Thanks Techno Dad for the video. You just saved me $800 because I was planning to buy the UDP-205 but after your explaining the differences to the UDP-203 I really dont need the UDP-205. Thanks again Techno Dad.
Were you really gonna spend all that money? I said I get tvs, but do we have to spend all this money on a freakn 4k DVD player? Don't plenty of them for $100-200 bucks do just as good job? I mean nobody says why did you buy a flagship samsung or OLED etc.. Tvs, cars, Bose headphones, but a DVD player.. when we threw out VHS tapes, then DVD players, and now chuck HDblueray diss iin trash? Aren't ppl going digital movies, like music? How many ppl buy albums? It's all downloadable. And movies are still priced like standard definition shitty movies. Upwards towards $30 bucks. They'll be in 7/11 for 3 bucks in a few yrs like everything else.
I am running the 205 into my preamp with the balanced connectors and like my old balanced Oppo it's incredible. I just switched to class A amps and was shocked at the sound of the Oppo. When they stopped selling these players I almost cried!!! I would have paid $2500 for this without blinking!!!!!
Just found out that OPPO is stopping the manufacturing of their UHD Blu-Ray players, so just ordered a UDP205. This video is so useful for me to squeeze every ounce of performance from the 205. Thanks.
I ordered one myself when I found out. Word has spread fast and Crutchfield was sold out. I got mine from Audio Advisor for the same deal. Received it on Friday 4/6/18 and it sounds glorious on my system. I was gonna wait until the end of the month, but the announcement prompted me to move fast. Out of the box it sounded good, but not great. However, after several hours of continuous use the sound opened up and really started to sing. It has a break-in period, but only a few hours makes a noticeable difference.
It's so good to see I'm not the only crazy one to jump on a 205 before they are all gone. I have been running the 105 for about 5 years and felt like if I didn't get the 205 now, I would be kicking myself after they sold out of them. If you have separate power amps, just run the 205 analog outs, into the power amps and that's it, the cleanest sound you will ever hear. Some may need a preamp to boost the signal to get enough volume but I don't. Lucky I guess. I don't know why more people haven't hooked up their system this way, it's the best, because OPPO is so good. The only reason to spring for the 205 over the 203 is to by pass using a preamp and is it ever worth it. Heck yes. I"m getting mine in a few hours and can hardly wait. I ordered the headphones and boombox too. Headphones are almost gone. Again, is nice to see we still have some music Hi-fidelity lovers out there.
I tried OPPO and returned it. ARC didnt work and Oppo engineers were rude and speaking stupid. Got AV receiver for my tv and active speakers and all worked out of the box. and music sounded much better too.
Thank you for mentioning the noise different drives make , good to know and no one else has the brains to mention that . I'm going to buy the 205 . Not sure if the 203 has a music client , but I see the 205 does .
The 205 is better for music. I can't wait to get mine. The DACs used in the 205 are 8 channel DACs, so that's 4 channels per side (L & R) for the stereo analog outputs. When you buy the 205, please use my affiliate link, as it helps out the channel: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06ZYJ8QTD/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B06ZYJ8QTD&linkCode=as2&tag=tec0ab-20&linkId=0dba43470af3b8e746f428378cd6d643
I was thinking the XLR stereo outputs can be connected to a rack amplifier, being more powerful for stereo listening than an A/V amp that you'd normally watch movies though, or low level listening, but if you want to party, leave the A/V off, and use a good rack amp with XLR inputs.
