- Few films have earned the dreaded NC-17 rating, but how far is too far? For these films, the line between artistry and exploitation is a thin one.

Well... John Singleton once said (I'm paraphrasing) in movies violence and murder are okay, but when you include (even tasteful) sex scenes the rating hits the ceiling. Or in other words: Killing people is accepted everyday life in movies but sex is evil.
That (very american) bigotry is kinda sad I think.
Phwoooooar.......that's deep, Stefan.
It can still be artistry and not "exploitation" even if it gets an NC-17. And that's true even if topics like assault or incest are depicted. Art isn't necessarily supposed to be pretty or comforting.
YEAH- like SHOWGIRLS🤓
Absolutely true although I would add sometimes the art completely evades me and also the reverse is also true exploitation dressed up as art is still exploitation. I guess we all decide for ourselves where a film fits on that scale.
I worked at theaters showing Henry and June and Showgirls. With Henry and June, we really had to card people and we had it playing in several auditoriums during its run. Showgirls only had 1 showing and we had it for a week. Have both in my collection and I treasure it. Thanks for showing it some love.
Seriously props to this channel for giving the info title info up front!
I've seen Requiem once, and never again.
The 1978 horror masterpiece Dawn of the Dead almost got an X-Rating for violence... until the producers decided to release it unrated!
When "Clockwork Orange" was first released it got an X. As a result several news papers wouldn't carry ads for the film. After the removal of less than a minute's worth of footage (!) it got an R, allowing certain papers to print the ads.
Angel Heart has a similar story...
When the zombies pull the head off that one guy and rip the body apart of the other is pretty gruesome. I'd say worthy of an X-rating.
Agree with the comments about what a tough watch Requiem for a Dream is, but I'd like to add that I think Ellen Burstyn's performance in that movie is cinema's greatest acting accomplishment.
Requiem for a Dream is fantastic. Ellen Burstyn should of won the Oscar for it.
I'VE ONLY SEEN REQUIEM OF A DREAM ONCE 22 YEARS AGO AND I STILL REMEMBER MOST OF IT ONE OF THE MOST DEPRESSING MOVIES I HAVE EVER SEEN
Watched it once and that was enough for a lifetime.
It takes you into darkness of a world you don’t know. 😅
I luv what you said about Requiem for A Dream...and that's FoSho... One of my favorite films.
I'd add the 1995 movie 'Kids' to this list.
Why? What's in it?
Please do not watch Requiem for a Dream if you aren't in a good headspace. Its the only movie I have to self-assess to make sure I'm okay enough to watch.
No word of a lie I went into it blind when it came out. My entire thought process was "oh, Jennifer Connelly is in this, I'm a fan". An hour and 40 minutes later I came out feeling like I'd been run over.
that movie was a one and done for me. it was an excellent film that i will never watch again.
I was definitely not in a good headspace when i watched it, and I'm sure i'll never watch it again.
@@jenng7389 I can agree with that, just too depressing and it ends with no hope.
Watch it while taking LSD or shrooms!
I was about to say that “Requiem for a Dream” wasn’t NC-17, but evidently, the version most people have seen is a very slightly edited R-rated cut.
"azz to azz" 😂
It's a stupid scene
@@stellviahohenheim Seems like a pretty logical progression of Marion’s arc to me.
There was a sexual assault scene that was edited out. During the end, the actor is turning bread dough, and crying. It was supposed to be part of the montage towards the end.
Sorry for the play on words.
You have the DVD?
I do not know the name of the movie, but the scene lives in my brain rent free forever: I was a kid, maybe 9 or 10 and my parents were watching this movie about a Mexican girl. She got graped by her uncle or her dads friend. I wish I knew the movie. Watching it again might help me heal.
Requiem for a dream produced wonderful music score, the main song was frequently used in trailers for movies
As much as ‘Requiem for a Dream’ messed me up, I thought it was a great movie. Life never ends, and instead of finishing this movie on a positive note, they ended it on a bad one. It was refreshing in a way.
And Jennifer Connelly being my favourite actress, I bought it on DVD having never seen it before. That was a rude awakening.
I'm surprised that the other Lars Von Trier favorite" Anti Christ " wasn't included as well as Penthouse " Caligula."
Good catch
Matthew McCaughey in Killer Joe with the fried chicken blew my mind when I first seen it
Could never see KFC quite the same way after watching that scene. KFC-17
Depicting someone who is real as a rapist to be artistic is morrally disgusting and the Kennedys should sue.
