I agree, I wish I could hear about the other mechanics that were cut from this video. Just discovered this channel and it looks like it's been 2 years since the last upload... so it's probably unlikely, but I'd love an analysis of the sequel, Little Nightmares II - The game was amazing, plus there's a 3rd one coming out THIS year!! So it'd be the perfect excuse, just saying....
Little Nightmares really grabbed me because of how it harkens back to the things we found scary as kids: fear of monsters, of being eaten, of how freaking big adults are, things coming after us in our beds... And surprise, bitch! It's all still really scary! The lack of control you mentioned probably helps fuel this sense of helplessness that's always the most frightening part of being a kid - when you realize you can't do anything.
So - I played this game twice, and the first time shows the problem with no tutorials. Right near the beginning of the game, you are dropped in a gooey pit with a bunch of black worms, and you have to escape ASAP or they will eat you. First time I played the game, I tried about 10-15 times to get past this point and just couldn't - turning the light off was a bad idea, but the light attracted the worms, jumping didn't stop the goo from slowing you down etc. I ended up quitting, and only came back about a year later when I had forgotten I had already tried to play the game. Once I got past that point, the game was super great, but that one room sucked. I still can't remember the solution to it.
This is the exact problem with tutorials of this nature. Frustrating that it made you quit... sad to think how many other people may have quit here too.
One of my favourite ones so far. I really like this format, making two series of videos is a great idea as it means you can use your qualified game designer knowledge for the more in-depth look in games for some videos and then have your gr8 or h8 videos as more of a review style. The editing in this one was flawless and the transitions and camera work was tasty sick nasty my dude. Also being a game artist myself sound and visuals are both important you sleg... just saying. Can't wait for more and longer content
This is severely underrated! I was surprised when I saw this had less than 100k views, because this really seems like one of those really popular game analysis channels. You deserve so much more dude! Keep up the amazing work!!
Hey mate! Just a word to say that as always, that's a pleasure to watch your videos :) I'm backing up the longer videos suggestion again, glad you mentionned that this time! Also, I really love the "technical" themes you go into, as for sound design or development constraints (like you did for the Prince of Persia series). That's something people don't usually delve into, and that's such a nice addition to your content. KEEP UP THE AWESOME WORK!
Hey m8 really glad your enjoying the content :D this comment means a lot to me and thanks for all the encouragement! Let’s grow this channel together 💕
Trying to make the video 10 mins for that sweet ad revenue Jk, aside from that this is one of the best small channel analysis, I swear there is so much content spun under 10 mins
Cool vid :) I find audio quite fascinating, in fact I did a talk about it in a very different context a long time back where I also mentioned horror films not being scary with the sound muted, and also suggesting the type of music we're listening to can affect the aggressiveness of our driving. Not so much horror but I found the Myst series excellent for creating atmosphere and tension with the audio in simple point and click games. If well done I think it should hit us on a subconscious level without being overly noticeable consciously if you get my drift. Hope you're keeping well :)
1000% Martin. Sound is so ingrained into our subconscious that we barely notice its effects in every day life. That is one of the many reasons why Soundesign is so difficult because you’re trying to emulate a lot of what’s happening subconsciously And also why bad Soundesign breaks our immersion so quickly. I’d love to make a deep dive episode or series on the many different aspects of sound design in the future.. wondering if anyone would be down for that 🤷♂️
Quality: Thousand sub channel Actual sub count: 400 Me: Huh? Cool, high quality vids, I can't wait for the next. You've earned my sub and I will watch your channel grow with a smile
M8 we’re growing together! Thanks for the sub and kind words my dude it means a lot to me :) share my channel around let’s boost this growth 👀 1k subs here we come...