Try looking at QSC PLD Series rack amplifiers. They are class D, and as a result, run cooler, with less power draw from a domestic wall socket than class AB amps. They have DSP settings, and will drive some nice QSC, or JBL speakers. Just don't bother bridging them to get more power, as it's inefficient to do so, and a waste of amplifier. I'm upgrading all my HT equipment, coming from an Onkyo TX-NR818 AB amp to a class D, but I won't rid if my AB amp, because it can be used as a zone amplifier in another room, but mainly because these particular class AB amps were very good, and will be an amplifier worth holding onto over class D (class D still has a little way to go yet, but getting there.) Besides, you always have yo have a backup amplifier right? But my point being, is the connectivity on this Oppo UDP-205 can do all three outputs = Balanced stereo to rack amps, of mono block amp with XLR inputs (or just use the standard RCA,) HDMI audio only, and audio/video combined, and all surround sound analog outputs to an analog receiver separate. It's this last connectivity option that many people would rather the option not to pay for, as it has a second expensive DAC on that board, and most people will only want high end analog stereo which you get with the first DAC, and HDMI for surround sound movies. This is because MANY receivers such as my 818, and the newewer Onkyo RZ series all have pre-outs only, no analog surround inputs. So these expensive analog surround outputs many times are redundant, and won't suit everyone. It should have been an expandability option on this player, or a third model, rather than a higher price tag. To add insult to injury, the Oppo UDP-203 offers a lesser stereo analog output, and options away from what my be important to consumers, but why pay for a second DAC in the UDP-205 when you don't want, or need it? I was is two minds, and was considering the UDP-205 for it's balanced analog stereo outputs to use with rack amplifiers, but because I decided to keep my PA amplification more portable than a server cabinet my next AV setup is going into (lock it all up away from children, as well as keep dust out,) that player's XLR inputs won't get used. I have instruments, etc in need of a mixer/amplification, so enter the Yamaha EMX7 if you want to check it out? I can.then save some money, and settle for the UDP-203, and let my newer Onkyo TX-RZ920 to all the DAC work. I really annoyed by loudness wars, and having to check dynamic databases to find dynamic music I like though. So yeah, these kinds of reasons are why anyone would choose one player over the other, and if I didn't have that second surround sound DAC board, I would have bought the 205 for analog pure audio listening at the press of a button on the AV Receiver which bypasses all processing. By the way, I'm in Queensland, Australia. UDP-203 is $850AU, and UDP-205 is $2,100AU. price weighs heavy on my shoulders here sadly, hence why the need to avoid redundant componentry.
The 205 is excellent and desirable. The one downside to plugging directly into a power amp is there is no balance control. Much of my music needs some tweaking to get the image perfect. Generally, the vocals are not dead center the way I like it and this annoys me. I have the 205 and it sounds fantastic straight into the amp. The way I solve this problem without sacrificing the quality is by using a passive preamp. The one I have is fully remote controlled, uses transformers for volume and balance control and is just as transparent as the 205 directly into the amp. This allows source switching so I can also use my turntable without having to unplug the Oppo from the amp.
Hi! The 205 is pretty awesome, I wish I bought one. Oh well...sounds like that passive pre-amp does the trick. Do you have a link so I can check it out?
Here is a link for the one I bought....made in the U.K. You can customize it, but I bought the standard version which is fine for me. www.tvcpreamp.co.uk They are made to order so it takes a couple of weeks before they ship. You can't just order on their website you must email them and they will contact you. An alternative that seems to be just as good is the Tortuga passive www.tortugaaudio.com I believe it is made in USA. There is a very positive review of it on youtube by new record day. Some say that passive doesn't have guts, but I get more than ample volume and dynamic kick from mine.
I love it, "You gotta pay to play and the shit ain't cheap!" How true! Thank you for this great tell it like it is video. The best sound you can get straight from the Oppo 205 to you Amp, to your speakers. Volume all the way down at first. Forget about receivers, buy The Oppo, high quailty amps, and Speakers. Amazing sound, but it cost $$$$.
Back in 1989 I purchased top of the line CD player I think paid around $1800. and with my Bryston 4B I was able to connect directly no preamp. Best clean sound you can possibly get.
Inside is right! Not one but two of these DAC's, one for each channel thru the XLR's. Moreover, the connection for your cans go straight to the DAC and is an awesome headphone amp. Also, Parasound is a great choice and is what I use. I have a few but my favorite is the Parasound Halo A 52+ Five Channel Power Amp and for me, it's the best five channel on the market. Buying an amp is a matter of preference because all amps have a distinct sound. I'm talking about when you get into that price point is when this matters and yes, you got to pay to play...lol One last thing about this player is the HDMI input. I have a Sony BDP CS-960 400 disc Blu-ray player and when connected to my OPPO 205, it upconverts those disks to 4K, or at least it sure looks like it does because I've never seen those BD's look so good. Wow! The audio alone is worth the money for an audiophile such as myself. Being a musician it's a no-brainer. But this player clearly has it's video advantages. Good job!
