- I'm visiting my old university in Vietnam after 7 years! 🎓 It’s a mix of nostalgia and surprise as I revisit my campus, the streets I walked daily, and the places where I made unforgettable memories. From improved toilets to the chaos of parking motorbikes, here’s how much has changed-and how much hasn’t.

Hi, I'm Uyen Ninh but please just call me Uyen!

I love watching you go „dammit!“ when you see the upgrades 😭😂 I would love to see how it was back in your days!
As a final year student, i'm so happy to be in a same school as you. Our university is changing and it is going to have a new building when i leave university too
Vietnamese universities are so different from the ones I know about, I didn’t realised they had uniforms and compulsory sport :0
The university that i studied didn’t have uniform but i had to pass sports contest, otherwise i’m not allowed to graduate 😂😂
@@huonglt206 What do you mean, broken leg? DO YOU WANT TO GRADUATE OR NOT? xD
They had a certificate for sport and military training in University/College. You need it for graduation, but only need to do it once. If you studying for second degree and already obtain one from first degree, you can skip them altogether.
In my state in the US, public colleges have a swim requirement to pass. My mom is terrified of swimmimg, but she did the 4 laps required; got out and vomited all over; and has spent decades out of the water since. 😂
@@phillisobGoddamn, every major?
I liked how you were still talking in the present. My uni…my home… I go here…buy here. 😊 You still feel connected to this place probably. ❤️
❤
Uyen , your university tour was awash with nostalgia, remembering your time, studies,
I could feel the warmth you felt when you saw the familiar places , coloured with so many memories
Thanq for sharing your times, feelings , thoughts
Bless you dear , make more golden memories wherever you go
Fond memories of my time in Hanoi, attached to a local college. I was working there almost 20 years ago, but the alleyways look so much the same. By the way, Uyen if you read this, the expression you are looking for - about the vendors selling fresh produce on the street- is "open air market" (you said "sky market", which sounds wonderful).
This kind of market is called "sky market" in Vietnamese - but yes, it's an interesting term, now I think about it.
the increased tuition probably paid for all the upgrades XD so either you pay lower tuition or pay more for the cool stuff
🇪🇪 🇫🇮 🇪🇺 We have free university education.
@@verttikoo2052 it not, it hit on your parent tax
@ There is no problem paying taxes for education. I am from Finland and in Finland children even get free school meals. University students pay few euros.
No, no, there is no more cool stuff here. The leaders of the university can pocket more money. That is the only thing that happens. In the past, a CGPA of 3.6/4 only happened once every few years for each major; now, there are 10 of them every single year
The university should give you an honorary doctorate degrees in Business and Marketing. 1 you are a celebrity and 2 you advertised the univeristy to a large global audience!
Then what, Vietnam college degree is trash. Thousands of students earn masters and doctoral degrees then become janitor, grab driver, …
I studied at Vietnam National University vnu( quite near Uyen’s university) and We don’t need to wear uni form. A lot of my friends wear pajamas and slippers to the class. My place is quite chaotic cause lot of universities are there. We do sport or military training at a different place. I never see anyone playing sports at the campus.
I am an university student who study in HCMC but I came from Hanoi. I live in Hanoi for like the first 20 years of my life and now im in the Southern part of Vietnam. This video really makes me miss my hometown. Cant wait to go back home on Tet holiday.
i love how it's universal that universities upgrade everything after you leave. honestly it's so cool to see what it's like there, busy but honestly it's really beautiful imo. and the plants and all the trees are amazing, i'd love to one day see all those tropical plants in person lol, i wonder how many i could find of wild giant versions of my little houseplants.
I enjoy moving my body but I hated the pressure of performing in sports classes at school - which made me perform even worse. Those sport requirements at your uni would be my worst enemy
Czech universities also have sport requirements (for two semesters, I think), but I don't think there's "pass" grade (ETA: Just attendance), and there's a lot of options to choose from so I ended up doing two semesters of a course designed to accommodate students with disabilities, as well as introduced able-bodied students to that sort of games, like including a lesson with the deaf theatre school - that was great! Much more an "enjoy moving your body" sort of thing.
