The carpet in airports is for sound dampening, huge vaulted ceilings echo. Also, people spill things rushing through the airport. Wet polished stone floors are a slipping hazard (staff may not know about it) and are noisy. If there is a medical event, you probably fair better passing out on carpeting than a hard stone floor. But i can assure you it's not to slow you down.
Getting through the international terminal 5 is a joke in terms of getting through security compared to the other domestic terminals. It also doesn't help that this is the only terminal that isn't connected to the others and it requires you to leave and go back through security again.
The CARPET!! Thank you! Its ridiculous. Phoenix sky harbor is the worst. Carpet everywhere in their long walkways connect different concourses. It’s ridiculous.
