I have a 1984 DT8 with less than 30 hours total use. It has only been in fresh water and always stored inside. Decided that at 36 years old it deserved a new impeller. This video gave me the excellent feeling of knowing what i am doing BEFORE I started on the project. Thanks for an excellent and easy to follow video.

Thanks James for taking the time to film this impeller replacement. It’s taken the mystery right out of the repair.

I'm changing the impeller in a 5 hp since the water flow is intermittent, and this helped a lot! Thank you!

Also note a tiny little hole at the water pump housing, at the stub which connects the pump to the water tube. Thru this hole some water is sprayed on top of the housing where the driveshaft seals are located. If this hole is blocked and the seals are worn, pressurized exhaust finds its way in the pump causing bubbles and poor water circulation.

For some reason the sea weed or fishing line tangled around the prop and lower housing drives me up the wall like nails on a chalk board. I like your bench top lower unit stand.

Is this a long or a short shaft model. Did they make a long shaft 4HP?

This question isn’t water pump related but what oil weight can I use for my lower unit for my DT4.

I have an 83 Suzuki DT3.5, shift linkage loose forward and rear bolts undone but the foot won't come loose, any ideas?

Lot if times the drive shaft gets gumed up and stuck in the bottom of the engine block. Give the lower unit a few wacks with a mallet downwards. Can also try tying a rope to the lower unit, hang some weights from it and then lightly tapping the sides of the lower unit with a metal hammer

Just replaced the impeller in my dt6, now it's just blowing air out or the ejection port on the bottom of the motor. Any ideas on why?

    • @blimited9053

@@markkzzz No man.. It would be too easy... The problem with this engine is exost gas preassure which overcome water preass.. Motor most not be deep in the water and what I did is drilling new holes for exost and it work perfectly now.. :)

This is really a bad video for anyone who wants to try changing a water pump impeller on their own for the first time.
First - You tore off the forward/reverse linkage access cover. Maybe You made a mistake and did that the first time you pulled your lower unit, but that cover is designed to stay on the motor, and you open it from the rounded side and then pivot it out of the way.
Second - You put the woodruff key in backwards. Anyone watching this, and putting the key in like you did, will distort the impeller, and probably gouge the pump housing requiring an entire replacement. NOTE: as far as checking the orientation of the impeller, that was at best a very vague statement. The key slot on the impeller is cut so that the impeller can only go on the right way. The only orientation would be getting the keyway lined up with that woodruff key you put in upside down.
Third - You left out the most difficult part of this change, and a couple of hints or queues to save some grief when reconnecting the gear shift linkage. If you don't mark the shaft or at least get a picture or measurement of how the shafts align you might not have reverse or forward without multiple adjustments.
Also - it might help if you let people know that you might have to rock the prop back and forth, if the unit doesn't want to go back together. The spline at the top of the shaft has to align with the motor spline, for the lower unit to come together completely.
Thanks for your video. I almost ripped off my linkage adjustment cover before realizing I was trying to remove it from the wrong side.
I hope nobody actually put the woodruff key in the way you showed it in your video.
