    Just ordered a RS-97 thanks to this video. I originally passed because the RS-97 seemed to be a poor mans PSP, but now I can hack a new OS and try out Quake, Heretic and Doom on it makes it well worth it for me, I hope you get a chance to put up some gameplay videos !

    RetrOrob try giving us a video on NEXT os which is the only cfw available today or provide a download for that OS you are showing from 1:36 to 10:28.
    GMU on the lastest next OS does not allow you to navigate to the roms partition or external sd so you can not play music ......Most the included games did not load or would hard lock the system and i had to pull the battery to turn off the system....can not turn the system off with the power button on NEXT OS....... I have yet to find file navigation or overclocking for emulators.

    Nice to see you get around to this.
    Working though this now and don't see you mention in the Description that OpenDingux is a linux.

    Thanks for the update. I'm excited to get mine. I love my GPD XD but I find it's not quite as pocketable as I'd like for quick on-the-go gaming breaks. The form factor of this device seems perfect for that.
    Have you found any issues using the buttons for prolonged periods of time? And how's the battery life with the custom firmware?

    • @thewiirocks
      @thewiirocks 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Buttons are fine. No signs of wear after months of abuse. Battery is 2.5 - 3 hours. If you're going to be doing extended gaming sessions, bring an external battery pack.

      I would not rule out more RS-97. It's still on my "Keep" pile (I use the white one now though). There has been a number of firmware updates to the '97 since my little set of videos, but I really have not had the time to change it up.

      @@Retr0Rob I love my RS97. I have the same model you did in the video but it is motherboard revision 3.0 with a 60hz screen. Hey Rob, there is a cool blue anniversary edition out there. Do you also know about the Rg350 and new stuff? If not the obscure handhelds site has the skinny on that stuff as well as jutleys. Thank you for taking the time to respond to me. Your great.

    • @True2TheBlueYoViGang
      @True2TheBlueYoViGang 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tembadau hi. Mines came in the mail. After thinking about it I decided to keep it stock. My only complaint is that GBA emulation has like a 1 second audio delay. Other than that all stock emulators work pretty well. The music player and such is terrible. It looks like a psp player but its far worse. I won't bother making it a mp3 player. I use my phone with bluetooth headphones for that. I bought a 32gb tf card for it. I like it so I kept it stock. I decided it was good enough so I didn't want to deal with customizing it. Only GBA has an audio problem. :)
      Ah let me say this when you connect the av cables it gets ugly. It doesn't play well on a tv. To much frame skipping. The handheld itself has an ok frame rate. It gets nasty when you connect it to a tv. It's not perfect but it's good enough.

    • @Retr0Rob

      Fairly sure it is a dingoo variant as well. I Know the mini arcade (RS-07) uses it as it can execute some dingux ports. I could be wrong on that though

  • @myembereffect
    @myembereffect 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you overclock it, everything runs WAYYY better. PS1 plays resident evil or any prerendered background type game perfectly. Also, the beta version on the mega site renders better and faster than the one OOB with the disk image you used. Same with snes, gba, and sega.

      Try some different ROM sets. These can be kind of finicky about what they use. Also try zipped ROMs vs rar if they are .rar'd

    Is the RS-97 better than the Odroid Go?

    • @a.j.2796
      @a.j.2796 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can compare the specs using the links below. The Odroid GO is cheaper but obviously there's some assembly required. On paper the rs-97 seems to have the faster processor, but I'm not sure how they compare practically. The odroid go has wifi and bluetooth if that matters to you, it doesn't have a 3.5mm port so your options are to either mod one in or use bluetooth headphones. The build quality of the odroid go looks better to me than the rs-97 but of course you have to assemble the odroid go yourself so part of that is going to have to do with your skills. The rs-97 has 8 buttons and a D-pad: 4 face buttons, start, select, L and R shoulder buttons, while the odroid go only has 2 face buttons , start, and select. I think you may be able to use a bluetooth controller with the odroid go but I haven't seen any examples of it. On the odroid go wiki they only show it emulating GBC, NES, and SMS systems, but it runs Retropie so I don't see why you couldn't run other emulators on it and use a bluetooth controller but I couldn't tell you what emulators are usable on the system. The odroid go has a 10 pin GPIO expansion port on it so you could use it with some additional modules or program it to control some maker projects.

      Andrew S great comparison, I was wondering about this as well as I’d love to pick up one of the two to basically live in my purse for gaming on the go lol. Thanks!

    • @a.j.2796
      @a.j.2796 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Kat. I'm quite jealous of your handheld collection. You might also check out the Gameshell, it has a better cpu, a GB style form factor, and is modular so you can add more buttons to it. And you might check out the Freeplay CM3 which is essentially a Raspberrry Pi 3 in a modified GBA case. This will easily give you the most emulation power in a handheld form factor (outside of a GPD XD+). You could even dock this machine with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse and use a full linux arm distro for your everyday computing needs.

    • @kat.
      @kat. 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew S too kind! I’d really love a Freeplay but the cost is a bit up there for me personally. Even more so if I purchase one pre-built as I’m just learning about these assembly kits myself. Also good to know about being able to dock it for sure, had no idea 👍🏼

    • @ageary07
      @ageary07 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got an odroid - its great kit for learning a bit of electronics, and its build quality is really fantastic for something you put together yourself. However its not a great emulation machine at all - its a ESP32 chip running at 200mhz, most people say the master system is the highest spec machine it will emulation. Even with GBC games there are frame skips as the panel only works at 30 fps. Its a nice machine and I think Rob should definitely review it, but I think as an actual gaming machine its not great.
