That was absolutely fascinating, and a two for the price of one 😀 Thank you.

Black walnut is a wood I tend to ignore in the woods when I am needing firewood.....but if one is in the way when I go cutting, it becomes firewood. I burns well, just a lot of ash. Of course I am lucky enough to have neighbors that have 100 acres or so, with a lot black locust......so that is my preferred choice when harvesting.

I tend to prefer oak because it burns slower. I don't need a hot fire because I can actually overheat my house with this system. I like oak because it doesn't burn so hot - it burns for a long time which means more time between feeding the furnace. However, considering the "family farm" is 99% walnut planted like corn in rows, I tend to have more walnut than anything else.

    That’s a good solution!

Fascinating. When you stoke up the furnace how long can you leave it before it needs fed again?

It depends more on the log. A bunch of small logs will burn hot and fast. I like to have some that are barely able to fit through that little door. Those ones don't burn so hot, but last much longer before I need to feed it again. Probably on average I need to put something in there every 1.5-2 hours.

If there was a way to cool your house with walnut in the summer, you'd have it made!

Where did you get the name Gunflint Design? Anything to do with the Gunflint Trail the starts in Grand Marais?
Haha, as I watched further into the video you pulled out your flashlight and I said, "Is the the rechargeable streamlight mcrostream, the best EDC flashlight?" Waiting for the only improvement needed is for it to charge with USB-C.

That is where I got the name. I'm in southern Minnesota, but the Gunflint Trail was an important place to me growing up. So when it came time to name the business it just made sense.
I'm glad I'm not the only own who appreciates the best little flashlight out there. Anyone who says their phone is a flashlight is really missing out.

I do not know for a fact, but I had someone tell me at one time that burning black walnut releases some kind of toxic gases? Don't know,

My friend, get a harness for when you go up on your roof. It's really easy to fall off one and get injured badly enough to ruin your day up to ruining your life when a reasonably priced piece of safety gear can keep that chance way down. One missed step is all it takes. I sold life and accident insurance for a year and also sat on safety committees at multiple employers over my career. Falls from height were the worst and most preventable injuries I saw. Do it for your family.
And get some life insurance while you're young, healthy, and really cheap to insure.
