This podcast of Robert Greene was for us, us who are entering in 30s , who still had not found meaningful job or Bussiness or work, who thinks there 20s have wasted, who has now awakened to ask hard questions to ourselves. Thankyou Tom for calling Robert Greene. Every word of him was relevant.

1:02:01 So I have a good example of someone changing their life on their 50th birthday. My mother was a life long bartender at 49 years old. I was 22 and had just gotten out of college. On her 50th birthday, we took every penny we had ($14,000) and moved to a vacation island off the coast of Georgia and started a very successful vacation rental company. I know that me being 22 throws off her number a little, but I promise that I was completely useless for at least the first two years. I run large parts of the company now, but we still couldn’t run without her. This was 12 years ago. I’m now 35 and she’s 61. It definitely wasn’t easy, but I wanted to give a really encouraging example to anyone 50 and struggling. My mother will never have to work again.

Right?! Its wild how growing up I have been pre-dispositioned to seek a white-collar, office job to be happy. On paper it makes sense, but holy moly is it draining the soul out of me.
Never would I have thought that an interaction with a stranger at the grocerry store could envoke SOO much more pleasure than "going HAM at my job". Being able to make someones day easier literally makes my day for me and I love to sit and reflect on good conversations I had with people.
Maybe I am just starved for genuine connections.

  • @MichaelCBryan
    @MichaelCBryan 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

I’m going to join some of the comments here about talking about older people. I’m turning 60 this summer. I was an abused child and my mother killed herself and I suffered from extreme depression, anxiety and suicidal tendencies. I worked for many years in office jobs and was miserable and in my mid-50s I left my office job and created an LLC and I moved from New York City to Los Angeles. I do cross training four days a week, boxing three days a week and I help people all over the world with their mental health. I am also an actor in and a writer who is selling a TV show and a movie in Los Angeles, and I am writing a book about my journeys towards healing. I love Robert Green‘s message to a tremendous degree. And at the same time we arrive when we arrive. Keep the urgency alive. The equestrian horse that society is not expecting to see are those of us over the age of 50 and over the age of 60 coming into a fully realized sense of self. Believe in yourself. Love yourself. Celebrate yourself. And know that if I can be here after all that I’ve been through and not be dead, but thriving, so can you.

Robert Greene had some wonderful insights. Respectfully, Tom, I think you can be a little more respectful in verbalizing your opposing opinion rather than continuing to hammer the fact that you don't agree into your guest. However, I agree with both sides of the coin. On one end, "it was meant to happen so that I learn" but also "I am choosing to learn from this". I think in life, it is a little bit of both. We aren't totally giving our power away but we also recognize the possibility of something greater than us and that even in bad times, life happens for us, not against us.

If you knew Tom and worked for his company in the early days you would laugh your ass off at the moral pillar he presents himself as. He is a figment of his own imagination and figures that because he rose on the backs of 22 year olds working 7 days a week, 70 hours a week with pitiful compensation and no time off (my daughter being one of them), he is now a guru of success. The man is a total joke. Lots of people make "millions", even billions. He's not special.

If you are in your 30's,40's or 50's etc finding your direction or purpose need not be difficult. It is only more challenging to be outwardly seen to be achieving your goal/purpose. Look deeper within yourself, to be free of being measured by others, so that you can break free of your past. You then have mastery of at least yourself rather than simply an ambition to change the world.

The part about not reading history is insanely true. I study a lot of history and it's always been wacky... few people have a completely charmed experience. The truth is you have nothing to lose by being positive about things. It's certainly the lesser of evils and it's not even an evil, believing things are possible is the first step to doing things. There are WAY more distractions now that ever. And he's on the button that social media is number 1. It can be a powerful tool or a mindless sucker of time. The less you use it for the wrong reasons the more you can figure out what's important to you, is what I'm finding.

Unfortunately I was smoking weed at that time to deal with ptsd but also using it as a crutch of dependency. Stopped smoking 3 weeks ago and that cured a variety of "mentality congruence issues". A veil was lifted and now an extreme amount of the advice I've heard my mentors say is all falling into place.
Truth about the easy dopamine hits. But nothing compares to the satisfaction I feel when overcoming issues that would mentally sideline me. Surrender to the process; and use the Stoic teaching from the greats to prevail.

Oh man. I'm just blown away by this discussion. I really resonate with the rebel without a cause idea. Like 10 years ago I came to understand problems with capitalism. But rather than looking for a cause to work with for a better world, I became isolated. Thinking the world was bad. People are evil, and everyone was gonna die. And for like 5-7 years i was a full nihilist. It sucked in every imaginable way. Accidentally though I found a cause and the last 4 years has been a process of reintegrating parts of myself and world that I abandoned. Seeing, that maybe people are not all bad after all, maybe there is hope. And every more, creating my own path of hope for me and others. For me it ment starting an regenerative agriculture business. I'm still rebel and criticise capitalism, but now instead of only critique, I learn to play the game and are proactively developing a path towards a more humane game to play. As Buckminster Fuller once said: " If you want to change something, don't waste your energy on fighting the old system. Instead focus on developing a new one, which will make the old one obsolete."