It's possible that there is already enough factual information out there (the affair and lots of details that were known, documented yet not reported) that it wasn't worth bringing it up in court - under oath to validate it. I know quite a bit is out there already. It was easier to let a movie that had such a rating and wouldn't be seen by the masses anyway, die a slow quiet death than give it documentation - " We now know that points A through M are verified and true, but points N, Q, W and Z aren't untrue, they just can't be verified. I had no idea that point G ever happened... and point H and L? I never dreamed that was actually true! Now we know." Then people have more fact than just suspicion to go on in the never ending mystery.
Remember, there are conspiracies that envolve the Kennedy hand being behind her death. There's Chappaquiddick, the JFK and Bobby's end. There are hundreds of surrounding the family in general. Some may be true, most probably arent.
True or not, people believe some of the theories in their bones. Since we don't and will likely never know what actually happened with the Mayilyn/JFK stuff, pouring gasoline on that fire wouldn't accomplish anymore than the uproar about it not being factual already did.
The reporting that did happen most likely caused more people to buy a ticket than would have otherwise. It just made it more salacious. "There is something in it that the family obviously doesn't want us to see! I'm going to watch it now." Best to cut their losses.
Did I bludgeon this deceased Equus caballus sufficiently? 🤔
@@vinceinhouston4338 You: "We don't know that he didn't do it, therefore slander is okay! Let's just call him a rapist to the whole world with no evidence for it." That's downright evil.
@@BryceShamwow More like Me: The family decided to cut their losses and not dignify the claims after a bunch of people already played the liar, liar pants on fire card.
Made my nips hard.
I think we all know that anything set within the realms of possibility based on history is likely to be taken too seriously. Some hope (like I do, but learned all are bullshit) that they can enjoy a film while learning history in a way they can digest easily. Making something up for "artistic liberties" is very irresponsible of writers and directors when it comes to depictions of real people. Abraham Lincoln killing vampires is one thing, Kennedy raping Monroe without any known evidence of it is crossing a line somewhere.
I was unable to watch Requiem a second time ... maybe one day I will - such a masterpiece but also so depressing and disturbing on so many levels.
The movie Shame predicted the future of our bleak world.
Lust Caution, In The Realm of The Senses, Bent, Crash, and Young Adam should be included
I thought NC-17 was a lower rated score than “R.”
Love all these films, and even love genres that are black and white and silent. I try and appreciate great story telling of all ages.
I love what you do
There are many that I'm super suprised aren't on this list.
Any of the I Spit On Your Grave movies
The Accused...powerful movie, but that bar scene is a hard watch.
Blonde is a fictional book highly disrespectful
Irreversible (2002)
The War Zone (1999)
And nearly all of the scenes in Blue is the Warmest Colour
Oh yeah, The War Zone is a good movie but very messed up.
‘requiem for a dream’ was an awesome movie but its impact on me was both massive and depressing. i kept looking for the smallest thread of light at the end of the tunnel. sadly, it does not exist.
The only problem making nakedness "controversial", especially in certain regions of the world, are ratings boards dictating what's "acceptable". American cinema has particular restrictions for visibility but still allows more opposed to some and nothing elsewhere. But it's still possible to have certain amounts of nudity even in PG-13 films, which otherwise would've received alternate ratings, depending on context, focus and length. In example, unless it's purposely, the human buttocks is safeguarded from censorship more than other body parts simply because it's somehow lesser offensive. But it becomes another debate and challenge about what's acceptable or offensive with these ratings if it's relentless with actual sexuality.
I just watched "Showgirls" a couple of days ago, I love Paul Verhoeven movies, Robocop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers, he is the master of satire and commentary disguised as blockbuster movies; and I think the same was for "Showgirls", while steppeing out of what he is known for, the movie is a critique on the entertaiment industry and the explotation of women in said industry, so to make his point across he made it a Sexploitation movie, what's funny is when the movie came out everything that was about Nomi's story and how she slowly gets corrupted more and more to get what she wants, and how everyone around her is more rotten the higher she gets, and how Vegas in this movie really honors the name of "Sin City", and on top that is beautifully shot, really the city itself becomes another character; all of these was pushed aside by the critics and the audience because all they could see was the sex, which proofs the movie's point, since sex is all the public wants to see, whether to enjoy it or criticized it, then that is the what the industry will sell, positive or negative attention the audience give it by loads to this movie for the same reasons they think it's shouldn't get any.
Requiem was a one-and-done viewing for me. I still bought and own the DVD, but I doubt I'll ever watch it again. Not because I thought it a bad movie, just... hit too close to home. A few friends (well, former friends) of mine went through a scenario very similar. Obviously not as dramatic as what's in the movie, but it was close enough.
