This is part 2 of a 3 part compilation of Kenny Vaughan interviews. I'm hoping this will make it easier for people to find all of these stories. These are clips from interviews I've done with Kenny over the years, so feel free to share this video with anyone who might enjoy it.

I mean talk about not just telling warm and informative stories but omg how hilarious is he as a story teller which goes right to the heart of all these great musicians. I remember some of those early "interviews" with Jerry Garcia -- he was so smart, so articulate, so original, always ready to go someplace that was unknown territory to the straight media, but it made brilliant sense! Captain Trips indeed.
Love Kenny Vaughn, his playing, his knowledge and his story telling, but as a devotee of Gram Parsons, sessions like this frequently overlook that Emmylou Harris connected with James Burton, Glen D. Hardin and Ronnie Tutt because they all played on Gram's albums GP and Grievous Angel, which is where Emmylou (wonderfully) broke through.
So great to hear about these connections - and makes me appreciate the music even more somehow.

Garcia , blue grass albums with his friends are great and also Garcia alone albums are the best and recorded very good as to the Dead and song writer HUNTER is some the most well written songs ever , After the acid years . Garcia was not the most amazing artist , the bass player was unreal , along with several organ players were great artist and the cosmic country sound was not given credit , like the group THE BAND and it's is funny both band played with BOB DYLAN who loved both bands. Don't forget BOB WIER , who was critical rhythm guitar licks that made Garcia better .
Love Kenny Vaughan. Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives are a great band but they collectively have the most music knowledge for a group of four I've ever seen.

Absolutely the best. I first found of Kenny on the Lucinda Williams DVD from 98 Dec from Austin City Limits. The 8 minute version of Joy with the other guitarists Jim Lauderdale and john jackson was amazing. Kenny went totally out of control. I totally loved it. What Kenny can do that the vinyl collectors cannot is to raise up the passion of those early days. He has the total feeling which is hard to communicate. I also grew up in the 60's. I think I am a bit older than Kenny but I am not a musician. I respect his technical expertise for the guitar. I am just someone who passed through the times who has immense respect for the creators of our culture.
Such a chill and insightful view into his experiences with some of the greats. For one thing, I do know that I couldn't have made the same WISE decision about NOT meeting "The Guv'nor"😅, though!! But that tells me a lot about the respectful type of person Cuz is.
Also, I can really appreciate his comment on Jerry Lee-- "No one will ever understand him"--- struck me in a way to want to explore JL music further. Jerry Lee had such a notorious personality that overshadowed his music for those of us that don't know his real talents well. But the anecdotes Cuz gives here about Marty's Unc are the best ----just hilarious ❤😂

the first trip to England Dead footage is so very entertaining. Right after the scene Kenny mentions in the trailer you see a very young Ozzy back stage drinking a beer. That festival was evidently one of Sabbath's first big gigs. Garcia still used the twins as pres mounted vertically most his career going into JBLs, plus also that Mcintosh amp is kinda key.
Kenny's enthusiasm for Fender guitars is fantastic. Makes me feel like a kid again.
The Grateful Dead sounded the best when Garcia and Weir played fender and Gibson guitars through Fender amps (and with one drummer). The "Real Grateful Dead", as Vaughan sez...

I wonder if they(Jerry Garcia's tech's) bypassed the preamp section on the twin reverbs. I thought about it like this... The PREAMP section really colors the tone so maybe they bypassed it somehow? That's what comes to mind when they said "opened it up"? I'm just guessing though...
I love Garcia and the Dead, I love the Pigpen era, I listen to a frew of the later albums, but it's really the 66 to about 77 era I like best, my favourite years are 69-70 and 70 -73.
One of the more important aspects of JG and the GD is that it was always "without a net". "They were terribly inconsistent". It was a high wire act that had the potential for disaster, ie Monterey and Woodstock. But when they mastered the wire... Look out. Nothing better than a band locked in. Happy 80th, Jerry! Jerry Garcia had a Mutron,especially in the late 70's.Owsley Stanley or "Bear" as he was known knew a lot about sound and was their first sound guy and that had a lot to do with The Grateful Dead's early sound.