My college had health class requirements instead where you had to pinky promise that you’re going to exercise more.
Same!! That is absolutely my hated subject.
@LikeAMelone me too but I had the Lucky I was free from school Sports because they we're Fed Up too call the ambulnce😂
I really enjoyed this video Uyen, thanks for showing us your university and where you lived and all the little markets and shops 👍
Enjoyed this tour of your University. I bet it was nice to go back and see your old neighbourhood.
I feel the same about my university. We live just 20 minutes from where my husband and I met, our college apartments. It’s all upgraded and like you, right after we left! 😂😂😂 happy that our youngest is going to our same college in 2 years ❤
Aww that's so cool 😊
I really love how positive, empathetic and just what lovely human beings you and German husband to be are. It's becoming quite rare but I feel you were made for each other and exemplify what it mean to love. ❤❤❤
You're just friendly and likable.
And you look so hyped and proud to show your home town and your university :)
Your old uni looks very nice! Though it's a pity to hear you didn't have a good time studying. I am a foreigner and a teacher at HANU University. The standards for young students are really high. Back when I lived in the dorm, there was a young lady practicing her German until late at night, right next to my room. I began to think of you every time I heard her reciting german textbooks.
I loved this walk through your old neighborhood in Vietnam, more videos like this please
I was in University in California 50 years ago and we had to take 4 semesters of Sports but some were cool like hiking, skiing and surfing and many many more. I loved sports so I would have taken some anyway. I loved the tour and your school is so close to everything and beautiful to! University, Public in California is about $10-20 Thousand dollars a year.
Sameeee! When i was in uni we were the first batch of students and the building was still being built. When i graduated i came back and it now looks like singapore airport
My first year of uni we had to wear skirts to classes and the dining hall, and the only drinks available at all were regular milk, chocolate milk and cold water. Some kind of orange flavored sugar water at breakfast. No soda pop, no vending machines. You had it great!
Always amazing to go back in time and visit the Alma mater. The feeling is kind of weird though, you know every corner of it, feeling all the emotions that were there at the time, kind of 'above' those currently studying, but at the same time understanding that you no longer there. What's left is just the memory. Each time is like a deja vu.
I can really see how hanoi resembles jakarta a lot. From the infrastructure, the streets, food vendors and how motorbikes are the main transportation vehicle for most students 😂 feels a bit like home watching this hahah
Thanks for sharing., is interesting to see such rustic settings of your university and the surroundings. Had been watching your videos lately., enjoying it. Have not visited your country., will be in my list.👍👍👋🏻
Filipinos have that tofu pudding as well, we call it "taho". It's silken tofu with sweet syrup and sago/tapioca :) I miss it so much too!
All tofu in indonesia is called 'tahu' ! Its so cool how they have familiar names 🎉
In Vietnam we call it “tàu hũ” or “đậu hũ” 😄
@@dangle03 Well, in the north of Vietnam we call the tofu pudding "tào phớ" and the firm tofu is called "đậu phụ"
My father graduated from Dresden and my mother did her course in Leipzig. They’re lucky to have met very kind German friends just like your boyfriend. I was told I received a lot of toys and bottled milk and stuffs sent from Germany in my childhood.
Thank you for bringing the image of Vietnam to Germany and the world via this channel.
Now I'd love to see you show us your German Uni in comparison :D
your city is quite similar to our capital city DHAkA (BD) . NICE to see your old memorable places🖤🖤
My situation with sports in university in Thailand was the inversion. Sports is not compulsory unless it's part of your sport education or sport science major. Many, however, take the course in order to increase their grade average. As I sucks at sports, however, that was not an option to me.
1:04 That's the only "school when I graduate" situation that makes me feel lucky
lol
I love the small vegetable shops! Reminds me of my time in Japan :) I used to buy all my food at these small shops in the streets of Tokyo :D
I would regularly visit my old university after graduating as it was a convenient place for me and my friends to come and work on projects together, and yea, i too watched our university build brand new labs and renovate classrooms and add all these cool new things mere 2-3 years after we left and we were just like "where was all this when WE were students, damnit! We could've used ALL OF THIS 3 years ago!!"
