- After a bit less than 2 years owning the RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM, I am doing my honest, humble little review just now. And it was fun crossing Palawan from East to West to reach one of the famous beach Near Puerto Princesa, Nagtabon Beach. You will see photos of differents styles of photography, pros and cons, a little video in 4k recorded with this lens, and more.

I just know that I have always been very lucky. 🍀

I love your humor.
@@MrNoipe thank you so much MrNoipe! 😀👍

Thank you so much for your comment Ken! 😀👍
Thanks for all of the great R7 coverage you have posted!
My pleasure! 😀
Thanks! That was a very helpful video and I loved the images!
I am glad you liked it, thanks for the nice comment!
Cheers! ✌️😀👍
J’ai cet objectif sur un r6 mk2 et c’est un combo incroyable surtout pour la photo d’action (sport mécanique et animaux).
Prix accessible et super matos. Clairement un objectif à avoir.
On est d'accord! 😁
Moi aussi je veux in R6 mark 2! 🤩
Merci pour le commentaires. 👍😀
Thanks!
@jacquesgiard6943 thank you so much Jacques! You are the first to use that "Super Thanks" button!
I will use the money to buy more gear so I can make more real life reviews.
And if one day I get enough money, I am thinking about opening a shelter for the street dogs of the Philippines or something like that.
Have a great day Jaques, cheers! ✌️😀👍
Thank you. Usefull video. Nice shots and videos.
Thank you! I really appreciate that kind of comment! 👍😀
@@Chrispitchwildlife I'm just in the process of choosing a lens for my new R5, and this choice is not easy given a tight budget after buying an expensive body) so all of the above is absolutely sincere)) Thank you again!
@@MrKotische alright! Keep in mind that the R5 will have less reach than my R7. So maybe you want an even longer focal length depending of what you shoot... Have a look at some reviews on the new RF 200-800. But you may lose some close up capabilities and it's 3x more expensive, heavier, bigger(I never tested it though)
Hard choices. 😁
Good luck!
Cheers!
@@Chrispitchwildlife Yes thank you! I know about the existence of this lens. And the features of full-frame cameras. The R5, however, has the ability to crop, thereby “bringing” the object closer, with very high detail. Unfortunately, due to circumstances (and some disgusting actions of the leaders of my country), we live here in quite difficult conditions, including financial ones. We have a very strange market. And for some reason RF 200-800 costs more than RF 100-500L. Surprisingly. Therefore, I am not sure that I will have the opportunity to purchase such expensive lenses for wildlife photography as the RF 100-500 and RF 200-800. The RF 100-400, RF 800 f11 and Sigma 150-600 C version were considered. Good luck. Peace.
@@Chrispitchwildlife the choice of R5 was not spontaneous. Having an old Canon 40D, I spent several months choosing a new camera. I wanted a full-frame one, knowing well all the features of certain options. We are the same age, more or less, I think) But the experience is not that great, but long-lasting) And I have no experience at all in wildlife photography. I'm currently using my old first generation 70-300 IS USM DSLR EF lens. And I see that this is clearly not enough. I want more. There is so little beauty in this world. I wish there was more. And what you want to capture beautifully.
What does a real landscape photographer mean. As far as Im concerned, you took landscapes so no need to downplay your skills
Thank you for your comment! 😀
That was the first time I used a telephoto lens to do landscape. Landscape is not something I do. So I guess, I meant: "what a guy with experience who did thousands of photos in this genre would have done here". "What composition would he have seen" etc.
I am very curious about it. 🧐
That said, I like the first picture I show with the layers.
Cheers! 😃
Beautiful video. I have been considering this lens vs. the older EF 100-400mm IS but you sold me on this with the great shots.
Camera gear reviews have become nerdy/professional to a point where even content from great photographers seem boring these days. Everyone is just focused on the spec sheet and their editing presets/workflows. But your video was funny, humorous and inspirational, while still covering all the technical bases. Great job!!
Thank you so much for your comment Bapun! What a cool comment! 😀
I like that lens and I am lucky that this video seems to work well.
