Tokyo Photography and I HATE This Lens: Canon 50mm rf f/1.8

  • I love Tokyo and the photography here. But I am not a fan of the Canon 50mm RF f/1.8. It's slow and cheaply build. Does it take good pictures though?
This photography vlog from Tokyo, Japan wasn't meant to be a review about the Canon 50mm rf f/1.8 lens. However, I had really high expectations for it and thought it was going to be a great lens for street photography and urban work here in Japan. However, while out on the streets of Tokyo with the Canon 50mm rf lens I found myself frustrated with a couple things. Overall, I'm not too happy with it. But, thankfully Tokyo is such a photogenic place that even with a lens I struggled with, there were some good images to be had.

Very good video. I find these style videos are your best. Showing the actual travel component where we feel like we were on the plane and in the airports and moving around. Then you just walking around a city blabbing on about whatever. It's interesting and fun to feel as if we are all tagging along.

Great Video! I’ve never had an issue with the RF 50mm 1.8. Could be that I only use it on a newer body, but not sure.

Don’t forget to set the focus mode in your camera body to auto focus. It probably only focused manually because it was set to manual in the camera. You must do this for all Canon lenses that don’t have the manual to auto focus switch of the lens. The RF 50 mm 1.8 has the focus to control ring switch on the lens.

I recommend reading the camera manual. Also update the camera body and lens software. That will prevent you from having situations like this. I have a RF 50 mm 1.8 and the autofocus is fast and accurate. It has never failed for me.

I never had these issues with autofocus my RF 50mm 1.8. as you said.
I just put it on my R6 and it worked out of the box. No need for any special settings 🤔
As you said, maybe firmware or just a bad copy.
Also1: firmware updates with Canon are usually great with new features and lens compability these days.
Also2: I love panning shots and the 50 is queit a great focal length for this.

@@BrendanvanSon I agree with you, that Canon's lens strategy is the worst part about RF.
I so wanted access to better, more affordable glass. That' s why I left Canon. I still miss the handling, looks and menu system though.

@@danielhenzphotography It's funny you bring up the menu system. I switched from Canon to Sony a year ago, and I actually prefer the Sony Menu system better. I like that when I switch a setting in Sony, it will actually tell me why I cannot execute it because xyz is on, etc. Where Canon just changes other settings without saying anything and I have ended up shooting in modes I did not expect to be shooting in because of the "user error" of not knowing turning something on would turn xyz off automatically

Somethign very strange going on with your 50mm lens.
I have the 50mm f1.8 and it works great on my R5 and my R3. The autofocus is fast enough (not L fast, but knocks spots of my EF 50mm f1.4) and it's nice and sharp in the middle (corners are soft when wide open, but it's a budget lens).
I would suggest sending it back and swapping for a new one, as it's possible you have a faulty unit.
Or maybe switch to the 35mm for street photography?
Finally, the Canon RF system was released in October 2018, so it's not yet 6 years old, not 10 years old as you mention ;-)
However, despite the issues you had with your lens your images are banging as always. Love love love the panning shots!!

50mm was the wrong focal length all day long in Japan dude. Especially for the tight streets and crowded places - you can't fit enough in. When I went last year I took the 40mm for my Nikon Z FF. Even that was far too tight, so I ran into the nearest camera store I could find in Tokyo and bought the plastic fantastic Z28mm lens. Then my images really started to cut loose. I've booked for KL in a few weeks and I'm taking my 35mm prime and my professional Z 24-70 F2.8. I also have 5 weeks in New Zealand at year end and I'll definitely be taking the zoom and a couple of primes.

Japan is definitely on my bucket list but it always feels so distant and inaccessible. And I feel it's combination of the geographic distance but also culture and language. On a lens side - I didn't use 50 1.8 but I have 24 1.8 and they seem to be the same range of lenses - it's optical and mechanical rubbish. With the current canon lens offer it's either RF L series or adapted EF L. There's absolutely no reasonable glass in decent price on offer. I'm currently considering Sigma Art EF, there are AF issues but you get top quality optics and currently they are cheap especially second hand.

It’s not a canon lens thing, it’s a specific canon rf 50mm f1.8 lens thing. Due to the lens being too compact they don’t have a designated AF/MF switch on the side of lens like all other canon lenses, instead it has a control ring/focus switch on the side. Meaning you have to go in menu to switch between MF/AF instead of being able to flip that switch on the lens. Honestly the worst lens canon has, it’s cheap and cheerful but that’s about it. It’s great for casual shooting or entry level users. A way better but also slightly more expensive option is the rf 35mm, it’s tons sharper and has ibis. The 50mm 1.8 is soft in comparison, this is disregarding whether the camera body has ibis or not.

I don't mean to come across the wrong way, but whenever I hear a photographer complaining about wonky autofocus I have to chuckle. Having been a photographer for 60+ years, I still tend to shoot in manual mode rather than relying on the lens/camera to focus for me. Is it a problem for street photography? Not if you pre-focus and/or use zone focusing. It takes a bit of practice, but I prefer it to autofocus most of the time. Then again, I still shoot a lot of film on older, fully manual cameras so it's second nature to me. As with anything, practice makes perfect.
On another note, I agree with you on the 50mm f/1.8 STM lens (in fact I'm that way about most of the Canon STM lenses).
