Major radiator dilemma SOLVED for $50 🤯

  • Remember the big issue we ran into with the radiator from the 1936 Hudson Terraplane? Remember how it put a halt on the entire project? Well, we took it to the local radiator shop to see if they could repair it but they said it would need a new core which would cost us $1,500. This bad news caused Bad Chad to get creative... he literally just fixed the entire issue for $50 👏

I really like how Chad fixes stuff. So many folks think everything needs to be done by a specialist and to Concorse standards. There are many solutions and levels of build. Enjoy the way you do it.

G'day Bad Chad and Queen Jolene.
It doesn't matter what you do. The Whinger Group will always be against it.
But the radiator fix is a goodin.
And that's what it's all about, making things work with what you have.
It's called modifying it to fit.
So, thanks for sharing ✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.

Chad, you could put a piece of radiator hose from old spout to new spout. Ask Nathan if it is doable . Have Jolene take a picture of the distance from old to new radiator opening for a short piece of radiator hose, that way you just have to open top radiator cap.

Nice job fitting that new, affordable radiator! If you have room, maybe weld in a plate on the bottom to beef it up.
As far as "boiling" the radiator, if you look inside and it looks a bit stopped up, a bit of a muriatic acid soak for a few minutes will disolve a lot. Just don't soak it TOO long, you can dilute the acid a bit if you want to be more careful..
Of course, best check for leaks first.
$1500 for a basic radiator ?! I know we have inflation, but, no.

An important part of radiator selection, is the number of cores. Your new radiator is similar in height and width, to the old one, but only half the thickness, due to it having a lot less cores. Fewer cores means less cooling ability.

Is everyone forgetting that the whole thing is “ the radiator “ just the same as if the original was soldered into that frame? No different than the one Chad cut out. The frame will be installed the same ( I assume) as the original. You would fix it the same as if it were original. Story time……I got an old backhoe with a roached radiator and the company that made the radiator was still in business. They would rebuild the thing for $3,500.00 American. I found a brand new replacement one for a line boring machine that met all my requirements except mounting and hose routing for $300.00. Fabricated my own mounts and Bob’s your Uncle……still using it 5 years later….so far…..

Certainly some kind of economical grill could be fashioned to provide some protection for the delicate radiator fins, as well as greatly enhance the finished appearance of the car.

How about covering the core so any hot mig Sparks or weld balls don't damage the core ?

Their is also a threaded rod that goes in front of the radiator between both fenders and install the splash apron before you set the fenders in place.

I must confess that I can only admire your skill and ingenuity but like so many other people l think that a bit of further thought would have definitely allowed you to consider think ahead about having to do possible repairs to the radiator or the fact that constant vibrations with no bushings could destroy everything. Hopefully the replacement radiator has no leaks or faults otherwise a lot of work for nothing
