KAYAKING with HOVER AIR X1 PRO MAX - Best Drone on Water?
Capturing good drone footage while on the water is not easy, especially on a moving object like a kayak. So I will be testing KAYAKING with HOVER AIR X1 PRO MAX to see if it is the best drone on the water. I will be testing out the Follow Mode, Dolly Track, and the Side Track. The ultimate test will be me attempting to catch the Hover Air X1 PRO MAX while on the kayak. Let's see how it goes!

I've been testing the DJI Neo on the water while kayaking and had alot of fun testing it and I thought, how about using the DJI Neo for swimming? Wouldn't that be a fun test? Please note that the DJI Neo was not made for the water and it never was. This is clearly stated in the instruction manual, however, I wanted to test the limits. Have fun watching this video testing the DJI Neo while swimm...

I will be sharing my experience kayaking with the DJI NEO and share with you if it is any good. I have been using the DJI Mini 2 however the functions of the DJI NEO seemed too good to resist and I believe it will make my life easier while kayaking to get some great footage. There is definitely a learning curve when using a drone while kayaking so I believe I will get better at it and capture b...

The video quality is excellent. I cannot wait for my X1 Pro to arrive. I enjoyed the shot video and its scenery. Here in the Midwest states we have nothing that interesting.
Thanks for watching! I am sure you will have lots of fun with your X1 Pro!
Of the 2 dozen or so Greenland paddles I own, the Ipik is the only one I don't like/use. The loom I find too much of an oval and it makes for less control in blended strokes, especially in rough water. rotating the paddle going from a forward stroke to a draw and back to a bow draw or even a pry (any time I need to rotate the blade) results in the contact patch between my hands and the loom changing - getting smaller. Too much loss of control. The shape of the oval also means the paddle gets very wide at the shoulder - less smooth during a sliding stroke or extending the paddle quickly in a combat roll. Oddly, I find it too light. I have a very light grip on the paddle so a bit of weight in the paddle helps provide me with better feedback on how the blade interacts with the water. It IS a great paddle for most for rolling and touring, just not ideal for rough water.
You have some great points! I haven't really used my Kalleq all that much so I think I will need to use it more to experience it.
Just saw another TH-camr doing some testing and his conclusion was that using the AI (autonomous) modes over water was asking for trouble but that the Neo would do OK when used in conjunction with a controller and when locked onto a lot of satellites (17+ I think he said).
Great review as always! As a fellow paddler using drones I have had my fair amount of accidents and 2 crashes, therefore I am hoping for your potential review of using the DJIs Flip on the water vs this Hover X1 Pro Max. Your DJI Neo over water review def. saved my from having similar experiences as you did. And since I am already very used to DJIs quality and the logic its controls work, I am hoping the DJI Flip would have similar qualities as the Hover Air over water, since it seems to lack the control issues over water.
question, at minute 640 you said i have my phone and you are going to connect to the drone....THEN there is a jump-cut on the video and THEN you are connected to the drone.... How long it took for the drone to connect to the phone? it seems easy, I tried to do it and it did not connected. how did you do it? =) thank you for the video! great job! was your phone connected to the phone?
Hi.. I wasn’t connected at the beginning and only connected after I needed help. It was relatively quick to connect using the App. I think you have to be quite close to the drone to connect to the app. I was only a few meters away so had no issues connecting. How far were you when trying to connect?
Will be curious to hear if the beacon ended up making a difference.
One suggestion would be to do these tests with the new Flip
That's something I was thinking about but I already have so many drones 😅😅 After watching some reviews of the Flip, I think I will wait for future versions.
Nice Video.. Love it..
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Nice! I made myself a wooden paddle, using the dimensions of the Gearlab Akiak, which is the one I'm interested in eventually buying. I wasn't sure how unhappy my brain would be with a Greenland paddle after 35 years with a euro style paddle. Even a knotty plank of pine from my local hardware store turned into a nice enough paddle to test. No surprise, these Inuit folks knew what they were doing. Freekin' love Greenland paddles now.
These landing problems should now be history since FW 7.6.7 - had them now and then also with the older firmware versions, but no problem any more since the latest update!
Curious. Since a Trak kayak is changeable which way is the easiest to practice beginner rolls, with high rocker or low rocker?
From my personal experience, having a bit of rocker makes it easier. I might have to test it out! Haha
At the end were you in Smart Preview or did you just fire up the app and connect to the Hover and then click on Manual Control?
I just connected with the app and flew it back with manual control. Worked well!
Great test and amazing footage, looking really great!
Thanks! I plan to capture more footage with it
DONT DO THIS MINE HAS AUTO LANDED FOR NO REASON MANY TIMES
just use DJI it will never auto land and the battery life is much longer, this thing will legit land if you stop moving or if the "Omni Terrian" isnt enabled, which mine never turns on Id starve my self before I spend 700$ on this to play around water after the time Ive had with it The hover one is a bit better for sure but you do you
Thanks for the warning! I hope yours didn’t land in the water
I'm looking for a drone capable of autofollowing me on the water while i do my favourite sport, jetsurfing. Hoverair x1 promax seems to be the one, but since i do that in early morning, i'm afraid that the reflex of the dawn on the water could confuse it. What do you think about that?