Very good tour through the building maze, we could really feel the climat of that place
Wow thanks for sharing! Interesting to see the differences and similarities.
My university built a 54 million dollar library right after I left. The old one was horribly small and miles and miles away by foot. Had to walk all hours of the pitch black night. New one less than 10 min walk. We had no fast food or other chain restaurants when I was there. When I left they got a ton. We had no security at the dorm anyone could walk into the dorm, from the street or otherwise. After I left they got scanners, key cards, and the doors were locked at all times.
Reminds me a bit of the place where I lived before moving here - a Turkish fruit and veggie stall just outside the door.
Being strapped for cash is part of student life, I remember those times from my internship.
It's so on brand for a university to get nicer things once we leave! 😂😂
😂 mine got an entire medical school after i left, and now they're getting a law school, too.
I like the university uniform i think it looks pretty cool, i really like your Vietnam videos 👍lovely university. Wow look at all the motorbikes hah 😮😊 i love this!
2:15 "Where did they get the money?" - well, maybe from the new tuition ;)
I loved see and learn more about Vietna and your culture. We have very in comun Vietna and Brazil. ❤
I'm in my last term at TMU and live near where you lived when you were there. That's good to know!
$500 euros per semester? hahaha... oh no... *cries in USA where it is $15,000/semester or more*
Yes but you also gotta remember that the minimum wage in Vietnam is less than 1 dollar
Like this Video. It is nice to see how live is in vietname.
As a TMUer myself, welcome back
Great video. This was really interesting.
I had badminton as a subject at university too. That was in the GDR.
So sweet when she told the German BF that now we are going for a walk 🎉
Tr ui chị ui, em follow chị lâu lắm r ý, siu hâm mộ chị lun ý, cho em xin vía sang đức nha!!! Chứ em học 2 năm nay ms chỉ có A2 thui 😭😭😭
New Uyen video!! Best bday gift I could ask for:))
1:16 i love the she says euro
Hey Uyen, I really love your videos and you are a beautiful person!❤ I feel very bad for your back, please try to walk more straight, it will effect you later very bad and will give you a lot of pain.
I enjoyed your video on university in Vietnam.
Having a dress code and uniforms at university is crazy! I have never heard of that!
Very interesting thank you for sharing!
Am from Singapore 🇸🇬
Welcome you to visit our country.
Now I have really bad cravings for Asian street food. Any. Don't care which part of Asia. All of the countries have delicious food choices on the streets as far as I know
Love the video!!
Your most crowded street in Hanoi would be called a low traffic one in my country. 😂
I've heard the term Sky Market, but idk what it means. In my dialect, American-English, we call those markets "open air markets," because they are out in the "open air" - not indoors.
If you want to visit Canada, you can stay with me !
Can we get a village tour of yours , please 🥺
This was really cool to see!
3:55 I did wonder. Even though I did not actually study at Universities in Vietnam, I only left a year before entering uni and and I never heard about universities’ uniform, 20 years ago 😂 But yeah, I did hear about sport uniforms.
I have been in hanoi last year and there i met some students that wamted to talk to me because it is their homework to speak with foreigners for improving their english skills. Did you have to do it as well or is this a more modern approach?
That's how she met German boyfriend.
Hello, Ms. Uyen, will you visit Apollo Pho Hue? You still seem as lively and full of life as ever! 😊😊
My college in the US requires physical education classes as well. And they require a swim test in order to graduate. This can be challenging for international students with no access to a pool. We get students from all over. Bryn Mawr College.
I know exactly how you feel. No matter what I studied here would not be accepted in Germany so I would have to start over. I was told the universities probably wouldn't accept me because I'm older and they don't want to waste their time just for me to retire 25 years later. Which is sad because free education means people can reinvent their life and make a career and have a better retirement. But if people are being denied because they don't have all the paperwork from when they were in grade school and aren't a young age, why do they still need to pay high taxes for free school if they can't even go? It's very convoluted.