I saw the tail end of that Jeff Beck set at Bonnaroo, and he finished with Day in the Life. Absolutely mind blowing stuff. Stevie Wonder and Jay Z put on incredible sets that night too. What a great day of music.

sadly, the diabetes did as much damage as anything (not that I am saying heroin was not bad mind you). Being that overweight, bad eating, smoking coupled with diabetes. Not good.

Im a fan of Garcia but not really into the Dead. I really like the JGB live shows. His playing is so unique and recognizable, like Jimmy Page's ,Jeff Beck's , Mark Knopfler or JJ Cale

Great video and Kenny's always insightful. But he left out the importance of Gretsch Guitars in Nashville in the 50's and early 60's because of Chet Atkins.

I went to high school with a friend who became a close friend to Kenny. My friend recently passed away. My condolences to the family and Kenny. On another note, I had the privilege to hear Kenny play with the Don Kelley band on lower Broadway many years ago. Just awesome.

Jerry Garcia was already playing the pedal steel guitar in a 1967 interview at their Haight-Ashbury house. It's in his room, along with his banjo, dobro, etc. Jerry loved American root music of all kinds. I love Kenny Vaugh's recollections on people - he had a great, muted, sense of humor. Letting the story be what it is. Jerry Lee Lewis impression: "If I had gun, I'd shoot that light!" with a straight delivery, with the Jerry Lee's voice:

Please keep doing these interviews, and get some additional interviews with more artists that are good to great story tellers. You're doing a great service for all of us music lovers in the genres that you're covering. So many of our heroes are dying as they reach their 80s and beyond, and it is so wonderful that you are recording these interviews for posterity sake.

Only yesterday (09/30/2023) I found,on U-Tube,of course,Kenny playing with Hal Ketcham at Austen City Limits . I think '88. Also Trisha was on that same show.He looked like a kid , But could he play!!
my favorite low wattage amp is the Princeton reverb. My Dad bought me one for my birthday in 1972 unfortunately I lost it in a pawn shop. I have wanted to kick myself since. But now Im 64 years old I have a hand made fender tweed deluxe, I think its around 15 watts or maybe a little more. I have built 4 of them from scratch I built them from the cabinet to the chassis and all the parts. They all sound great. I have a Fender Deluxe Reverb. silverface, its a 1972 and I love it also, I think its 22 watts, but my favorite is the princeton reverb that I dont have, maybe I will build me one but the older one without reverb and get a stand alone reverb unit. There is a magic in improvisation that is very different from trying to be a rock star, and being..,well, a psychedelic person,lol I really appreciate that sort of thing, sure not everyone likes that ,but to me it's a very satisfying thing to sit through mediocre bits just to see those moments of magic, I love it when a band is struggling or very loose, and then they just lock into something that allows them to take off, I love that. That's a lot of the magic of the grateful dead.
I love all those improvising bands, Man and Help yourself from the UK were influenced by that west coast thing ,they both did some great stuff
So I have watched all 4 of these Kenny Vaughan sessions back to back and enjoyed every second of them. Thank you very much Mr. G. Very Well done!

Kenny is amazing: insightful, informed, sweet, funny, articulate and what a storyteller. Hearing/seeing him laugh is heaven. So engaging.

When he mentioned Hugh Padgham I immediately was reminded of a couple fantastic interviews I watched with him. Unless you are already familiar with these you should definitely check them out. It turns out that A LOT of that early Sun Rockabilly was recorded on Stratocasters and Teles...
The "image" one gets of big Archtop electrics is just the romanticized mental picture.
Yeah, Scotty Moore played a couple different Gibsons... But the meat and potatoes at Sun were made on Fenders and other "catalog" guitars.
I seen Robin Trower in 1983 playing a 83 Squire Strat. Show was in a small hall in Chicago Hts. IL
There's a great clip somewhere of the Dead playin' a ' Playboy After Dark ' gig . Strange ...