Hi! I’ve been told that ND filters could help with the reflection but I have tried.. Hover Air also sells them
DJI recommend not to fly the Neo low over water. So many disasters on TH-cam
Oh yes I’ve seen. I’ve been lucky!
Built mine from recycled balancing beam. Axe, draw knife , hand plane
Amazing! I wish I had the skills to do that too!
I'm better buider than the kayaker 😂❤️
Buddy I missed this one But I'm glad I found it because it was so funny, however, I'm very glad it didn't go for a swim. Great test.
I’m always prepared to go for a swim when I use these drones on the kayak 😂
I'm enjoying my original hover x1 drone.
These are great little drones!
I really really want to buy this after reviewing the dji flip over numerous review videos. This still is superior due to the simplicity of getting the shot you want quickly and effectively without wasting valuable precious minutes which sometimes is a big deal during low light hours that combined with the portability factor. You can't really throw the dji flip in your pocket the thing is massive still. That was a big deal breaker for me. That and the fact they stripped crap tons of features off it made it very off putting for someone like me. My ONLY gripe with this drone is the fact that it has a little tiny battery of what they claim and state it has a 16minute battery but if thats what they are stating then it probably has way less than that battery life more like 12-13 minutes range. That's extremely lame because once battery degradation occurs it will have 30% less than that most likely. Like why couldn't they have put a 20 minute battery on it. I feel 20 minute's is still not enough but it's much better to swallow than a tiny battery. Now i kind of don't want to get either drone's and just wait for new iterations to release or at least a firmware update bumping up the minutes on them, dji has done this in the past. 16 minutes like come on thats not enough time to do much.
DJI flip is much better and at reasonable price !
The flip just launched.. so it wasn’t available to purchase
I think this one is better no geo fencing
DJI has recently removed Geofencing from all its drones.
O llevas el BEACON?
Yo no me fiaría mucho,yo de dos vuelos ya se me ha quedado sin seguirme...😅 Como para probarlo encima del agua
The Neo takes about 30 secs to lock on to enough satellites. If you control the drone before it has those locks you may have an unpleasant experience.
Thanks for the tip!
Why oh why are people still using Gopros that overheat? The solution is simple....get the DJI action 4 or 5..problem solved. NO overheating.
Hi! Great question :) I had the GoPro 9 and also a cover on it so it overheated. But as you suggested, I got the OSMO 5 Action Pro recently and I love it!
Just lost mine to a lake on the first time i tested it. 😢 I did not connect it to the phone and used the dronie preset... I could only watch it slowly go down to and meet its faith
Oh no!!!! Which mode did you use and were you on a kayak? Hopefully you have DJI care!
@@Fishaholicboy unfortunately I did not get DJI care for this one as I had for all my other drones. Never lost one before. So I used the dronie preset, and no I did it from the shore, no Kayak. T was like -3C so i didn't even try swimming for it🥶
The Gadgeteer in me absolutely loves this! The apocalypse realist however... If I was a normal person this would be great. 😂🤘
Haha! Could be good for a great escape :)
crazy
Thanks!
I can't fly my drone while using the beacon and my iphone at the same time.....the cord doesn't work for me...disappointed- now I gotta convince my wife that I should buy another drone because this one was pricey and now my left side of my joystick doesn't work either so now I gotta use the motion controller
Oh no.. did you contact them regarding the issues you’re having?
That's sad to hear. What was the issue with the cord? Wrong type, compatibility, phone? Joystick issue?
I see you buying a surksi someday in the future 😊
You read my mind… my next kayak will be a surfski!
Grab it with a fishing net next time lol
You’re not the first person to suggest this ;)
"COOL" 👍
I might have to get surfski next
@@Fishaholicboy You will get some speed it. I have never been on one but they look a bit tippy when you stop paddleing 👍
I haven't even bought a boat yet but I know I'm on these when I do 😂
The Pakayak is a great kayak. Have you seen the Trak 2.0? I have a few videos about it too. Take a look :)
@Fishaholicboy I've managed to find a suitable boat in the Seago Quebec, £200 with a dropstitch floor and 280kg capacity iIrc and being on a zero budget that is my best option at the moment. I like a couple of packrafts though as weights a lot lower and the Aquamarina halve. Scotlands a fun place but I don't want to get overburdened as a soloist.🤘🙂 But I'll take a looksies you know, just in case haha! Edit, aw crap I like it haha!
Still in beta testing it’s an absolute joke of a drone. But yeah. Don’t talk about the specs, most of them don’t work.
