    I stumbled on this video by pure happenstance...i just heard pretty pimpin on the radio and i wanted to show my buddy the video, then he asks me if kurts got any other cool music, just happen to pick this one maybe because of the title ? who knows. so i start watching it and i immediately recognized where all of this footage was from ! it's circa 71-73 ish mostly all filmed at a so cal beach by the name of topanga point, just north of santa monica. at the time, this spot was very private and very local and the residents didn't take kindly to strangers hence if you didn't know anyone who didn't live there or weren't invited to surf there by a resident, you weren't getting in. i was friends with a kid who's in some of this footage and i recognize many of the people shown here, some of them i knew very well. some are not here any longer. there is also footage from santa monica canyon which is south of topanga. i was the same age as most of the youngsters, we all looked the same back then, surf/skate rats with long blond hair (that's actually me sitting with a group of girls at 4:37 i'm in the red striped shirt). seeing all of our young faces is very strange, like being in a time a capsule. it was a very magical time. all any of us wanted to do or really cared about was surfing, skating and partying as shown in the footage. soon after this was filmed the state evicted all of the residences from topanga point. all the houses were torn down and today it's a state beach open to the public which is good i guess. but seeing this footage really brings me back to a time in my life that i'll never forget. i have no idea how or why kurt picked this footage for this song but i think he made a very good choice, thanks kurt!

    the point of euphoria with his music, for me, comes when you realize he can fixate on a melody and explore it with different strings with different textures. it'll be the same chords and pattern but it's like he looks at it from 50 different angles and takes you through every iteration of that theme.

    this song played, a lot, over Labour Day weekend, as my old dog became paralysed in old age, and we waited for Tuesday and the Vet's final visit. No direct lyrical connection. But the melancholy sound made time go 'bassackwards' as I recalled the 15 years of changes he had helped me through. I will always think of Boz when I hear this

    • @FIGGY65
      @FIGGY65 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stuart, your comments made me melancholy too... I’ve known of this song for awhile but hadn’t ever seen this video until this moment. I was thinking the sweet pups and cat, and probably some of the people, have long passed. I lost my 84 year old Dad to dementia last May, then my best buddy Rocky ( 10 year old Newfie Black lab mix) to a stomach tumor in August…To this day I hear him breathing comfortably at night as I sleep, and his nails clicking on the wood floors…plus I dream he kisses my face as I sleep. A coworker told me, “Hey, your Dad called him home to keep him company.”
      I was pretty taken aback by that…A neighbor (a very cool hippie like woman) told me that like humans, an animal’s spirit ( the animals with emotion intelligence) NEVER dies;It simply cannot, and the spirit lives openly within us….Another fellow whom with I chatted said when we all pass, we are going to see all of our beloved human and animal friends in the setting similar of “a beautiful stream on a grassy path” where we will all be in our peak of health , happy, and enjoying each other’s company in a perpetual state of joy….like being on vacation at the lake…..I miss my beloved ones often, but they are my guardian angels for the time being, until I get to see them again. May you have comfort and peace too my friend….Be well, Shawn in California 🙏🏻🤙🏼😎

      @@FIGGY65 thank you Shawn. Your dream of Rocky kissing your face as you sleep, cut deep. I slept on the floor beside Boz on what was his last night on Earth. At one point in the night I woke with a start, or felt I did, to see Boz sitting up and looking down into my face. He was paralyzed by then and incapable of sitting up. But I felt he was. He saw me through the breakdown of my marriage, divorce, healing, and eventual move cross country to a new life. All with such a calm grace, and giving me a purpose to move on. I sure ly hope to see him again.

    Your music gives me hope. Recall just this evening when an unknown man smashed in our windows due to a Heroin addiction my partner had that I wasn’t aware of. Why? Because he led me to believe everyone else was wrong. I recall standing alone with an extreme threat as a guy smashed our windows and I I said ‘what in gods name do you think you’re doing’ even as he stood with his hammer through the window he looked startled at my response. Me. A weak disabled woman. Where does our strength come from at times like that I’ll never know

    Kurt Vile is single handedly saving Rock n Roll for an Entire generation.... His melodies, overlays, progressions and arrangements are as legendary as the all time rock n roll greats. Bassackwards is easily a song that could have been on The Beatles Sargent Peppers or Magical Mystery Tour albums.... KV is going where The Beatles could have gone.......or it could be Lou Reed, or Tom Petty.. These guys are not dead, they are alive inside of Kurt Vile. PURE GENIUS.

      As a fan of all the bands you just mentioned I would have to disagree with you. I appreciate how much you like Kurt but he's not on the same level as The Beatles. Maybe the others, okay. But to say he's single handedly saving rock is a strong statement. I'd say more opinion rather than fact. There are lots of good bands still putting out Rock. You just have to look a little deeper. Of course this is just my own opinion. Have a good day

    One of the things I love most about KV is his use of repetition. And I mean that in a positive way. Sometimes it sounds like acoustic loops. The War on Drugs sometimes do the same.....and yes I do know the connection.
    I don’t like to use the word ‘genius’ very often as it’s so often misused but I think KV deserves the title.
