You can also shake up tree/shrub branches to see what falls out or pick up rocks to look on the bottom! Especially if fishing in the winter when spider webs are scarce or if you don't have the screening equipment they have in this video.
I can't thank you enough for your beginner videos. Years ago my grandfather and I were going to learn how to fly fish and go trout fishing in Northern California where we live. Long story short my grandfather got sick and passed away before we had the chance, but now I have a 7 year old grandson and after watching all of your videos I got us each #5 pre-setup combo rods and next weekend we'll all be at Lake Davis hopefully catching our first fly rod trout, but we'll definitely be making grandfather/grandson memories and one old mean Marine grandfather smile in heaven. Again thank you very much and keep up the great work.
I just wanted to give a HUGE THANKS to Katie at Mad River. I reached out to these guys through the comments and was pointing in the direction to contact the Mad River store because I’m new to fly fishing. So I called told and had the pleasure to talk with Katie I had explained to her that I live on the salmon river in upstate New York and want to fish for stealheads she explained to me what I needed and gave me the basics and never tried to over sale me products . 15mins of talking to her and now I have a tracking number to my new gear. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS OUT OF THIS WORLD DEFINITELY 5 stars 🌟. I recommend to check these guys out. From TH-cam to talking on the phone hands down the best experience I have ever had with dealing with people in the outdoors industry. Thank you so much Katie.
This video is immediately my favorite. Last September I visited your shop, on our way from NY to Dayton. I brought along my gear, just in case I had a little extra time to wet a fly. The first place I stepped into the water, is the place you both sampled the river. I recognized it immediately. I walked up the river a few hundred yards, then up that little side stream a ways. Unfortunately, I had no luck that day, but it is always nice to be on the stream. Thanks again for all you do. Great video.
Good to see you both out and on the water. I thought Brian was just the pretty face making the videos(lol,, are you about done with the one on entomology? ). Katie I made my first gurgler after watching your video. Your a good teacher.
What a beautiful stream, oh and don’t forget to tell us about the presentation method your using it looked like across and down with a little swing. Having grown up in sw Ohio in the seventies can remember when a lot of these streams were heavily polluted it seems like they’re recovering nicely.
Has anyone at Mad River Outfitters ever fished Clear Creek Metroparks in Ohio for trout? If not you should defently check it out, its a fun little stream to wade and fish.
I’m new to fly fishing. I just moved up to salmon river in Pulaski NY. I’m really big into the outdoors and love the challenges it throws at me. I’m not challenged anymore so now I’m on to fly fishing. I’m looking for the right set up for smaller trout 3lbs and under. How long of a rod and what weight and what real. I need some help. I’m learning everything from your channel.
Brian - any chance you can show a foto or still shot of the tackle you used? You described it but for a newby like me I'd appreciate seeing what that lure combo looks like. Thx!
Interesting technique, I usually fish nymph on point and two spiders on the droppers or 3 spiders. I've never really fished them tied I guess NZ style - with indicator to nymph and then off the barb of the heavier nymph? Nice idea on the floatant, never thought of that. One thing I've been thinking is, adding some CDC to the spider hackle or using it as a hackle, not sure if it would make much difference...
Started with a 5WT 8.5' Orvis Encounter to see if I liked fly fishing. I love it. I've caught and released every trout (and char) species in West Virginia so far this year except the Tiger trout hybrid... but I don't look for stocked trout so not sure when I'll luck into one. So, I think it's already time to upgrade. QUESTION.... I want to get a small light weight for small mountain streams in pursuit of natives and wilds. What WT / length would you recommend? I see some people going with 6ft and some going with like 10ft. I also thought I might want to get something really slow and buttery, but a friend said he likes his little rods whipy and fast. He started fishing a 13' Euro Nymphing setup and that got me intrigued also. Too many options out there.
I caught my first tiger trout last year out of the Animas in Durango randomly . Nice 14 inch fish but was weird because they don't stock them here. I talked to some local guides at the fly shop and all they can figure is someone stocked some on private water downstream and he made it up🤷♂️ made my season though😂
You'll have to check with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for that info. ohiodnr.gov/wps/portal/gov/odnr/discover-and-learn/safety-conservation/about-ODNR/wildlife
Wait! What was that little tip Brian gave to Katie near the end of the video, on "winding up" her roll cast? Unfortunately, I'm forced to roll cast a lot where I fish and am always trying to improve it. I've learned everything I know from Brian watching these videos. Is there a tip they can share on improving the roll cast?
Good video Brian, my only suggestion is that Katie is a lot easier to look at than you are, she needs more camera time. The spider web idea is a really god one. Keep the good things coming.
Where do I find a seine net that you used to collect samples. I have seen small ones that you can carry around when fishing. Nice video. Hope to see more in the future. As always you and your staff do a great job. Keith Haungs Northern Kentucky Fly Fishers

Katie's awesome. More Katie. And more tying with Katie. Also awesome insight about the floatant powder used in that application. 👍
Thanks for watching. More Katie on the way. Stay tuned.
Thank you Katie for rowing so Brian could fish the front! Thanks both of you for your time in this video. I always learn from y’all. Loving it!
Thanks for watching. We appreciate it.
Looking in spider webs?! This man's a genius 😂 I would have gone my whole life without ever doing that..
Always check them.

Best video yet m8. You taught me a bunch of things that nobody else is teaching me. Bring us more about the bugs.... Thank you for this.

Good video. Last time I fished the Mad (near Urbana) I thought I had the brown of a lifetime on; turned out it was a 16 inch LMB. 🤷♂️

What size was that soft tackle pheasant tail jig??
You’d have to check with Brian directly on that. We don’t have that info here. He can be reached via email or phone through the shop. Thanks.
So I live in this area and I’m just getting into fly fishing, what should I throw and what are some tips to help me?
Please contact the folks at the shop directly and they will be happy to help. Best to call them but you can send an e-mail as well. Thanks.
I am going to go on a trip to the Mad river and I was wondering if you would recommend any specific flies for around the winter season?

I'm going to Ohio next July for a few weeks. What permits do I need from fish and game as a Irish citizen to fly fish in the rivers?