I have the recently discontinued emotiva 600 watt monoblocks--6 of them. They will run class A or AB and have the biggest heaviest toroidal transformers I have ever seen. I hear the difference between these amps and the amps with the switching power supplies of the same brand. It just sounds better but I understand that is it very heavy and is more expensive to ship and can get damaged easier. Parasound is great, but you should do some research as to which company makes them for Parasound. It may shock you!
Finally, someone properly describes the 205 and its potential. I'm using it as a pre for my DIY amps, MartinLogan electrostats and 4 Rythmik subs. Love it.
Adrian L Hi! I'm glad you liked the video! Sounds like you got a cool setup. I've always loved the mid and high detail in ML Xtats. I really would love a pair!
Yes, its very difficult to go back to a non stat or planar speaker. And as you prob know, the rumors of them being a bit anemic in bass is true. So you need to cost of sub(s) plus real quality amps (like the Parasound you showed) plus general TLC for the panels... but its so worth it. :) I ended up with 4 subs through circumstance and while borderline humorous on paper, smooth clean bass with minimal standing waves is truly a gift. Even the wife loves it since the volume can drop and good bass prevails. I think 2 subs is the way to go. Check out some maggies too if you ever are looking at a ML, great speakers! Sub'd!
Great video......thanks for taking the time to do it.... . I really enjoyed watching it and agree with your rational approach to audio systems. I did exactly that a year ago. It was one of biggest sound improvements that I have had in my system in a long time. I had the Lexicon MC-1 processor with a Bob Carver, Signature Grande, 5 channel amp pushing a pair of Klipsch KLF-30 a C-7 for the center and ceiling speakers for the rear. I removed the Lexicon and slid in last years Oppo BDP-105D and the angels sang. Unbelievable......I was floored with the sound. The channel separation is amazing. I have watched a lot of movies and I am still amazed at the sound. Now......to address (2) channel listening........nothing short of amazing also. The separation, soundstage.....awesome. I am not the worlds best critic on video but it looks bazaar with my Sony 75" XBR-X900E. I haven't even made any adjustments with the Darby processor that it has in it. Peace through music
Hi! I'm glad you like the video! I was getting questions from viewers about buying it, and if they even would notice a difference. I really do want one, but I also want some new turn tables. I can only imagine what the sound quality could be like. Since I'm running an Atmos setup, I won't ever use the 8 pre-outs for movies. BUT...I will use the XLR outs for stereo listening, directly into my new Parasound amp, it's gonna be awesome!! Thanks for watching!!
Loved your review and your no bullshit approach! As a fellow musician of over 30 years and music teacher looking at upgrading my 5.1 system, I was definitely thinking of going from my old Denon 2808CI up to the AVR-X6300H and also thinking of the UDP-205. Now you got me thinking of the separates approach!! I do love the 5 channel stereo that Denon creates with my mostly CD/SACD collection. Just to clarify, if I run the stereo analogue out of the 205, then I am going to get the Sabre DAC sound and this could be converted into the All Channel Stereo that the Denon creates, effectively giving me the best of both worlds, right? Or, I could use the Pure Direct mode of the Denon for 2 channel? Thanks so much for the great vid and I look forward to watching more!!
+ChrisHaas1 Hi Chris! Glad you liked the video!! I went from the 3808CI to the X6300H and I'm loving it! I'm still waiting to get me a 205, but I want to get that Parasound amp first. To answer your question, yes, you could do that. However, the pure direct mode is what I use now and what I would use if I had the 205. I'm not really fond of the 5CH/7CH Stereo from the Denon. If I really want a 5CH listening experience, I would get an SACD version of the music. I have the SACD of Dark Side of the Moon, and that 5.1 mix is stellar!! You could also connect the 5.1 pre-amp OUTS from the 205 to your pre-amp INPUTs on the Denon to utilize the Sabre DAC for a 5.1 SACD mix. That would sound killer! Hope that helps!
