  • The universe of Warhammer 40k takes inspiration from A number of different sources. One of these is the fantastical universe of Lovecraftian Horror. Many of the themes, direct references and hidden gems have had A massive affect on the lore of 40k. This is the beginning of a brief look into those inspirations, and how they are presented in the Lore.

Hello all, I hope everyone previously had a nice Easter! Last time I posted was at about about 800 subs and now to be over 1,000 had been a true blessing. A massive thank you to my first Thousand Sons I can believe you have tolerated my enough to get me to this point so thank you so much! To hopefully my next thousand I hope to make stuff that will make you want to stick around and see what I have in store. For these Beyond 40k videos they will be an infrequent thing, but I hopefully will find some interesting topics that surround or influence the awesome grimdark future. When you think about it, the chaos daemons, the chaos gods, the C’tan, the Genestealer Cults, and the Tyranid Hive Mind all just scream Lovecraftian horror. I believe HP Lovecraft would find the lore of Warhammer 40,000 a little interesting. Awesome video! Looking forward to Part 2 of this topic!

You really should look into the TH-cam channel HorrorBabble, they do excellent narrations of Lovecraft's works and have a wide variety of them available to listen to for free. Anyone who considers themselves a fan of 40k should read at least most of Lovecraft's works to see the stuff that inspired the Warp and Chaos. It is rather profound.

As a huge fan of both Lovecraft and 40k I most definitely saw Lovecraft's influences in 40k along time ago. Dan Abnett has been especially influenced by him and Robert Chambers The King in Yellow. The short story of Eisenhorn A Crown For Black Cloth Additional being obvious. And all out naming the Big Bad of the Beta Bequin books The King in Yellow too. Also, much of the fluff of the Fantasy Flight TTRPGs such as Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader. The Halo Devices, The Menagerie, The Tyrant Star and the whole of the Haarlock campaign are incredibly Lovecraftian.

Great video man! My favourite parallel between the universe of HPL and 40k has to be the unknowable, mind-breaking vastness of things. The sheer scale, be it lives lost in planet-destroying wars that rage for multiple generations, or the horrifically-immeasurable cosmic God’s, of whom function oftentimes in the grey area of morality (our worthless human idea of good and evil) when not pure evil incarnate.

Im a big 40k fan and i have a theory that the "grimdark" 40k style is just Lovecraftian ideas reworked with Masonic symbolism. Its losing that edge in ways but the 3rd edition i started playing pretty much outlined that EVERYTHING is doomed, all these amazing empires were either slowly decaying or are falling to madness (by the power of the dark gods). Glad to see im not the only one thinking it and i look forward to part 2 :)

I really, really like how you explain both settings to the listener. I love both settings and admit that I really never saw the influence of Lovecraft in the Warhammer universe. You provided great examples of of both settings and how they correlate together. Great job.
The only nitpicking thing I would say is that the warp does not have only four gods. It is just those four have the greatest power. The lore talks about other lesser gods representing other emotions of aspects like malice.

From what i have heard the harrowing in the Ghoul stars was very Lovecraften, Something came in to our realty that was not of the warp, or real space in 32M, It destoryed humans and aliens alike, it killed 100s of worlds, and wiped 12 SM chapter's, In the end it took the use of forbidden weapons from the Dark age of Tech, and warp powers to hold it back, in the end Humanity won, but ever since then that area of space has never been right, And the inquisition wipped most of the info on it from records, it truly scared the Imp of man

    You are criminally undersubscribed .
Lovecraft and 40k . Hand and glove! Without Lovecraft, our fave dystopia of constant war ,would not have been half as complex and fascinating.
40k "begins" in media res with The Emperor. we follow along ,changing perspective sometimes to view things as aliens view them, sometimes as the chaos devotees view them, but never as the denizens of the warp view them. Remarkable oversight! We are given hints ,tantalising crumbs , describing the indescribable.
Most of what we "know" is false. Most of what we hold sacred is a lie. It matters not! In 40k there is only war. War for survival, war for dominion ,war for war's sake.
Yes the creatures of the warp, when they deign to look upon us, are terrifying, yet their attention is ever inwards. For even there, in the endless sea of souls, there is only war. Everyone against everyone else, in a mad scramble without rime or reason.
Do the races of the galaxy war because the gods do, or the gods war because the races of the galaxy do? Maybe He on His golden throne has unraveled the mystery, but He is not talking.
He keeps His lips sealed. For if he were to open them.. His scream of anguish would shatter the galaxy.
He the liberator, the denier of gods, is worshipped as one! Worse one thousand humans are sacrificed per day, in His name.
SO, He keep silent . Even in the face of one of His primarchs returning He keeps silent. Respect His agony and leave Him be.
In the man time .we have a war to fight. No time for lolly gagging around. Does it matter who against? Does it really? No! There is only war!