I just made a similar video (that doesn't work well) with that lens mixed with the RF800f11. If you want to see more pics. 🙄
I could not speak about the EF100-400 since I never used it though.
Cheers! 👍😀
Superb review. Many thanks 🙏
Thank you so much for your comment Sir! 👍😀
Nice review Chris with some good photos 😁😁👍👍
Thank you so much for your comment Alan, always very appreciated! 😀
Chris - there is so much awesome here. Love the dragonflies, love the open with big motorcycle sound and then watching you ride by.... LOVE it. That really is a fantastic versatile lens. I am going to have to try that again. You have such fantastic shots. Oh, and that wasp - fantastic video!! You have motorbikes making noise, we have the regional airport! 🙏💖🤗
Thank you so much for your comment Jonny! 😀
Yes for that reasonable price, this lens offers a lot of fun.
I was not using it much since I got the RF 100-500mm. But it is still a lens to consider if you want to pack light.
Cheers! 😀✌️
@@Chrispitchwildlife The cost - so much easier than the 100-400 as well. Great lens and I forgot all about how awesome it was. 🤗💖
The best at this price. And on Amazon or B&H you have some good deals from time to time!
I saw it at around 500USD already. 😄
@@Chrispitchwildlife Great price for sure. It allows many to get into wildlife at an inexpensive price!
Great video 👌😁 I am getting new digital camera. Do you think the r8 will be better than r7?
@@oddballmedia thanks for the comment! 😀👍
Those are 2 very different cameras.
R8 is a 24MP full frame without IS (probably slightly better AF tracking)
R7 is a 32MP cropped sensors with IS. (More reach because of the cropped sensors)
I will advise you to find some comparison of the 2 in TH-cam before you buy.
Good luck! 🙂
Amazing
Thank you for your comment Mam! 😀
Great review, Bravo !
Thank you so much Mohamed! Really appreciated! 😀👍
Handheld focus stacking was very impressive. Great photos and a humorous ending. Well done!
Thank you very much ch Leon, I am glad you liked it! 😀
I wish that robber fly would have stayed longer so I could try a tripod, or the in body bracketing stuff.
Nice review!
Thank you so much Le o! ✌️😀
I’m going to play with my r7 and 1-400 this summer to see what I can get from it!
Hello Anthony, thank you for your comments! 😀
Alright, i hope you'll have fun! Me, I am thinking a lot about R5 since sometimes it is only 3000 us dollars. But I stay strong and wait what comes next. 😆
@@Chrispitchwildlife I have an r5 which I use a lot. I want to use the r7 more. Under the right conditions it can do very well.
@@RogerZoul yes, I know you have an R5, I checked all your comment before I answered. 😀
Me, I have 3 APSC cameras, I just made the mistake to by the X-T30 II, because it's so small cute! 😂
So now I am thinking:"would it be a good idea to have a big fat and solid full frame , like the R5..."
Or just the R8.
So I would have a camera that can handle better high ISO with a slightly better IQ and better low light performance, or is it not worth it... I don't know!!
@@Chrispitchwildlife For me, that R8
battery is a problem because i have so many
r5 batteries. But a buddy of mine who has an R5 also recently bought an r8. He loves
it for the size and better AF, and for the better
low light performance. His says you need at least two batteries and maybe 4 (he shoots a lot of birds) and obviously the buffer is an issue. But it can do any job you ask of it, just not for very long. Since you like small, it
may be right up your alley ! Good luck and keep making videos!!
@@RogerZoul alright, thank you Anthony!
I always forget about the smaller battery...
I will at least wait to see some reviews about the future R5 mark 2 before taking a decision. 👍
Cheers!
Amazing
Thank u Regie! 😀
Using R7 apsc camera is advantageous with this lens
Yes, it's like shooting with a 600mm on a full frame. But with that comes other little problems related to the R7. A bit harder to focus in low light, a bit more noise, a bit more rolling shutter if you use electronic shutter etc.