@@TechnoDad Good advice but I would go with the separate's approach. Man, I'm telling you, when I went to separate's it made a huge difference in sound. Yes, it's more expensive but it's well-worth the price tag. I have the Marantz AV7702 MKII, a 5CH Parasound Halo A 52+, 2CH Parasound 2125 v2, a 2CH Marantz MM 7025 2CH, a 5CH Rotel RMB-1585 amp, all connected XLR except for the Parasound 2125 V2. My speaker setup are a pair of Klipsch R625FA and a pair ML electro -statics. The center is a Martin Logan Motion 8i and well timber matched. All other surround speakers are Klipsch speakers including my Dolby Atmos setup. I don't have the OPPO connected straight to an amp because I wouldn't be able to get the Dolby Atmos so it's connected to my receivers 7.1 inputs. I always use Pure mode anyway so not any difference. All of this took me a few years to get but it was all worth it.I had a Dune media player but I sent it back. It was a POS! I really don't need one since I can connect a USB drive and/or get to all my movies over the network on my OPPO. Oh, and right now you can get a Parasound Halo A 52+ for $2,799.00 at Audio Advisor. Sure, it's a demo but still like new. Better than paying $3,199.00.
+Metal Klobo Yeah, the 203 is fine for me now. When I can actually sit and listen to music is the issue. But I'm looking at that media player and putting all my CDs and FLAC files on it.
Techno Dad yes...what you said in that video some days ago was sick...this media player seems to be awesome...but I actually just stream those flacs via my mobile phone.
If you want the cleanest sound possible, run the 205 straight to the power amp, that's by far the cleanest sound you'll ever get, just use the remote control on the OPPO for the volume control and that's all the control you need. I would get the McIntosh amp though, they are a little warmer sounding, but better sounding, super clean, no distortion at any volume level and your ears will never get tired listening to a McIntosh amp. Also get the most expensive power cords and hook up wires from wire world that you can afford. Those wires are an important link to clean power, that sounds great, it's voodoo that you can hear once you are in the high end of clean power of an OPPO to Power Amp. Good luck.
I had my Oppo-205 going direct into an Emotiva XPA-7 Gen 3 power amp, but ... it wasn't loud enough (well, I live in the country and have no neighbours). So I bought a Parasound Halo P7 preamp, which functions as just a glorified volume knob. Lotta $ just for that.
Couple years ago, I had the same question about 103 vs 105d. I was going for a CD player for two channel audio using a rogue audio amp. Went with the 105d. Never looked back. Hooked them up to Maggies. 👍🏽
Only makes sense to pay all that cash if going separate,I had top of line 1989 Yamaha CD player that I directly had my Bryston 4B plug into, bypass the preamp.
I got the 205 because I got a great price. I have an Anthem 720 receiver which does not have the 7.1 inputs. Using the HDMI (chocolate) cables, would it better to use both (one for audio) and the other straight to the TV or just use one to the receiver and then the receivers HDMI out to the TV or does it matter?
Thanks for the Blu-ray info. The best change in the 1990s was the cord changes for speakers took a leap in quality. That really showed marginally sound quality. Nice to a see the difference. I realized when a friend told me I needed sound testing my room to get the best sound and added sound acoustic covering for the room. That priced my out. Like you said. That shit ain't cheap. Its good to know the difference between the two. With quality with video has more to do with the TV and a top of the line player like oppo. I think the major reason OppO opted out of Blu-ray business. There are to many options and a price point for the consumer is more important than ever. Those that can afford anything at any price a fewer ever day. Keep the videos coming Techno Dad 😎
Thanks Techno Dad. I randomly came across this line of blu ray players and I am trying to decide between the 205 and the 203. Gotta question and pardon my ignorance. I have a NAD T187 and the NAD 975 amp. If I get the 205 and run the HDMI out of it to my 187 and then to my 975 amp, am I defeating the DAC processing of the 205? The challenge for me is understanding what to do with the rest of my audio sources that are run into my 187 via HDMI like my tv or my gaming system. I guess I am a bit confused on how my audio should be setup if I get the 205. Thanks for any help.
Hi! So really, the only way to take advantage of the DACs in the 205 is to route all the audio through it's optical input. Not sure if that's something you want to do. Let's say you have a bunch of CDs that you would play in the 205. To take advantage of that DAC, you have to connect the stereo analog out to your pre/pro. Now, if you wanted to use that DAC for 7.1 movie watching, then you have connect the 8 analog outs from the 205 to your pre/pro. That is if you are watching a blu ray in the 205. If you have any other components, you would have to run them through the 205 to utilize the DACs. So it really depends on your setup and how many other components you have. If you would like additional help with your system/setup, I do private Home Theater Consulting if you join my Patreon at the $15/month level. Check it out here: www.patreon.com/TechnoDad
Techno Dad, I am interested in purchasing a 203 or 205 for use as a 4k bluray player, not only for the high quality video playback but also for its ability to convert 1080 content through is HDMI input to 4K using its processor. I see you have DirectTV so your service is 1080p I believe but my service is 1080i only from my cable box. Have you tried using your 203 to do this? Most TV's will convert 1080 content but I was wondering if there is an improvement using the 203's processor before the signal is input to the TV in 4K? According to tech support at Oppo the output signal is improved greatly. Please let us know! Thanks!
