  • I flew from the UK to Singapore to see a football match at Our Tampines Hub. Geylang International took on Hougang United and I was blown away at how unique their stadium was!

Thank you for making this video. For me personally, I think stadiums like this are the prototype concept for future stadiums not only for places that are land scarce like Singapore for a couple of reasons.
One is the profitably. Normally, you build a stadium at a loss and will need to make money from gate receipts, event rentals and sponsorships to cover the cost of a stadium. With this stadium, the rentals from the f&b and retail stores in the shopping centres will not only eventually cover the costs of building the stadium but also gradually make it self-sustaining and profitable.
Two, local football is not very well supported in Singapore. In other places, you go to a stadium specifically to watch a match or catch an event. Here, you go to the shopping centre for your meal or shopping, realize there is a football match happening in a couple of hours and decide, "Yeah, why not? Let's catch a match. I have time to kill." With that, you have a chance to convert casual shoppers to fans. I won't be surprised some of those people in the paid seats used to watch the match from the "free standing area" you saw.
Our Tampines Hub is also centrally located in one of the biggest housing estates in Singapore minutes away from the main train station and bus interchange. It's fairly convenient to get to.
The stadium does not turn into a white elephant on non-match and non-event days. There is constant foot traffic in the mall every day of the week.
Smaller clubs in smaller cities and towns looking to revamp their stadiums should look to this model. It's a kill two birds with one stone solution for small towns and clubs looking to build a new stadium and shopping hub.
As a Singaporean, I hope our Sports Council looks as this model and revamps all the other aging neighborhood stadiums around Singapore into similar hubs like this.

tampines hub is insane. besides the stadium, the farm on the upper floors provide the ingredients for the hawker food stalls below. the food waste from the f&b establishments go back up as compost. Besides being a commercial mall, there are community facilities like cinemas, drama theatres, libraries, police posts, financial aid, and a running track indoors.

This is a community building and as land is a premium in Singapore, land usage is often maximised. It used to be a regular football stadium with a running track around the pitch until a few years ago before it was torn down, and this building was built in its place.

Most stadiums in Singapore, with the exception of the National Stadium (or the Sports Hub), have at most 2 stands. It's probably due to limited land space and that all stadiums in Singapore, actually double up as a sports facility (with running tracks/gyms/etc.) for the community. Also due to limited facilities, 2-3 clubs in the SPL share a stadium - Tanjong Pagar and Albirex share Jurong East Stadium, Tampines and Geylang share Tampines Hub, Sailors and Balestier share Bishan Stadium and Hougang and Young Lions (and tentatively, Brunei DPMM) share Jalan Besar Stadium.

Thanks for coming to Singapore to watch a league match. Singapore football scene is kind of not so interesting compared to the 90s where we played in the Malaysian league. The old national stadium is always packed with 50000 fans. But after Singapore left the Malaysian league and start our own, the fans just stop coming. It’s sad but that’s the history of Singapore football in short. One of the reason it’s because in Singapore it’s difficult to earn a living playing as a professional player.

Ah my local stadium! Sunderland fan here, been in Singapore and Tampines itself over 15 years now. I remember the old ground - a bit more rustic than the new Tampines Hub! Glad you enjoyed it though, the Hub is a pretty impressive community centre for sports (2 rock-climbing centres, 2 massive indoor sports halls, football pitches, bowling alley, etc), food and a bit of entertainment (Free large screen for community shown films and TV, a cinema that was behind the goal to your right, and across from your seat was the very large 4-floors Tampines library, with fully equipped teaching kitchens, 3d printers, etc etc)!

Tampines is named after a native tree commonly found in the past, the Tempinis Tree. Sounds weird rite. hah). In my humble opinion its just a small stadium compared to what you have in Europe. But it is a town hub where sports, community, food and all mixed together. Singapore is land limited so we stacked all the things together (indoor hall, swimming pools, shops, supermarkets, hawker stalls, theater, government service offices, library, all in 5 or more levels to save space)

In Singapore this has always been a sore spot for the football community. The support for local clubs has been on downward trends (yet people expect the national team to do well), combine with weird government intervention , for example they move the teams to somewhere away from their home base, imagine the feeling of having away games week in week out.
I have to salute to those attendees who travelled with the team....

Attendances in the ground are no more than 1500 unless it is the east coast derby so one stand all you need to shelter you from the sun or thunderstorms when it rains. The completely modern stadium is in the effect the centre of the local community and integrated within a shopping mall restaurants and play areas for children and facilities for the elderly, gardens theatre, cinema and local social services. Its fantastic there is no challenges here all teams fans mix together and its respectful its great. The league has four foreign imports and the rest local players. The pitch is also artificial so can be used for training and by other community groups

In fact, in October 1992, Tampines Town won the United Nations’ World Habitat Award. The award recognises innovative and successful human settlements.
Our Tampines Hub (OTH) is really a club for the public, hence, the amenities that you saw. Well planned!

Hope you had a chance to explore every inch of Our Tampines Hub as there is a supermarket and a Bowling Alley in the basement with more food/eateries.... and sports halls on level 2 & 3 for floorball, badminton, table tennis; a public gym and rooftop swimming pools too! Oh and sheltered tennis courts just next to the stadium block ... It's a lively hub with free late night movies or World Cup matches at the Festive Plaza (where the stage is) to bring the community together. :)

Excellent video Sam. Reminded me of two stadiums, although nowhere near as idiosyncratic and impressive as this one. The City of Coimbra Stadium in Portugal where I saw Académica play Sporting in 2010 (heady days, they're now in the third tier) which has a shopping mall and cinema at one end. The running track reminded me of Meadowbank (before redevelopment). Only concourse I've been to where you could get a pie, a coffee, and time yourself in the 100m. Also there was a gym in one of the corners which meant if you were on one of the treadmills you could watch Edinburgh City for free on a Saturday afternoon

Wow. Enjoyed this video much. I've been told about the Tampines Hub but haven't actually been there. I hope you had a good time here in Singapore! We don't have a lot of space here so we build upwards. That's why the running track was stacked on top of the mall and football stadium.
Personally, I think the weirdest stadium in Singapore is a stadium in name only - "Geylang Stadium". Geylang is a district in the eastern part of Singapore, not far from our National Stadium. It is well-known for 2 things - food and the red light district. Geylang Stadium is situated in the middle of the red-light district. There is no stand so it's just a fenced-off field. However, our national team do train there sometimes. So a "stadium" with brothels nearby. How's that for weird?! Cheers mate!

By the way, Im a Hougang United fan… we actually have the Hougang Hools. Hougang is currently the defending Singapore Cup winners. We used to play at Hougang Stadium and at best had one of the best atmospheres. Moving 15km south to Jalan Besar really hurt the fanbase, and we are praying to return to Hougang soon.