Thanks for the comment Hector! ✌️
Hi, I m looking for this 100-400 but I m not sure that could be a great inprove from my sigma 18-300 in my canon R10 (with adapter). For you RF lens could be better in 100-300 range?
Ah thank you. That's an easy question.
The RF100-300 mm F2.8 L IS USM. Only 9'500 US dollar. 😁
But if you want cheaper, you will have to watch more reviews. The perfect lens don't exist. Some are sharper, some have a better IS, some have a bigger focal length, and some, like your Sigma have a super wide focal range with a reasonable aperture.
It all depends on what you do the most and what you need the most.
I own only the RF100-400 and the RF100-500 which is actually the best.
My best advise is that you watch more and more reviews from Christopher Frost and Dustin Abbott.
And if you can, you go in a shop and try/rent if you can.
Good luck Enrico! ✌️🙂
BROTHER....I WANT TO BUY A CAMERA FOR WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY.....WAS LOOKING FOR CANON EOS R10...CAN U PLEASE TELL IF IT WILL DO THE JOB OR I WILL GO FOR SONY
Hello, in my opinion (beginner) the camera do the job but: the lens is more important. A 2.8 or 4.0 F made the difference. I'm in Kruger now and I m happy with sigma18-300 3.5-6.3, but a L series 100-400 or 100-500 I think could be a better choice when is cloudy.
@@maheshsahu-yj6xj hi, thanks for the comment. I never tried the R10, but I think it can be a good first camera for wildlife.
But if you go in a forest you will have to bring a few more batteries, because they are smaller and die faster.
Good luck! 🙂✌️
ouch what happened to the front barrel
Thank you for your comment! 😀
What do you mean? 🤔
@@Chrispitchwildlife things around the filter size printed at the front of the element
Yep, I noticed that a few months ago. Could have been there since I bought it. I can not clean it. It's like the plastic was rubbed a bit. 🧐
The opposition have him worked out, he aint changing ...so the tactics from 19 other managers is sit back, soak what comes then break.
Yeahhhh! Thank you so much for your comment! 😀
Is it good on full frame r8 in low light conditions? I shoot at night mainly?
@@HectorHAli I don't own a full frame Hector. But F5.6 to F8 is very dark I am afraid.
You will need a tripod and non moving subjects I guess. Or a powerful torch.
Good luck Hector!
Thanks for the comment. ✌️🙂
Here a list of lenses:
snapshot.canon-asia.com/ph/article/eng/key-specifications-of-rf-lenses?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw1920BhA3EiwAJT3lSbIXHb4dMPzU21umdqhOMVlK06dDZRWa8vzlWS0oASpX2W2tPS8H3xoCl5gQAvD_BwE
You’ll probably be better off with an f/2.8 or faster lens for low light shooting.
@@Chrispitchwildlife thanks a lot. The link is very helpful. Appreciate the info 👍👍👍
@@HectorHAli I hope you'll find the best for you. I guess you have to look for lower F numbers like F2.8, F2, F1.8, F1.4 etc... (bigger aperture), but for telephoto the price gets higher as well usually. Good luck! 👍
Ah no the dust pump returns in RF form! Internal zoom FTW. This... not so good long-term.
Thank you so much for your comment Thegorn.
Yes, internal zooms are in theory a bit more dust resistant, and also heavier, bigger, more expensive. (In theory)✌️
I have my RF100-400mm since 2 years. I'll tell you in 5 years if a notice a dust problem, and how I'll fix it.
Cheers! 😄
what camera ?
Thank you so much for you comment Nik! 😀
Canon R7
LOL, Plan A(NGE) isnt going to win anything...He has failed at all the high levels he has been at.He is ok at MickeyMouse stuff but is that what SpursY fans want,,,A league cRup(the crap cup)...The bloke doesn't coach to defend the goal...its go down and have a shot, then the counter comes and pressure on inadequate defence gets caught out.
I am so glad you decided to comment about things on my channel Sir Palane!
Thank you! ♥️