Uyen, you killed me with 10:36 haha I didn't expect you to say that right after, "It's so convenient!"
Yay Uyen uploaded!! 🥳😊😊💗💗
Love this!!❤
Regarding your hunchback short -- that's because you had to wash dishes on the little stool and lean over your entire life!!
Thank you for the tour.
I noticed the stairs in the university didn’t look great for people with disabilities. Is Vietnam inclusive? That was the thing that stood out to me the most.
OMG em cũng đang học ở TMU luôn nè
the uniform at university is so strange. it reminds me of high school instead.
Usually the uniform is for P.E class in university.
Love this ❤❤❤❤
Wow. Universities there are still like lower level schools with uniforms and compulsory sport. I would never survive if sport was mandatory and was a subject you could fail. If it was mandatory but with no failure, then it might be reasonable. Thyank you for that insight into your past. Things do move on and change, and they feel different when we return to them.
My niece is currently in Vietnam for 4 months at a private college as an exchange student
I love how you pronounce “Euro” the German way 😆 Love from 🇳🇱
well done, well done!
Uyen i just watched your video where German boyfriend was cooking you German food, the burger and the dessert boyfriend made looked really good. I was thinking maybe German boyfriend could make you pork schnitzel for a meal? It's just thin pork steak dipped in egg and coated and friend in breadcrumbs and it tastes good. When i was at university in Edinburgh my 2 German flatmates made this schnitzel for me and it was really delicious, i think you might like it.
Uniform in university is wild
Basketball is the most popular sport in the Philippines

i feel like uyen has some sort of an invisibility cloak. if i was one of those people passing by, i would at least look at the camera or towards the person speaking. or, are college students there that busy and overworked?
they are lol, some highschoolers are like that too
@@Penelope-dw9kb
lol
because who cares about her lol
@@arisu8184
i hope you didn't mean any negative connotations.
i was commenting about the way the people acted. i guess it's ideal to make a video. but if i were them i would look at the camera, and say 'mum i'm famous' or smth. but they were busy to notice anything around them. and also i guess their priority was to focus on the street, since the traffic is very tough in hanoi, as uyen has stated before.
anyways, i wrote the comment because i wanted to generate laugh-out-louds.
so, i'm happy for your 'lol'
lol
and lol
Which camera do you use for vlogging? It’s amazing ❤️
Omg high jump was my favorite in jr high. Top 2 :P
So interesting! Thank you for sharing such a personal tour with us :)
Uyen, pandemic happened so a lot of shops closed because of it.
This sounds like high school than university
500 eu per semester is not that expensive for most family nowday 😂 cost like 1000 eu per year , 10 years ago it was indeed expensive but not now day.
Did people talk to you and ask you about the filming? Did you tell them that you are a very famous content creator in Germany? :D
You can just walked into any Vietnamese universities without getting a visitor pass? 😱
In France you can also go in our university whenever you want without any pass. It is just weird if you go as a tourist but if you act as you know or are legitimate nobody will notice
i'm convinced that she has an invisibility cloak. i'm surprised nobody that passed by looked towards the camera. also, she was talking with a somewhat loud voice or at least sudden in English in this scene 1:29, and no person even cared to look her way or moved an inch.
i mean, it might be because they're busy. i've met people who don't even pay attention to you even if you've been calling their name for over a minute. but yeah. she has invisible super powers lol
Yeb, same in Germany as well 😆
Same in Germany
@@GoodMorning-b2wIt is often very noisy outside in Vietnam so people not noticing her is normal, and filming outside is also nothing strange.
Who is doing the filming with you? ❤❤
That so cool i didnt know bc i didnt born in vietnam
Ignore me if you don’t want correcting, but did you mean “wasn’t born”
@FlyingWonderGirl yea
just subscribed🥰
Having uniforms in college is actually crazy..😭
Ha, another TMU 😂It brings back a lot of memories.
Em không ngờ rằng chị uyên ngày xưa học thương mại haha