Robert speaks about having family members who were involved in the Holocaust. I have the same background. Both of my parents, almost all my aunts and uncles, and my grandparents on both sides are either survivors or were killed. Most of my aunts and uncles went on to have very happy marriages and close relationships with their children. My mother, on the other hand, was so broken that she defined herself by that experience till she died at 92. She was depressed her entire life.
Esther Perel had parents who had both lost their ENTIRE families in the Holocaust, yet fell in love and created happy lives. She had the most perfect line in an interview I saw. "Some people live and others just don't die". So brilliant, so true. I was so struck by that line that I just wrote a short memoir essay built around that very true premise. The Choice, indeed.

Fantastic talk as always. Just one thing I totally think differently on, and that is most people I have encountered had their course-correction in their 40's and 50's, and rarely anyone in their 20's. Maybe some in their 30's, but most were indeed above 40. That is because they start to look back at their lost time and missed opportunities and cannot bare to miss out on more. So many who ignored the call in their youth find it even harder to ignore it later in life, They look for another chance, for freedom, and for genuine fulfillment. It is not impossible. Quite the contrary. It is near impossible to convince our 20-year old selves to course correct. In any event, don't get defeated thinking it's impossible. At least, give it a shot. We all owe ourselves this much.

I disagree with about going down the “wrong” path and making “mistakes”… I am 53 and my life is better than it has ever been!!! Not despite the “mistakes’ but because of them! I’m growing my business and feel SO fulfilled! I am so grateful that I have always lived a fluid life and have never, nor will I ever be the rigid person he describes. It makes me feel a little sad for the journey he has taken. I hope he can get a bit out of his head and feel the beauty of love and light💕

Thank you for writing this. I have to say, I see so many comments about how inspiring this conversation was and I actually felt that the message Robert ultimately gave was that if you don't figure out the "right" path for you in your 20s, then you won't and your future is bleak. I was quite disappointed and completely disagree.

Sect 53 of this video He talks about things being near impossible to do after age 50 re to his book Mastery. I can see why some people would that as giving up but that is so far from the truth. We are more than the sums of our parts. we are the lineage of experiences that that some of these younger people have not had and when confronted with may need the support that through our experiences we can give. Our brains never stop growing until the day we take our last breath. This based on science. Not anyone's place to say we no longer have a purpose or the ability to reach our goal.

I think what most viewers need to realize is that it's never too late to get on the path to slaying your demons and that these are just self-help merchants selling a brand. Redefine what success means to you. Is it being a good mother/father, philanthropic deeds, debt freedom, an active love life? If you're constantly striving at a certain income level and don't have a purpose for that money you're going to be unhappy.

Nowadays is so common to listen podcasts that people only converge on the content and their convictions are not put into test or even stressed through arguments, or maybe they are but something was not good for their image or positioning to get published. Im 38, lived interesting life, learned alot, worked alot, had interesting jobs, projects, professional experiences, made few dreams come true etc, meaning I wasnt lazy or wasting my time. Guess what, I still feel afraid, stressed ,regretful, struggle with sleepless nights worring on time, future, things I feel i need to create and I still dont have. its the mortality that makes it so, no matter what you do its ending, this doesnt sound positive but I belive this is the ultimate truth and unless you learn how to live in NOW , the so called accomplishments , finding your purpose, hustle and nonstop chase of success wont make you happy and this is all blah blah. Life ends, thats why we have all that enxity and I believe Robert does too, no matter how many books he has already written. Its a sorrow of being human.

I am hereby a fan. note: I hope you never feel the dark hell of true depression. I'm driven AF, have been in the tough music biz full time for 24 years, and have faced down all manner of bullshit and life-threatening illness. I'm still here for my family. I'm still 'grinding' daily to make my side hustles my main income. But depression is its own beast. When it sinks its deep fangs into you, the idea of "not sitting in it" sounds awesome, but has a way of losing its power in the muck. I think what you WOULD do differently is to take aggressive and consistent action when the depression lifts enough to allow you to catch your breath; of that, I have no doubt. Much respect, and thanks for showing up for all of us.

My take on life is based on a few premises.
One is a formula (Potential - Commitment = Nothing) the other is that "Repetition is the Mother of Skill" and finally develop the skill of persistence because persistence draws in luck or fate.
As long as you're persistent you will always be in the right place and at the right time even though at times you may feel you're not, persistence will eventually show the way.