If you going to use the 205 for just bluray movies & connecting it to to your amp using one hdmi for picture the other for sound will that improve sound over the oppo 203?
Holy crap ! I just priced a udp-205 on Google and its 3500 dollars!!!....ouch!! Is it really that good?....lol!! I'm thinking I could buy an entire klipsch 5.1 speaker system and still be able to get a really good 4k bluray player!...lol!!
Techno Dad, thankyou for this video. If you please, help me with some doubts here. I have already my PRIMARE CD31CD Player and I like it a lot. But once I need space and I am looking for a BluRay Player to join the setup, I was thinking about of the "2 on 1 solution". Maybe selling my excelent Primare CD31 and using the future new OPPO 205 as a Universal Player (CD/DVD/BluRay), and using my FLAC/Hi Res audio files through the DAC feature of it. But my only concern is, will the OPPO (in audio matter) do the same thing then the PRIMARE in terms of audio quality? I have a stereo sistem (tube amp+turntable+Phono preamp+CD Player Primare+Speakers+Cables+etc) next to the OLED TV and a receiver for the AV component).
Hi Luis! So after looking into the Primare CD31, it looks like it has a Bur Brown DAC that was released in 1998. The Oppo 205 has an ESS Sabre Pro DAC that was released last year. I would say the ESS DAC might be better as the Burr Brown is older. The only way to tell for yourself is to go listen to it somewhere.
Thankyou very much for your answer. I just noticed that the new Primare BD32 MKII Universal Disk Player (a competitor for the OPPO) prefered have the Burr-Brown (OPA2134). Witch is the best? Thankyou.
hi TD. I'm planning on getting the upcomming yamaha rx3070 av receiver - it has xlr balanced input. would i get a noticable difference if i get the 205 and connect via xlr compared to just connecting the 203 via hdmi? What are your recommendations?
+Elmer Madarang Hi! That's really hard to say. It's mostly for music listening, do you have a bunch of CDs you still listen to? Or high quality FLAC or other uncompressed audio files? If so, you might hear the difference on a nice system. What power amps and speakers are you running??
Techno Dad Thanks for getting back to me. You answered my question. I still have a bunch of cds but i generally use airplay via my iphone and ipad to listen to them(much easier than looking for the cd and then loading and playing). Currently i have a midrange pioneer receiver but going to upgrade to the yamaha rx3070's. I have definitive bp2000 bipolar speaker set. With that I'll be going with the oppo203( save me some money), unless you believe i'm better off going the 205 route.
I'm really considering getting this or the Oppo Sonica. What would you say would be the best way to steam Tidal on this as the Sonica has native Tidal support?
+K - Doggy Hi! If there is native support on the Sonica, then use that with analog output. If you're normal streaming device has optical out, then connect that to the Sonica and use analog out from Sonica to AVR or amp or whatever.
Thanks for this awesome video Techno Dad! Now that OPPO is going out of business, it really helps to make a decision as to which one to buy. Thanks again and keep up the great work! =)
Aaron Mathias Hi Aaron! After some digging, I found out that ESS has made a newer DAC since the release of the 105D. As I haven't heard either players, I would imagine that the new DAC in the 205 would be better. ESS calls the DAC in the 105D their Reference DAC. The DAC in the 205 ESS calls their 'top of the line.' I hope that helps!
You think that's nuts you should check out the price of a new car in Australia. The cost of merchandise is very high there because of high taxes, but they get a lot of free stuff because of it. Also, wages are generally high.
techno dad thanks for this info, i currently own the 203 and i love it and i just saw the 205 just came out and was wondering what the difference was and i did see other videos about it but info was very vague, but you went down to the point and said what i needed to know and i like how you say things how it is swearing and shit that was great. im a audiophile and i love music but i dont have 1300 bucks to spend to listen to better audio quality lol anyway great vid and ill be subscribing....