"Pleasure" the uncut version was pulled off Showtime. The ratings were confusing.
Surprised Anti-christ wasn't in here.
Killer Joe--great movie btw--is NC-17 because of the bloody beatdown Emile Hirshe gets. Ouch
YES! Someone says why it really got that rating! Even without the Chicken leg scene, it would still get an NC-17! Definitely my all time favourite movie
What is the first movie
Requiem is a great one 🕐❤
Interesting about JFK, considering the several interviews by Mr. Mike Wallace on CBS' 60 Minutes.
Requiem is a really good movie, but I could only watch it once. Irreversible is another one timer. The rape scene is beyond brutal. I Spit on your Grave, the original one from the 70's has some brutal scenes also.
10:48 i beg to differ, for me, i actually ended up(the first time i watched it) turning it off during the mom's emotional breakdown in her living room. I found it incredibly difficult to deal with at the time I watched it. However I do agree, the entire movie is incredibly disturbing, and one I only watched 1 more time just to get through it as it is a well known movie so I wanted to at least complete it once.
Seth Rogan even understanding what a boundary is would be impressive.
A perfect Ending has some really hot scenes too.
9 1/2 weeks, Realm of the Senses, Monsters Ball, earlier... Last Tango in Paris.
wow i got here way to early its a little embarrassing
"Head bobbing" caused an NC-17? I've seen worse then that on regular TV. The show "Aquarius" had that and WAY more graphic scenes. It was on NBC in 2015. I guess times just change..
Everyone here is for "research"
technically yes as I have been studying movie ratings, bans, cuts, etc for 30 + years :)
There should be NO ROOM FOR CREATIVE LIBERTIES when it's based on real people.
Requiem For A Dream is a brilliant film but can only be watched rarely.
Blonde has not only destroyed Marilyn’s image and legacy, but ruined and canceled Ana’s career. Definitely the worst biopic movie ever.
I don't think it destroyed her career but it's a bad movie.
Do you really wanna know how I got these calluses on my hand ✋️?
They should have shown the jfk d sk scene properly
I have seen the "Requiem for a Dream", and I must say that there wasn't a single scene where I would laugh. It was very disturbing and I have to say I had to watch another film after that in order to even be able to sleep. Not sure if I'm going to watch that film again, probably not. But I'd recommend that film to anyone who might think of getting their hands on drugs. It serves as a great anti-ad to drugs.
100%. Couldn't watch again but made me scared of being addicted to anything for life.
No mention of Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut? 🤔
It's pretty mild, it was just a big deal because it was Nicole Kidman.
Can You Guys Do Forgotten Debut Programming From well known networks ????
Romance 1999 on Tubi has more nudity and graphic stuff than any of this.
Very true.
That scene with Mathew and the chicken leg totally horrified me and havent been able to watch movies with him since then. Terrible
Really? Well, everyone’s different I guess. I didn’t mind that scene except for finding it unnecessarily dull. I thought they were trying to hard to make Joe a nut bag, you know?
The director of that trash heap Blonde is damn lucky Caroline Kennedy is a private person.
Anyone else would have sued him into a tent on Skid Row for that film
That film was based on a fictional book of Monroe. I haven't read the book but the movie is smear job.
Requiem is still a great movie but you'll only wanna watch it once.
i have a lot of googling to do
I guess "Below Her Mouth" and The Brown Bunny" didn't make the list because neither was submitted for a rating.
Blonde is not the story of Marilyn monroe, however it is an entertaining movie at best !
Wasn't Monroe doing both Kennedy brothers?
It’s a conspiracy. She never had a three way with them.
We know she had a thing with JFK and there is some strong proof to say she was also having a thing with RFK. She wanted to go public and most likely taken out by the government.
As adults we do need these types of movies because you get real characters amd great acting. It's a part of the tribal, ancient Human soul to need to see what we are capable of from extreme violence to extreme sexual acts. Somewhere in between is where most of us have our heads at 😂
It needs to go further. I’m not watching looper trash.
I was today years old when I found out an R rating isn't the highest rating...
It's wild to me that the US has 17 as the age for explicit content to be ok where other countries such as the UK have 18, which also happens to be the legal drinking age (among a multitude of other 'adult' rights) whereas the US has 21 for drinking, LITERALLY the stand-alone country with the highest age limit. I just don't get it. Police spending time and resources "busting" 19, 20-year olds (who can vote, go to war, etc.) for drinking privately is simply madness.