This was the last video of the channel that I had yet to see (except Ori and the will of the wisp, because spoilers). I can't wait for the next Halloween special! Keep it up the AMAZING work, dude! Love your pedagogical skills and silly jokes
I think another way this game is so effective is how it tells its story…or rather, doesn’t…the entire game is done in a “show, don’t tell” style, making it that much more unsettling because you likely have just as much, if not LESS information than Six does about this world and how it works
Just discovered your channel and have been eating all of your videos up as fast as I can! With that said, please please PLEASE go more in-depth. Longer videos would be AWESOME!! I love everything you're doing here, and I hope it keeps growing and growing. I'm now along for the ride.
So happy you’re enjoying them Maxwell :D you should come join the discord and join the family 😁 we’re hella active over there and you can communicate with me directly! The offer is there boss man :)
I'd love to see longer and more in depth videos, I always feel like we're just getting into the juicy stuff then you wrap up soon after. More in depth discussion would be brilliant, and espeically on horror if u ask me :D
I think longer in depth videos would be awesome! Keep the reviews going as well, but do occasional case studies of certain techniques, allowing you to pull from recent reviews and show where elements of design are implemented well or not so well. That would be amazing!!
A game that really had me scared with it's atmospheric sound design is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl. It's worth having a look at that, even tho it's dated and is a pretty bad shooter, the way that it handles the first section of the game made me not want to leave the first little settlement you start the game in.
The DLC and second game, while really great, still broke the balance of fear and frustration for me, both of which being due to the enemies designed around the flashlight which had bad control against speedy foes. I was almost ready to give up on both but I resorted to literally breaking immersion by playing silently while I listened to a video to remove me from my frustration as much as I could until I cleared those sections. The second game's hard parts were more manageable the second time when I knew about the optimal enemy-avoiding routes, but man, that was bad design, especially because I think the Patients were one of the most conceptually solid setpieces in the game.
@@DesignDelve Either better control for locking the flashlight onto enemies or for walking backward (which is apparently button-controlled on some versions but not others, like Switch), or slightly less punishing speeds for the flashlight enemies. Some kind of path notation in the final Patient room would have made it better, because the challenge is cut apart by sticking the the foreground or background but I never would have figured it out. I have the utmost artistic respect for the games, but the flashlight parts were fantastic ideas that didn't feel fair in practice. I mean, it's the one tool scaled to you, so it should be the only one to offer you a modicum of confidence, but I felt like they stuck to the idea of not making you too handy and it went wrong for that case.
Completely agree. Also the depth perception is horrible in LN2. The camera angles made jumping to a platform trial and error by dying, navigating the hand corridor was way too narrow, and melee combat was horrible. I always seemed to miss by either a mile or I was too close and the school children would just grab you.
@@DesignDelve not yet. I want to but my backlog is way too long. I decided I need to actually finish Hyper light drifter after I watched your video on it and remembered how much I liked that game before that stupid cat boss ground my progress to a halt.
@@DesignDelve well, you've already done most of the soulsborne games and that's how I started watching your channel, and I can never get enough of people talking about those....ever. I don't know. So far you've already hit a bunch of games I enjoy with mechanics and such worth analyzing and I hate being that guy in the comments begging for one game or another because it's a personal fave. Just keep up the good work. It's nice seeing you on the escapist shows.
Ayy oop m8 is good to see you making the the video m8 and I think this game would be better as a HJRPG (horatio james role play game) where you play as the distinguished spooksman james of house horatio, you could engage in political skullduggery and subvert the expectations of fans until like season 6 or fuckin 7 idk i never watched game of thrones so im not sure when it went to to shit, anyway to move onto a more revenant topic this game looks ok, maybe like a solid 4/20 but only because it has a lack of zombies and I think that for a game to be a horror game it must have zombies which is why left 4 dead 2 (not the first because its old) is a good horror game is because coach can't get himself no dang durn cheebse borg and I gotta say (heeeyaaaayaaayay heyayay I say hay whats going awwwwwn) that yeah maybe I'd try this game myself next year because i could only play it upon the eve of all of the hallers. also firfst commint :0:0:0:):))

Then TH-cam recommends your video and I find you pretty much said most of what I already wrote. This is...awkward, but despite that, I was very much impressed with the quality of editing and presentation on display with this video, and think you did a great job!