+Rafael Bedolla Hi! Thank you so much!! I'm glad you found the video informative. Honestly, I wanted to know the difference before I made the video, and in my research I found out a whole lot about the player. I also found out that Oppo sells the DAC separately for $799. You could add that to your 203 and have a pseudo 205. But you only get the one stereo DAC and not the multichannel DAC. Someone else commented saying I just saved them $800. This TH-cam thing is pretty cool! Thanks again for watching!
Yes TH-cam is a possibly an everyday tool someone can use, and yes research is key that you know what you're getting into before you buy, at the moment I'm in the market to buy a house and once I do that I'll be looking into building a custom theater/sound system and I'll be coming back and see what speakers, amps and other components I might need... great work and keep it up and thanks once again.
Rafael Bedolla Nice man! I'm looking at adding Parasound Amps to my setup. Pretty excited about it. I have a dealer friend that can get some great pricing. Email me when you are looking for components and speakers: technodad55@gmail.com
I'm a audiophile also. The 205 I think is the unit for me,, I have prayed about it. sure, I know God or religion is not popular these days, I'm old school I have to pray. when it comes to music it's all about the source material. garbage in garbage out. it doesn't matter how much you pay for the hardware if the source material isn't good then what do you have?I have heard bad sounding CD's and Flac on state of the art hardware.
If you're running Atmos, then you'll need to use HDMI and you wouldn't be using the surround DAC. If you're using 7.1 Dolby TrueHD and/or DTS:MA, and connecting the 205 directly to amps and using the 205 as your pre/pro then it's worth it. But, if you don't want to do all that, it's probably not necessary.
Thanks for great video. Helped clear my thoughts that I would really only need it above the 203, ( I currently use the lowly 95 model) for my SACD collection, and that it probably was well down the line of diminishing returns, but I ordered it anyway! Great run through the setup of 203 on your earlier video, won't need to read all the gumph now. 👍👍👍😄😄
+trevor hampson You're welcome! Thanks for watching! Yeah it's tough sometimes to figure out if the extra cash is worth it. I might make the move to separates so the 205 could be for me.
I can't get enough of AV videos. Keep it up, man. By the way, I'm sure you love your wife, but I think it's hilarious when you low key bash her lol. I picture her possible reaction to your vlogs
Yup! I ended up getting a Parasound Halo Integrated 2.1 channel amp. It has an ESS Sabre Reference DAC, so I'm not sure I need or want the 205. But who knows, maybe I'll change my mind.
Techno Dad very nice the only thing I put above that would be mark levingston. Or Jeff Rowland amps. Just trying to decide if I want an Oppo or not I had one before but it looks like streaming starting to win the battle between disc and streaming
Well, I would go with the Oppo because it'll be the last 4K player you'll ever buy. I still prefer 4K UHD discs over streaming services. I do think if you have an OLED, an Oppo 203 and an Apple TV 4K would be a great combo. I just got the Apple TV 4K and will be making a review video soon.
Techno Dad thanks bro yeah I just bought a Apple 4K TV last month I love it I normally have disc and was surprised of the clarity of Apple TV thanks for sharing your advice
No problem man! So you're half way there already, get the Oppo and you're done. You can always rent 4K UHD disc as well. BTW, your name is one of my favorite Metallica song!
Wassup TD, when you say better audio quality, are movies included or just music files. I have Yamaha separates, the cx5100 and cx5000 series with Klipsch RP-280 speakers. Which player do you recommend?
+504 Roller Hi! So that does count for movies if you connect the 205 directly to you amp. But that will not work for Atmos or DTS:X. So to take advantage of the Sabre DACs, you have to connect via the analog pre-outs.
I feel poor once I heard this guy say that my samsung 8500 is loud. Sadly he's right but my cheap vizio 5.1 surround sound helps but hear it much. I wish i had the best of the best when it comes to theater stuff. I love quality, just can't afford it.
People were saying Samsung is leaving the 4k player market good bye and that will be the end of 4k discs yea right Samsung made some of the worst players and will not be missed I got 2 oppo203s and I love it..