Probably due to the fact, that most other countries in the west have different standards to determin 'explicit'! Though the US presents a variety of standards, which gets people upset about an erect nipple and simple , natural nudity, while completely fine with drag queen story times in eelementary school.
US of Hypocrisy is the second name of that country.
You guys missed two movies. “Kids” and “The pillow Book”. Cheers
“Salo” Pasolini’s film is at the Top of my List… of the most disgusting portrayal of ‘sex’ and ‘violence’ but I think of it as more a “documentary” - while it’s supposed to condemn “Fascism” it more documents, “communism” “anabaptism” the Inquisition or any moment in History where civilization breaks down and the animalistic nature of Hedonism is allowed to reign until humans are repelled and STOP… like any battle… or war.
365 Days should have been NC 17. There is one scene you wonder how the act is not real..
You know you're a freak when you get excited about a vid like this, but realize that you've already seen ALL the movies on the list before 😂 Except the gay one. Not that one lol
I wouldn't mind this kind of rating if it were purely advisory. I don't find any of it shocking or offensive.
No Irreversible?
Blonde is one of the worst, most repugnant & exploitative films I’ve ever seen. The director basically misled Anna de Armas into making his own personal porno rather than a compelling look at who Marilyn Monroe actually was. Rather than show the multifaceted person she was: a confident & funny sex icon who had a dark past & some personal demons, he chose to solely focus on sex scene after sex scene 💀 Hope that director never works again.
nymphomania sucks the storytelling is horrible and the philosophy the main character tries to sell you as their state of thinking makes no sense whatsoever.
This sounds like a nymphomaniac trying to cover their tracks. You're not fooling anyone
@@rjdub8455maybe a necropheliac.
That's the Sasha Grey one right? Yeah that movie blows
The movie I watched streaming was just boring.
Don’t worry Looper will never have to make this video again as Hollywood has removed all romance between men and women all together and sex scenes all together from any new film. What we got is all there will be until that echo chamber is torn down.
Haha, I can't stop laughing! Legendary humor! 😂 👄👄👄🍆🍆🍆
I couldn't believe why Stanley Kubrick's last movie , Eyes Wide Shut , got an NC-17 rating . It got an NC-17 because of about 5-7 seconds of some guy's hips thrusting in simulated sex acts at the private party .
Oh America, Movies can freely show people getting killed in whatever gruesome manners, but dear God to whoever does nudes
It's weird, John Wick kills 87 people in a movie and that is cool but liberals in America are offended by nudity or politically incorrect jokes.
So why was Y Tu Mama, Tambien only rated R?
Caligula?
Not sure you understand the meaning of assault.
Most people don’t but they accuse anyway
Free aah comments!
1:34 it might be one of the most disturbing sexual acts ever to be put on screen
Spartacus:
Am I a joke to you?
anyone see Simpsons on Sunday???? homer gets obsessed with tipping and busts a wad on moe
The US can’t define woman, you expect common sense when defining adult?
Blue is close to a porn film I ever watched. The 1st time I knew anything about it, was when I watched a clip on porn hub. After seeing some scissoring, I went to watch the full film.
The rape scene in Showgirls was the movie's low point, but the rest of it was kind of funny. A nudie soap opera.
Blonde was just a bad movie that tried to hard to be to "artistic".
Blonde didn't offend me or anything, but it was just a bad movie that made everyone miserable and it's weird that they made JFK do that without any kind of proof. Poor Things had far more useless sex scenes and nudity compared to most movies on this list but that got an R rating because it has A listers and comes off pretentious.
USA is a joke in some ways with such
Hypocrisy....NC 17 because some scenes have too much sex?
But agr if consent in many states is as Young as 13? And the avg agr of consent is what? 15? Ridiculous
Consent age Laws need to be revisec and raised to at Least 17, should be 18
It’s never to far push the limits as far as you can go
And even further
That’s why we have the 1st amendment
Puritanical rubbish
...given who JFK was...there WOULDN'T have been a record of any assault if it happened
boooooooooooooooooooooring
James Cameron's "Titanic" NEEDS to be on this list. Pure smut.
Wtf is NC17?
And who the fuck cares 😂
How dare a movie imitate life...*sigh
JFK made Bill Clinton look like a choir boy.
I don't know about that.
Naked guys is definitely pornographic and should be shunned. Naked chicks is art and should be celebrated.
Attempting to shame directors for featuring naked chicks is horrific and anyone doing so should be ignored by the masses.
Yes chicks are art
