  • Kimberly saw how much apartments went for in San Francisco and decided to commute to her Tiny Home On Wheels. She is not the first person I have met who works in the city but lives simply in the country.

Put an add on Craigslist for someone to let you park on their property on the cheep. It’s easy passive income for the owner and the few bucks you put out on renting a spot will spare you that horrible commute giving you more time to enjoy life. Look and see if there are any small farms in a closer area and possibly trade labor and maybe make lifelong friends!!! Great home and mad respect for making it happen, just want you to be able to enjoy it!! Thanks for sharing!!

5 hour commute......I'd definitely be looking at moving the tiny home closer. That's the beauty of those things being portable. But I'm sure it would be quite an undertaking moving one of those, and finding a location. They aren't like RVs, which move much easier.

If I had that beautiful home I would love to enjoy more time at home than on the road, but I know we all have to do what we need to do, I do a 3 hour commute - it takes a large piece of my day away. 5 hour commute is a bit much, but i know several people in the bay area right now doing 4 hour a day commutes to SF bay area. On one hand the salaries in SF are high, but the commute is grueling. My commute was 3 hours a day at one point. We just need a better more expansive transit system. BART (the transit system here) doesn't extend long enough and people commute almost an hour to their nearest Bart station sometimes. You can thank Koch brothers for lobbying against public transit for decades in the US. Several other countries have us beat in public transportation, while everyone here is clogging the highways with their cars.

I live in the SF Bay Area and that commute is pretty normal even when you live IN the city or around it. I used to live in suburb daly city and when my job in SF transferred to another locations (palo alto, sunnyvale, and some days i was at santa clara), the commute easily turned into 2 to 2.5 hours on weekdays because everybody was commuting on the road! on weekends, the same commute is only 35 to 45 minutes! traffic is terrible. now i live 45 minutes southeast of SF in the East Bay and decided to work near where I live. yes, this job since the last 6 years moves me around also, but all in "close" proximity that I can get to on local road; maybe freeway some days. I never heard of Isleton, but now I see it's near Sacramento/state capital...and I've been hearing for years that people have been doing the same (as it's also on the news every week) of someone also commuting 3 + hours to SF work and then back home.
I guess you chose the best for you! even all the places closer to SF charge higher rental costs for RV places and tiny homes. but I do understand the feeling of coming home and then all the feelings melt away that you can relax. My father's coworker bought a house in Medford, Oregon and he commuted 8 hours on the weekends to go to his home and then stayed with a friend during the week to work in SF, also. So I understand what many people do with tiny homes or affordable housing.

    • @maobfh

It’s not unusual for people who work in LA, San Francisco Bay Area and San Diego to be forced several hours from the city for housing. The housing shortage and the exorbitant housing costs have forced people further and further away. Californians are throwing in the towel, as well and leaving for Colorado, New Mexico, the Pacific Northwest and other areas and using the monies that they make selling their house to buy in the communities they move to. Unfortunately, this is driving the costs of housing up for the locals in their new communities and forcing them out of the housing market. The millennials (and others ) are starting to reject the expense and lifetime mortgages and going smaller and more mobile. They re living in tiny houses, buses, vans and homesteading and moving their employment off site to work at home or on the road or refusing to enter the traditional work environment to create their own avenues to sustain their lifestyles. There seem to be more professional TH-camrs, self employment, new business models and I don’t know what else. I am interested to see what impact this will have on the housing market and for employers.

I was thinking similar. Should have made the bottom floor shorter. She said her cabinets were a little high. Build to the customers height. She'd be better off making her couch a pullout bed, and storing stuff upstairs.

FIVE HOUR COMMUTE IS INSANE? Unless she is making 250,000 in the Bay Area than she is foolish. What a complete waste of your time. That would drain the soul out of me.

Like her tiny house...very well thought out iMHO..
One thing I'm surprised hasn't taken off w/in the THC (Tiny Home Community) is using folding staircases for accessing loft/bedroom, as seen here:
    th-cam.com/video/Y2lV7w65GyE/w-d-xo.html
Side Note: I know a lot of builders use the under-staircase for storage but in the case of say a 2nd loft, I think that would be a good option to incorporate.

    I don't mind living in a tiny house,but a 5hr commute? No way.
Why use a wide angle lens?

She never said how much this tiny home costed. It's an OK home but the bedroom is very unconfortable even with the bed lowered. No, it didn't have to be this way there are so many great designs and solutions for the bedroom she definitely could have found something if she had done better research.

5 hours commuting from Oregon to SF both way? It cannot be only 2 1/2 hours from the Oregon border to SF?
Anyway there is no awesome tiny house worthy over putting self trapped in a car for many hours in heavy traffic. Best wishes to you both.

She said she lives in Isleton, CA not Oregon. Maybe its the Tiny Home Builders might be what you heard are from Oregon.

Can you take BART from Antioch instead of driving the whole way to SF? At least you could read and relax on the train instead of being in traffic for that whole time.

All that is left to do is get rid of the anchor that is costing you money just to make a living a new job that pays you not to spend what you make working for the job or at lest get them to pay the commute cost of time and your cash to make them money...

5 hour commute per day is just crazy. You are spending almost 1/6 of your life in a car driving back and forth to work. An extra 25 hours of work a week is a part time gig of job at $20 per hour will make you an extra $500 a week or $2000 extra per month. That difference alone will supplement closer living arrangements or a blend of something in the middle.
In those 5 hours you could work more and make the difference of a closer drive. That will wreck your back and your health and who knows how many bad weather close to accident situations you get yourself into with that much driving. Plus with that bedroom there is no fire exit if anything catches downstairs and you are trapped. Get a thinner mattress at least and make sure that window has an exit.
