:10 leaving the parking spot, but at 7:45 your left hand appears to be uncovered?
I wondered if your gloved hand couldn’t operate the 360 camera, or if was just too warm (no gloves at 13:00)?
Great content as always; greetings from a nice drizzly & foggy Felixstowe - not jealous… 🤐🤐🤐
We’ll spotted- this my due to me toggling the touch screen on the Insta360.
Sending all my best to you in Felixstowe🙂
Hi
Love your videos they are so refreshing, are these tours organised, if so, can I book one?
I hope you are sponsored by Tenerife tourist board, never been but looks fantastic, nothing like you would imagine. Do you mind me enquiring what jacket you are wearing? And is it ok in the medium heat?
That’d be my dream collab to get a Tenerife sponsorship, but no luck unfortunately! Of course; the Belstaff Brooklands jacket (size medium). Don’t size up as it comes bang on size🙂👌🏻
Well done. As an owner of two T120’s I noticed how much better the Bobber sounded then the T. . .Can you find out what the exhaust was?
It’s a Zard exhaust and it really does sound incredible. Really, really just about the best sound I’ve heard🎶
Fred, what happened to your left glove ?
What was it like to ride on the right side of the road? Great video ! Marry Christmas to you and yours ,Freddie!
Very easy, after five minutes it feels normal riding on the right hand side🙂
Thank you Mitch, happy Christmas to you too!🎅
Lovely vid with my all time fave car the Citroen DS. However not a fan of the 360 camera - it is very clever but the image is just too distorted.
Had Adam dropped the other bikes (Guzzis, Enfields etc.) or is that business still running? (Just out of curiosity)
Freddie…. Speed twin 900 or T100?
How did the government of Spain handle C19 in the last couple years? I don't know anyone else in Spain. I want to visit, but lockdown have made me hesitant to travel. I don't want to get stuck outside the US.
Ok 👍👌
I am skinny short guy. I wonder how manageable a street twin 900 would be for a 120lb 171cm guy.
Review the hunter 350
Did you lose a glove...
Why let the facts get in the way of a good story eh Freddie? 😂
This unfortunately, is usually my attitude😆
@@FreddieDobbs always entertaining chap regardless 👏
Gloves man ☹
The 2019 speed twin looks 1000x better, unfortunately the updates lost the retro styling.
Will be honest I'm not liking the non glove thing you have going on lol you always use to wear the gear ! Everyone will say it's peoples choice..which yes it is..but someone still has to put you back together should you come off.when they coukd be saving a life! Just my opinion but just don't think it's worth the risk...
Riding with no gloves? Freddie you scare me.
He had one on. He's a huge fan of Michael Jackson, didn't you know? 😂
This is a better reply than I could have given🤣
But yes- point taken. No excuses (unless I can actually use the Mikey J excuse😆🕺)
Why? Is he borrowing your hands?
@@chr11sf Jacko is everywhere! 😂
