So I went to locals with a freshly built yuriko deck, checked the ban list put Emrakul in my deck thinking it was the other one that isn’t banned, was playing against one of the judges in the pod, ninjutsu’d emmy in and was told it was banned. Was so embarrassed I put it to the side and chose a new target. Everyone was in good spirits and I was getting the comments of ‘seeing Emmy ninjutsu’d in was pretty cool and funny’. We make mistakes it’s all in good fun at the end. Great and funny episode like always
I was playing a commander game some years ago and was going against a hogaak deck and the smile on his face when he tried to cast a Griselbrand just for me to tell him its band was priceless he got so sad i told him im going to loose but not to a banned card haha
Non-magic topic, but Steven's and Jon's matching black shirts looking on point, bleeding into their sweet gamer chairs and making the colored backgrounds pop.
not trying to be that guy but wanted to point out that john tapped his mox amber for mana to put luris to his hand when the mox shouldnt have tapped for any mana at all @40:49 but as always i look forward to Wednesday morning for these commander games
He also tapped it for mana @1:03:30 without having a legendary creature/planeswalker as well. Still in the middle of the episode, so there may be another time that he does it.
I went to a card shop and saw recurring nightmare. Told the guy at the shop it looked perfect for my Sefris commander deck. He said yeah it will work great. Played it at my playgroups weekly game, to find out it was banned. To this day I’m salty at that card shop. 🤣
Funniest instance of someone playing a banned card for me was when my brother tried to put in an Iona, Shield of Emeria into play with his Kaalia attack trigger.
Well the Emrakul was fun :D I had someone in our local community put a Do-It-Yourself Seraph in his deck cause he did not understand silver boarder cards....and when we talked him its not legal he was like but Transformers are legal :D was a sad day for Transformers being called out
I told my friend who started playing magic in '94 about Commander and the next time I saw him he brought a Rofellos Eldrazi deck with the banned Emrakul in it as well 😂

Somebody new to magic ended up playing the blue card it is that bounces literally everything (99% sure its Upheaval), and I told them it was banned. We agreed it could just be the one that returns all nonlands to hand instead
I once tried to cast a Trade Secrets I'd put into a new deck straight from my binder as I was hustling to get it playable. Only saw the set symbol was CMD, and never even considered it might be banned. Likely would have pretty quickly, since resolving it inevitably shows off how unfair it is in multiplayer.
Jeremy has a perfect ring on that could've been used as the Ring to indicate ringbearer. Also, as a content watcher, love the game mechanic of take opponent's turn. Brutal as a receiving player, but the "how do I best destroy this turn" is such a fun MtG puzzle.
A fun fact about Companions in Commander is that the default for Companions is that they simply come into the game from out side the game just like that. No sideboard needed. The weird exception to that is actually in tournament play where MTR 3.16 restricts "outside the game" effects to look only in the sideboard. Companions working in commander work as normal.
I bought the banned emrakul and was so happy to show my friends this awesome card I'd never seen before and with out cracking a smile or anything my friend just says thats banned you can't play it I was so sad I still have the card that was like almost 12 years ago I think
Pretty early into playing commander as a format, I had a mono-black reanimation deck led by liliana, heretical healer. Won a couple games by looping Gary with a recurring nightmare until someone pointed out there was a ban list, so I do sympathise Corey 🤣
There may have been an opening for Steven to attack Corey at the end with Aragorn's "creatures can't block" ability given he erroneously had the monarch. All in all this game was absolutely hilarious.
I know how to resolve the sneaking in a banned card issue. For one episode, everyone gets to build a deck with no ban list except Corey. Corey gets a precon
I haven't gotten that far, but extra turn spells tend to be pretty bad unless you're setting up for a win or looping them for infinite turns. That being said, Expropriate can't be looped without a Narset's Reversal. Even then, you only buy it back the one time unless you're Ghostly Flickering an Archaeomancer and a Mnemonic Wall. But now you're talking about a 5 card combo that requires damn near 20 mana to pull off
Steven should have played aragorn the uniter then played the other aragorn and the surrak and he could have gotten 2 lightning bolt triggers plus a 1/1 soldier and 2 scry 2
I made the mistake of saying "I'm glad you don't have Naya Charm to tap down my creatures" when I had lethal on an opponent in the prerelease of that set and then he read the card in hand and tapped me down and killed me. My first prerelease. Lol
I really hope the post the deck list because after seeing Jon's commander I can think of so many broken things you can do with it and I am curious to see what his list is.

Corey really needs to learn to stop saying "Sorry" when doing things to other players. Nothing feels worse than getting killed and the person keeps saying "sorry" over and over.
For the rest of the season Corey needs to put at least three copies of Cheatyface in every deck. At the end of every game he loses a point for every Cheatyface in his hand. 🤣
Honestly, for the exception of one loser who stood behind his "I bought the card, I dont care if its banned" defence, everytime at my LGS whenever someone gets cought playing banned cards its simply because they didnt know it was banned, and given what cards they usually are, and certainly compared to some of the cards that ARENT banned, most of us usually believe them.
Don't think Corey should get minus a point as he didn't play the banned card he was already in a position where him having 1 less card wouldn't have affected the game
I have a Commander deck that runs several banned cards in it (and even proxies one non-legal card from that old MTG computer game) but that deck only gets played to add a sort of goofy chaotic "Planeschase" aspect to the game which isn't for the purpose of winning. My regular playgroup is A-Ok with the deck being in games every now and then and if it ever gets played with new people, I always announce beforehand that there are banned cards in it and if they're not cool with that I have replacement cards for all of them. I wouldn't regularly play with banned/illegal cards, but, as with most things Commander, I think it's an issue that can easily be handled by an understanding playgroup that has a good Rule Zero talk beforehand.
We played a months-long tournament, reporting data over time. Semifinals had me playing an orzhov control list, and i played limited resources. We were 7 turns after it came down, and we all realized it was banned. Whoops. Had to restart the entire game as it was too far along to back up. Gg fellas

I am probably wrong here, but if you play Emrakul, the Promised End and take control of his turn, and then cast heroic intervention as your first spell, would you then not lock yourself out of targeting his creatures for the rest of that turn? Emrakul, the Promised End says you take control of that turn. Hexproof says cannot be the target of spells your opponents control. I don’t see any reason why that wouldn’t include the ones you are controlling from Emrakul, the Promised End. Just a thought, but I’m probably wrong. I was SCREAMING at my monitor that Stephen Green could've attacked Corey because he had an Aragorn and the Monarch. Corey couldn't have blocked.