Around ‘65 to ‘66, NOBODY was playing as hot and intense as Jeff Beck. The only other guitarists anywhere close were Robbie Robertson and Eric Clapton.
Love Kenny, just outstanding. We lost a giant with Jeff Beck's passing. No one will ever replicate his sound. I was recovering from knee replacement and did not attend his last appearance here in Indiana. Such a bummer and something we are all going to have to come to grips with. The old marble is spinning.
Saw him on Oct 15, 2022 in Huntington NY…I’m still pissy about his passing. A total original.
I look at the views and wonder if people have any idea what they're missing. Kinda like the first trumpet for the NY symphony playing on a sidewalk for the Salvation Army at Christmas and people walking by not even guessing what a treat they were given.
Kenny Vaughn hands down is the absolute best guitar player in country music.

Into a Zone , while there altered equipment on the spot , trial and error , they figured out what works and what doesn't work Now we look back to those early days and say wow that was a genius move.

I'll be honest, I didnt know much about Kenny until he hit my YT time line and and all I can say is wow. An interviewer's gold-mine !! Most bigger name musicians aren't exactly raconteurs to say the least but KV has it.. Townsend is an obvious exception, Springsteen too and I just saw Kristofferson pay such a well said tribute to Steve Goodman.
His recall, chronology, perception and library of stories seem bottomless. And the gear talk is priceless. Loved his take on Garcia's altered state in the back stage trailer and I suggest he find the April 82 piece on Letterman. Weir was obviously double dosed and Jerry did his best to keep it real. Great post. Thanks.
Kenny talked of the "cool stuff Jerry said, in the Letterman appearance with Bob and Jerry, DL asks him why the band, unlike so many others, never minded the crowd openly taping their music, he muses and then responds plainly, "When we're done with it, they can have it" !! ---- reminded me of the Stones "No Expectations" line - Our love was like the water. That splashes on a stone. Our love is like our music. It's here, and then it's gone"

Love listening to this guy, playing or talking! Very interesting to hear his take on musical events and musicians. My dad was a professional musician and he used to do the same thing. While other people just watch someone play an instrument and tap their feet to the tune, others are transfixed by it and realize that they are seeing SOMETHING SPECIAL, even if they don't fully comprehend it at the time. He'd come home from a concert and smile for two days. He'd try and explain it to us and we'd just nod our heads. Of course, none of us really knew what the hell was going on, but he sure did. RIP Pop!! Thanks for another great video. Think I'll go fire up the Cornwalls!

Two things I remember about him and the band; first “The Wall of Sound” amps and speakers also I saw Jerry’s SG output plug (before iPhones) and it had 2 plugs one looked like a normal one but the second looked like a midi?! I’ve never seen a video on his equipment sad to say...
In the mid 70s I went to a jam session. For some reason I tried a guitarists brown Vibrolux. That amp has been on my mind to this date. I have never forgotten how my guitar responded with that amp.
cousin kenny!.. im a huge fan of yours, marty & scruggs... i just saw the stapleton show in NH, i wouldntve gone if you guys werent opening. the Plymouth, NH last year was awesome!.. my description of Jeff Beck goes like this: nobody made a guitar scream for help like JB did in the yardbirds!.
Kenny made some great comments about rootless voicings that I thought was so insightful. Grew up in Golden and took lessons in Boulder and saw Tommy Bolin outdoors after lessons and did Jazz vibraphone gigs in Glenn Miller ballroom with Performance artist Laurie Anderson doing live art

Jeff Beck's influence is really huge from way back. In 1966-67 every damn teenage garage band, and many others, were covering Yardbirds material and imitating Jeff, even without really knowing his name. I used to get really bored, when I would see another new band- and all their material was from the Yardbirds, with maybe a little Stones thrown in.

Love the old wives tale about Dick Dale playing at the ballroom in Balboa and there were so many sweaty kids dancing to his band, the hardwood floors jumping -- that the stand alone Fender reverb tank would have random 'shaken' sounds. So Dale hooked up a rope to the rafters and tied it around the tank so it kind of - hung at a place where he could stand and control it while he played -- he could also 'whack' it at certain times for that effect.