At one time, I thought receivers were all anyone needed. But my ears were opened by some excellent separates that completely changed my mind. I never looked back. In fact, today's receivers are inferior to the ones made in the 70's when there was a power war and measurement war.
Thanks Techno Dad for the video. You just saved me $800 because I was planning to buy the UDP-205 but after your explaining the differences to the UDP-203 I really dont need the UDP-205. Thanks again Techno Dad.
+Troy Pham Hi! That's so awesome to hear! I'm glad you were able to get something substantial from this video, that's really cool.
I'm on a wait list at Oppo.com. Hoping they squeeze one more out for me during their final run.
I tried OPPO and returned it. ARC didnt work and Oppo engineers were rude and speaking stupid. Got AV receiver for my tv and active speakers and all worked out of the box. and music sounded much better too.
And, the 205 is ideal for multi-channel SACD, for those with analog multi-channel preamps.
Yes it is!!
I ended up with 4 subs through circumstance and while borderline humorous on paper, smooth clean bass with minimal standing waves is truly a gift. Even the wife loves it since the volume can drop and good bass prevails. I think 2 subs is the way to go. Check out some maggies too if you ever are looking at a ML, great speakers!
Sub'd!
Can you still get one of these new still? Shame that went out business, best 4K player's on the market.
Again..what a video...liked it pretty much...I mean...the 205 is just a player for all those music enthusiasts....the 203 is enough for me atm..
Good luck.
I don't watch movies at all and I bought an oppo for the 2 channel sound!
Thanks for this video, Channa. Hope you're staying safe too. Does the OPPO still hold its ground in 2021?
The Panasonic UB9000 is like slightly better. But the Oppo can play many more file types the Panasonic just cannot.
@@TechnoDad thanks man. I might pick up a used one, as audio matters to me 😊
Thanks and Stay Safe!
Good job explaining all this , my receiver has a sabre dac what benefit does this give me compared to a receiver that doesn't have it?
ericimi GTS
Retro Force gts how to get a life .
ericimi did it help?
Is there anything comparable since neither of these are made anymore?
I got the 205 because I got a great price. I have an Anthem 720 receiver which does not have the 7.1 inputs. Using the HDMI (chocolate) cables, would it better to use both (one for audio) and the other straight to the TV or just use one to the receiver and then the receivers HDMI out to the TV or does it matter?
If you're going digital, it doesn't matter
Your absolutely right guy👍
If you wanna play you gotta pay 💰
Hi Stephen! Thank you so much for watching! I got a lot more cool content on the way!
Thanks man. I'll look up the link and thanks for the speedy reply. Just gotta say your abbreviation GTS hilarious. LOFL! =-)
Lol! You're welcome! Thanks for watching!!
Thanks!
what about 5 channel SACD or DSD? Are they different between the 203 and the 203?
If you going to use the 205 for just bluray movies & connecting it to to your amp using one hdmi for picture the other for sound will that improve sound over the oppo 203?
+b4chch4n No it won't. You'd have to use the analog outs to be using the Sabre DACs. If you're only going to connect it via HDMI, the 203 is enough.
hello. can u plug-in and play a hi res player like an astell & kern to any of it's usb input specially the one usb in the front of the 205
16:40 Those amps go up to 11
Thanks Techno Dad, So will the DAC's still kick in from digital in to digital out? and then to the AMP?
Hi! No, the DACs will only be used with analog output.
Thank you!
How can you connect the xlr from oppo to av processors? And will I still use the oppo's dac this way?
Thank yoi
Holy crap ! I just priced a udp-205 on Google and its 3500 dollars!!!....ouch!! Is it really that good?....lol!! I'm thinking I could buy an entire klipsch 5.1 speaker system and still be able to get a really good 4k bluray player!...lol!!
Yeah there's a definite markup since their discontinuation. I was lucky to purchase it on the first day at retail $1300
Thankyou.
Luis, I really can't say which one is best or not. It's very subjective. I'm sure it'll be good!
technodad. if you decide to upgrade to the udp-205 and sell your udp-203. PM please.I would love to buy it from you. :)
Luis Chavez Do you live in the US?
Luis Chavez I am selling my 105d
Techno Dad
Thanks for getting back to me.
Are you talking about the Sonica DAC or the Sonica speaker? The Sonica DAC has the same Sabre chip as the 205.
Techno Dad thank you for the reply! I meant the Sonica DAC.