I’m sure they are working on firmware updates. Hopefully it will improve
@ I didn’t spend over £1000 for a drone that I have to beta test along with many if its other customers. It’s a dogshit product shamelessly protected by its paid influencers.
@@ModProjects4306 I believe your description is a far stretch for someone who doesn't own one. You're biased opinion does not align with those who actually own one [not "shamelessly" paid].
@ 😂😂😂 is that the best you have? Denial? I don’t believe you exist, but here we are.
Great review! Looks like a solid little drone. New SUB!
Thanks! Appreciate it
I have to go with the new lighter technology, wood looks great but why have a super lightweight kayak and a heavy paddle.
I suppose it all depends on the preference of the paddler.. I like to use a sturdier (heavier) paddle for rocky areas in case I need to push myself away from the rocks.. I wouldn’t do that with a light paddle
@@Fishaholicboy shouldn't use any paddle to push off rocks, however that doesn't stop me!
It uses a combination of GPS and downward sensors to navigate. This TH-cam video explains it well th-cam.com/video/cUpKUSotrxA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xdJpZYqhDip9UJ2G
Thanks for sharing! I will take a look at it
Always nice when you get one more "follower" 😂
I have a stalker! 😂😂
@Fishaholicboy 😂
Fantastic camera work 👏👏👏👏
All the credit goes to the drone :)
Dude where are you getting all these boats from? Lololol. She's a beauty
Haha.. I should’ve colour graded the Trak so it looks like 3 different kayaks 😂
@@Fishaholicboylololol!
The quality is pretty decent but damn that thing is loud!
It is loud.. I suppose all drones are pretty loud. Would be good if they made it more quiet!
Paint your paddles blue and wear flesh colored gloves you’ll be fine!
I will have to try that, thanks!
Thanks. I upgraded from X1 to the Pro specifically to use while SUPing. I could not get it to track me in Dolly mode -worked a little better in Follow mode. Landing did not work at all. I ended up having to grab it out of the air. It was a bit windy (~10mph) so I will try again in calmer weather. Thanks for your video review!
Hi! The Dolly mode is definitely more difficult to track. The follow mode works amazingly well. Hopefully it’ll work better next time you try it! I am still figuring out the best way to use the drone too.
I have an Hoverair X1 (first generation) and since I'm so disappointed with its video resolution, now I'm considering to go for a selfy-drone 4K, either the NEO or the HOVERAir X1 PRO. I find that the PRO Max is too expensive. Did you make a comparison between the Neo and the X1 Pro? Both are 4K. For better footage I use anyhow my DJI Mini 4K which I believe has got a better resolution than the 4K selfy-drones. I like the idea that the Hoverair Pro may be used over the waters. What do you think? Best regards, Daniele from Switzerland!!
Hello! I think the DJI Mini footage is top notch! I made a video of the DJI Neo on my channel but I haven’t put any footage side by side. After reviewing footage from both drones, the Hover Air X1 Pro/Max has better video quality than the Neo. The price point of the Neo is very attractive and the video quality is still very good. I got the Hover Air drone because of the Omni terrain mode as I wanted to use it for kayaking. Seems to be working fine so far!
Thank you for creating this content. Truly appreciate you taking the risk with this drone and kayaking. Happy New Year!
I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video! Happy new year!
great video... have you tried launching it from shore/dock and have it do a dronie or circle out over the water? i've been wondering if it would stay focused on you, or get confused over the water...
Yes, I have tried from a jetty and did the dronie mode. I didn't have any issues with it.
@@Fishaholicboy awesome.. thanks for the reply and videos...
Would you now agree the Trak is the BEST portable kayak... Period !
Haha I would have to agree!
@@Fishaholicboy And, the TRAK does not LEAK 😊
Well done, my friend. I've waited until significant bugfix updates to the firmware have been released. I have both a HoverAir X1 and X1 Smart, for land footage and DJI minis for GPS controlled, safe, over-water footage, using DJI ActiveTrack. Good to see you're enjoying your TRAK 2.0 after the long wait. I really need to add a red Akiak paddle myself.
I didn't use the Akiak for a while as I have the Ipik and the Kalleq. It was so nice using the Akiak again.. I missed it! I am sure you'll like it too!
Nice video, Chad! I think the software is solid and works well. For practical use, you could try tying a small string to the drone to keep it connected to you, and attaching a small floaty to make it fearless over open water. Additionally, consider spraying some waterproof protection on the drone to make it more water-resistant. Let’s go!
Haha you reminded me of dying a string on a dragonfly when I was young. The waterproof spray is definitely a good idea! Thanks!
These mini UAV's are interesting in their potential but as per Jonas I do wonder about the dependability in a water situation. Very cool tool for you to create interest for your viewers. My Akiak arrived yesterday. The Trak is spendy but ingeniously designed. It owes much to now defunct Feathercraft & Folbot.
I've seen the Feathercraft and Folbot only on TH-cam.. and yes, they look amazing! I hope you enjoy using the Akiak!
