  • Part 24 of a series charting the history of West Ham United during the four and a half years of Billy Bonds' management.
The New Year starts well with a 1-0 win at Goodison Park, but the 0-0 draw with Sheffield United at The Boleyn Ground is labelled “The worst game you are likely to see in the Premiership this season.” Watford are dispatched in the cup, then an undeserved 3-1 defeat at Villa Park is followed by a 3-3 draw on the Monday Night Football and sees the first paying punters sitting in the new Bobby Moore Stand. Steve Jones scores a great goal and is retained for the cup game at Meadow Lane where he spares Miklosko’s blushes with an equaliser. Lee Chapman is turning into an awkward bundle of limbs. He is the target of the fans’ frustration in the replay as they sing “We want Chapman off the pitch!” Of course Chapman scores the winner in extra time, but sarcastic applause to the fans and post-match comments mean that his nomination for Hammer of the Year is permanently cancelled. He scores the winner again in the fifth round at Kidderminster but remains the focal point for the fans’ frustration.

How dare Chapman sarcastically applaud the ever so lovable West Ham fans after scoring a goal.

I remember getting up about 5am for the Man City game, then we go back on the coaches to Upton Park just after 10pm, my mate run we home to grab a things and then its was back to the ground and I camped out all night to get tickets for the Kidderminster game, me and about 50 others. I was sat there on my fishing box, with a sleeping and a plastic rain mac in the middle of February. About 6:30am one of the stewards arrived and gave up a raffle ticket, so we could go home, I had a shower and grabbed some breakfast and then walked back to the ground just before 9am. I was shocked see the size of the queue but I had me raffle ticket and as I got to the gate and was let in. I could feel the eyes on me as I walked to the front to a section reserved for those with the raffle tickets and those that had camped out the night before as we saw each other arrive we just had these stupid little smirks on our faces realising the night before was called for and I admit the smug feeling I got as I walked out of the gate with me and my mates tickets to a feeling that hasn’t been replicated to many times since, I’m not sure if that was my fault or West Ham’s!

I was one of those queueing up at silly o’clock for a Kidderminster ticket and I remember being somewhere behind the goal when Chapman scored. Still, I had a better view there than the one I had at Notts County. There was a huge post directly in front of my seat at Meadow Lane and I had to try and peer around either side of the blasted thing 😂

Anyone that was at Villa Park in January will never forget the actions of the West Midlands Police. I got hit over the head with a baton for being in the wrong place at the wrong time after the match. Thank you to the Hammers fans that helped me on the journey home, golden hearted - 15 years-old and really badly shaken up. Wish there were mobiles in those days. Also, I NEVER thought Chapman was sarcastically applauding the fans after the Notts County goal but he used the Ince barracking as something along the lines of "10% of fans here are intent on behaving like morons" What bollocks, Lee. If you'd have put in more effort there wouldn't have been a problem between you and the fans! 😡

Today’s supporters should watch this and realise what we have at the moment is light years away from some of the dross we were served up during this period.

I agree. Nowadays, some West Ham fans whine about Moyes, about the board, about the London Stadium, ....but look at these videos. West Ham spent 20 -30 years bouncing around between the top two flights or skirting with relegation but now are regular top 8 finishers, going deep into Europe three years in succession and actually winning a trophy. Be careful what you wish for.
