I am wondering if people would even notice that the fan has to be at the VERY FRONT. I feel like it could also always be just at the back position and there does not need to be a pulling it back and forth. If it is always at the back position he can stand behind it or walk in front of it easily.

You can see from the lighting that he is in front of the fan
Those blades arent sharp. Magicians always use blunt blades in their tricks in case of an accident. Maybe the stagehand could faint for example

Brush the lights turned out it is obvious.
It would have been a lot better if the magician came out front and closed the shield, and then the fan moved at the exact same time as the spotlight. The audience would still think the fan is right up against the shield as the magician goes round to stand in front of it.
"Do not attempt this OR ANY OTHER ILLUSIONS AT HOME". Because we all know how dangerous card tricks can be!!!