Thanks! I'm glad you found the video and I'm glad you found it helpful!
Fire video bro.
+Dukeoden7458 Thanks man! It was a long one!!
Highly informative video indeed. Would be awesome to hear your thoughts on the sonic audio differences between the UDP-205 vs the UDP-105D :-)
I have the emotiva xmc1 preamp processor are you saying to bypass it's decoding engine and use the oppo205 instead by not setting it on bitstream?
+Creswell Jack No, the 205 is good for anyone using analog outputs.
Techno Dad ok cool that's what I thought Mr dad keep up the good works
+Creswell Jack Thank you Jack!!
+Creswell Jack Thank you Jack!!
I BOUGHT THE 205 WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT ( STILL IN BOX) $1300. JUST WAITING TILL THEY FINISH MY SUNROOM............
Hi from Croatia! Bluesound vault 2 or dac in oppo? Which dac is better?
I don't know. That Bluesound DAC looks impressive. I haven't heard it though.
The 203 retails here in Australia for $880.
Oppo is gone now :( Is there anything can get as good today?
Why would you need the brennan? Just play the disc on the oppo 😮
The IMAX I work at runs an Oppo 105.
Very cool!
The 205 is retail $2,225 here in Australia.
+darren watkin Wow! That's nuts!
You think that's nuts you should check out the price of a new car in Australia. The cost of merchandise is very high there because of high taxes, but they get a lot of free stuff because of it. Also, wages are generally high.
hi luv your passion but your selling more than showing comparing and letting everything show itself good or bad.
Thanks
Lon
techno dad thanks for this info, i currently own the 203 and i love it and i just saw the 205 just came out and was wondering what the difference was and i did see other videos about it but info was very vague, but you went down to the point and said what i needed to know and i like how you say things how it is swearing and shit that was great. im a audiophile and i love music but i dont have 1300 bucks to spend to listen to better audio quality lol anyway great vid and ill be subscribing....
Keep it up bro.
Thanks!
The sabre dac's are for stereo Only?
No, also for 7.1 channel pre-outs
Techno Dad if you owned a high-end pre-pro would you bother with the udp-205.
+Dennis Olivares Hahaha! In regards to the disc spinning sound, She says, "if I can notice this, then it's a problem." Haha!
$3400 for a Blu Ray player is insane.
LOL! When I shot this video it was $1,300
WOW! YOU'RE GOOD. THANKS
Are You Still rocking your 203.
It's all good, Chris, no need to feel poor. There are good options like the Panasonic UB420 that don't break the bank - amzn.to/3grr8ad
I got a 205 all because it have balanced output.
People were saying Samsung is leaving the 4k player market good bye and that will be the end of 4k discs yea right Samsung made some of the worst players and will not be missed I got 2 oppo203s and I love it..
Lol! That’s what I said too! I had issues with the M9500 I bought to review. Love my Oppo as well!
This is a great video I have to check out the Brennan!!!!
Thanks for the info, and yes this shyt is not CHEAP
Excellent comparison review, very informative, thank you. One question, what's with the profanity? Aren't you better than that?
Lol! Yeah, sorry. Been trying to get better at that.
THE 203 HAS A IN HDMI CAN YOU PUMP THAT DAC THOUGH YOUR SNEAKERS THOU YOUR APP IS THAT ALSO BETTER
lol you probably got tired of me bashing oppo and just had to make this video .
I have to sony one 4k blu ray player the x800.

16:12 Techno Granddad
Anyone who thinks this is worth the price makes over 150k a year .
Sad to learn Oppo is going bye bye 👋🏽 Uggh 😡
Yeah, it sucks!
@@TechnoDad BIGTIME!😭😭😭
How about a disclaimer if you're going to drop F-bomb's. Not kid friendly.
Sorry!!!
205 a waste of money.
Your receiver should be the pinnacle of sound reproduction
At one time, I thought receivers were all anyone needed. But my ears were opened by some excellent separates that completely changed my mind. I never looked back. In fact, today's receivers are inferior to the ones made in the 70's when there was a power war and measurement war.
Sadly OPPO is dead. I hope reborn soon!
Yeah, it's sad. I don't think they will come back though.
Screw disks!!!!
+dr3yec Lol!!!
watch your cussing please........
Sorry...