This was a great video! Thought about this a bit more tonight.
I think the Lovecraftian angle describes well the horror of the fall to chaos and madness of individual humans in the 'modern' Imperium of 40k, with the overarching pantheon behind it all. The difference is that in Lovecraft's world, chaos is effectively winning: We see the individual narrative of discovering worlds already effectively lost to corruption without most people knowing. It is also a good take on the horror of the warp (see also the video on Event Horizon being like a prequel to the horrors of the warp - will add link below). However, Lovecraft has no organised fight against chaos of the Imperium, or the struggles of the other races. Certainly though, Warhammars rather strong 'brand' of chaos is built on these shoulders (although Warcraft also plays with it, especially the old ones themes, just not overtly because Warhammer is pretty keen on 'lawyers for the IP gods'.
(Worth also noting that Blizzard developed a surprisingly interesting meta-story from their cartoonish orcs vs humans beginning, with implacable ancient gods driving species between worlds, entire worlds as gods, etc. - not so well known given the normal encounter with WoW. Unfortunately, Blizzard seem to be approaching their own End Times)
Robert E Howard and the world of Conan are perhaps good analogies to the world during the Great Crusade of ~30k - Conan continually discovers new societies and cultures: each/many of which has their own unique dark problems, cults to eldrich gods: implacably ancient and unfathomable, the mere existence of which drives men mad. The difference again is that Conan is not driven on a quest to unite his world through conquest (he is more of a primarch figure, if primarchs moved around and rose to primacy in multiple societies, without a mystical daddy finding and uniting them all. Perhaps Conan's world is more akin to the Warhammer Fantasy setting, without quite as many overtly contrasting races playing centre stage (other races are decaying remnants of ancient times, or hidden mostly from view - back to chaos cults again).

Love the video, the presentation and concepts! I find 40k and Lovecraft melds together exceptionally well. Text wall inbound, because I've had a looot of thoughts on the topic beforehand.
Fantasy Flight's 40k RPGs (Particularly Dark Heresy and its location, the Calixis Sector) is, at its core, very similar to Chaosium Inc.'s Call Of Cthulhu, being a d100 system with brutal combat and prioritising investigation, even incorporating a Fear/Sanity mechanic when facing more hideous entities. This certainly isn't coincidental, as various unknown entities are frequently alluded to, things like 'The King In Rags & Tatters' and 'The Beast of Solomon', which are left mysterious for Game Masters to make their own conclusions, but all carry an eldritch horror vibe. Heck, 'House Of Dust & Ash' even includes a rather familiar Silver Key as a trinket for an auction.
Unfortunately, I find most 40k lore doesn't really paint the Chaos Gods as vast unknowable entities - But, rather more as petty, petulant, squabbling warp-children with omnipotent powers (Even Tzeentch often preferring to solve problems by sheer brute force than anything resembling guile), but in that respect they cater to Azathoth's 'blind idiot god' motif, being vast entities of apocalyptic power, but an intellect below that of the average human. Which is fitting, given they're essentially incomplete consciousnesses, being merely an aspect of sentient thought, as unable to understand a human as humans are unable to understand them. Also, like Nyarlathotep, they often appear in lore under a variety of guises - I heard one instance where Khorne was worshipped as a great blacksmith spirit, perpetually toiling in a forge of brass, rather than a skull-hoarding armchair general with anger issues.
On the xeno side of things, eldar can be viewed as Lovecraftian from a certain angle, with bizarre, beautiful, illogical, long-empty cities that bring to mind the Great Race of Yith and the Elder Things. Even their behaviours are somewhat Lovecraftian, as they operate their schemes using extra-dimensional understanding of a situation, using divination to kill a future threat by killing its origin, which makes their behaviours seem alien or illogical if viewed without context. Then there's Necrons, in their ancient tomb-like empires slumbering under the surface, stirring in their dreams, one day rising to expunge the unaware human populace that infests their ancient realms - That's rather self-evident.
Mostly though, I'd say the Tyranids make the most Lovecraftian case - Aside from the incredibly Innsmouth-style Genestealer Cults, they consist of a vast, singular entity that has only begun drawing into the galaxy, a cosmic predator of unknown origin whose vast, teeming hordes are nothing but cells for its digestive process, its mind so vast and alien that it blots out the Warp itself. If Chaos gains ultimate victory, the galaxy lives on in eternal turmoil. If the Tyranids gain ultimate victory, there will be nothing left to indicate the galaxy every hosted life at all, all the struggle, pain and sacrifice of the setting's long history becoming meaningless and pointless. Which, I'd state as the grimdarkest ending. Also, I guess Lictors have straight-up cthulhu faces, but that's probably more a reference to mindflayers.

I think there is very little of Lovecraft in the original (proper) GW settings (i don't keep up with corporate GW product).
The entirety of Chaos in both Warhammers was lifted from Moorcock's writings.

Yeah I learned about the fan animation Astartes from the awesome yt Mr H but what made me invested into the lore of Warhammer 40k and its grimdarkness is that it gave me lovecraftian vibes (Edit also Beserk vibes bc of the Warp thing )

This seems like an awesome up-and-coming channel, props for the high production quality, great voice, engaging content. My only constructive advice would be that the intro seems unnecessarily long; the "loading" screen where nothing is happening lasts 40 seconds. Giving the content room to breathe is great, but almost a minute of dead air is pushing it a bit. Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to seeing this channel develop!

Imagine walking home from work only to encounter fairies, but they aren’t the ones of songs and legends but are twisted monsters eating a mother and her child, imagine as you run away in pure primal fear trying to make sense of what you saw, chalking it up to either a prank or just your imagination, only to find the child’s blood splattered a cross your hands

Tzeentch just being a mask of Nyarlathotep would make so much sense too 😂😂
Also remember Nihilakh seer head? Its probably one of the species actual Great Race of Yith used to live and their inhabitation of their bodies gave the poor bastards some clairvoyance and when they eventually left this ability caused Necrons to kill them all save one's head. Great way to put some actual Lovecraft species in the 40k
