I say Amanda Forsythe and Thomas Cooley + the wonderful ensemble of Voices of Music are better than anything out there or better than anything that will ever be out there.

I agree that they are very good, and overall the ensemble with the support of Voices of Music is probably the best, but their voices are not as well produced or controlled (especially Forsythe whose breathing and phrasing are not as good) as Sandrine Piau and Topi Lehtipuu.

Crowe and Padmore have an ethereal/spiritual quality that, for me. sets them apart; also, the tonal qualities of their voices mesh beautifully. It is a distinguished musical collaboration, in my experience. I listen to it regularly and reserve very quiet moments to savour its intense, plaintive richness.
I was also moved by aspects of Royal's and Lehtipuu's renditions, but in snatches only.

Undoubtedly Crowe and Padmore . Apart from the fact that their voices are wonderful , the tempo and their way of singing this, the greatest of Handel's duets , is perfection. It is dawn and needs to be gentle and not too fast just as they sing it . Wonderful.

  • @erinmatt

I think Mannion and Ainsley have the right approach to this music, which is simplicity and sincerity as well as rhythmic agility. I'm surprised I liked them best. I know the Royal/Bostridge recording and the Crowe/Padmore from repeated listeneings (I'm a big Handel fan), and they are both good. The Piau/Lehtipuu suffers in that her English vowels are a bit bizarre and her emphasizing then quickly fading on each note becomes distracting after a while. Lehtipuu has a beautiful voice, and I can't fault his English, but the voices don't meld. I have to mention here that the version I know best is the John Elliot Gardner recording from the 1980s. Patrizia Kwella and Maldwyn Davies are exceptional in this music, really singing as one.

Always difficult to make a firm decision! All artists concerned are exemplary and the direction and orchestral accompaniment is exemplary in all cases. It’s all down to personal taste….I do however have a preference for Kate Royal and Ian Bostridge. It seems to me that the aria needs a certain sense of detachment……Handel seems to saying a plangent, bittersweet goodbye to something. In this respect I stand by my choice.
