To think, last year, most of us were thinking they were just gonna port Smash Wii U, and 3DS' content with a modest amount of additional content. We were thinking they were gonna give the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe treatment for Smash on the Switch. Then we got the ultimate "hold my beer" moment. Yes, that pun was very much intended, and I regret nothing.

I wasn't convinced to buy the game even despite seeing lots of information on the games upsides, seeing a lot of gameplay, and hearing people that have similar taste in games recommend it to me, but then I got to sit down at a friends house and actually played the game. The experience I got, even in the span of about 2 hours, was enough to inspire me to purchase the game, and I've not put it down since I got it. It has flaws, mainly the dungeons, but going out and exploring, looking for those dungeons and marking them on my map, experiencing the game in it's most raw state, spoke volumes to me about how good the game itself genuinely is.
I don't normally say this, in any context, but if you've not played the game, then I don't think you can say *that* much on the state of the games quality. If you have, and you still say it's terrible, that's your opinion. But to downplay the massive triumphs BOTW takes, is inherently facetious.
Hearing Arlo talking about how Sakurai wants Competitive Ultimate to be on par with Melee almost sounded like “Sakurai wants to Melee to finally die.”
I mean, if you think about it, Sakurai has poured so much of his life and soul into the games that came after Melee, yet neither of them came close to the colossal, looming legacy that Melee had upon the competitive scene. Not only is SSBM played to this day, but every time fans mod the later games, it's always got some factor of 'how can we make this more Melee?' Now, as wonderful as it might seem to have created a game with Melee's staying power and legacy, having all these years of seeing the cracks and flaws come to light, could probably make you wonder if your career peaked with the release of a 16yr-old product, that the competitive scene for which seems more interested in breaking your work, rather than playing it.
I think smash 4’s competitive is better than Melee, people will not let melee die.
Honestly, I want melee to die already. I don't like the rabid fans who keep saying that it's the best smash game. It's buggy. Lifeless. Give it up.
If anything Sakurai wants to make a complete balance. It's been gone over many times. A sort of fighter that's very easy to pick up and you can put some time in to get better as you go. Always been more about having fun than competitive stuff more or less
I love Melee, it's a fond memory for me and I will always enjoy playing it on occasion for nostalgia.
But, yeah. The competitive scene for Melee needs to move on. The game is old, unbalanced, competitive options are super limited, and it's kinda buggy.
It's a fun game for a trip down memory lane for sure, but competitive wise the Smash community needs to evolve.

Fire Emblem fans were asking for Chrom. I personally do not care at all for him, but am happy that at least those fans are happy.
Well, some Fire Emblem fans were asking for him. I'm a die-hard FE fan, and I like Chrom as a character, but I never understood people wanting him so bad in Smash. While I'm not against him being present, I was just surprised that he wasn't an alternate costume for Lucina at most. It just seems weird to get another Awakening rep when there are plenty of FE games to pick characters from, especially when there are non-sword-wielding characters in the games as well. I'd personally have preferred a rep that uses a spear, axe, or beast stone.

I’m just gonna put this out there but Japanese Twitter went insane when Chrom got announced. I believe he was the most hyped character revealed along side maybe Simon. Plus western fire emblem fans wanted him too so there that. But his popularity in Japan is definitely a thing and was probably the biggest contributing factor I’d say.
Plus it’s cool that he’s a mixed echo fighter with both Ike and Roy moves. He’s going to be fun to play.

Incidentally, the Wii U Smash Bros. only gave you the option to do "Omega" versions of each stage, i.e. Final Destination versions of them. They added Battlefield versions to this game because, well, from what I can tell, because people said that Battlefield is a better competitive stage than Final Destination (something about FD having no platforms giving certain characters an advantage over others or whatever). It's so surreal to think that Sakurai listened to such specific requests and implemented them.
Yeah, he's really been going all out with making changes to the game specifically caterered towards the competitive community. Really a far cry from his attitude in the Brawl days, good on him.
But battlefield gives HEAVY advantages for combo characters like Mario oder ZSS, also for swordsman like Marth oder Cloud

Waluigi was an assist trophy in 4, so they already had a baseline to work with, and it would have been easy to have it in a previous test version, which they then showed footage from, to throw everybody off.
I'm not saying it WILL happen, but we all know how much of a troll Sakurai is, and I love that.

You kind of glossed over the Belmonts there. Yeah, Simon felt inevitable but Richter is only known among Castlevania fans. He is an extremely popular character among the fan base but anyone else has no idea who he even is, but they added him anyways because Castlevania fans love him.

"That music mode might not have even sold one person on the game!" Uh, Arlo? It'll sell ME if it has a proper endless loop mode. That's a lot of music for $60. And it'll likely sell me a system since I'll need a system so that I'm not taking up my fiance's system when I'm out and about. I pour my heart out looking for music players that play ripped music exactly the way it did in game, intro + loop forever. And all without having to craft a 2 hour long MP3 file which just wastes space.

Banjo Kazooie represent the big friendship between Nintendo and Microsoft. And he is heavily requestet by many fans. If they want one Character to representing Microsoft, Banjo Kazooie is the most obvious and perfect choice. Showing the good relationship between both companies by finally bringing those two Characters home.

I see where you're coming from with Banjo & Kazooie but the thing is that they're HIGHLY requested. Sakurai is jampacking Ultimate with as much fanservice as possible, and I'm certain that Banjo & Kazooie were somewhere in the top 15 or top 10 in the Ballot. Plus, Microsoft execs have stated before they are willing to let Banjo appear in Smash, and Sakurai even considered him for Melee.
I really think Banjo & Kazooie has a good chance.

What do you mean it's not like DK has had that many games? More than Metroid that's for sure. And King K.Rool was the main villain in 4 big Nintendo Nintendo games (DKC 1, 2 and 3 as well as DK64) was the main villain of the weird Donkey Kong CG cartoon as well as a lot of other appearances. I think you are understating his importance a bit.
Last time K Rool appeared in a game was like a decade ago.
King K. Rool is about a hundred times more relevant than Ice Climbers, Duck Hunt, or Mr. Game & Watch were when they were added.

2:19-If you remember the images before the K.Rool reveal, they showed the main characters of each franchise fighting the villain of that series. It made sense to put K.Rool in as DK didnt have a single villain. Dark Samus I agree with. But Ridley is an inconic memorable villain from a bunch of Metroids such that it makes him one of the default villains.

Not really, picked it up because of all the hype for him in smash and it wasn't not as good as people say.
This is why it PISSES ME OFF when my friends say: "Oh Waluigi isn't in the game so it's ruined for me!" We're lucky to even be getting a smash game this year with this much variety, chacacters, stages, modes, and care put into it.

many people say that if they could do it with snake they can do it for pretty much everyone but you have to remember that hideo kojima himself asked sakurai for him to be included just because his daughter is a great fan of the smash series and wanted snake to be playable.
unless dinsey and all the owners of banjo ask sakurai for them to be included... well... It's really unlikely for them to be in the game, that's the issue with third parties.
also most third parties we've seen are from companies that have a strong alliance with nintendo like sega and namco.
a little fact that no one is seem to consider is that namco bandai owns the rights for most anime games, including dragon ball and namco bandai is in fact, helping to make smash.
if you see it this way, goku has more chances to get in smash than banjo or sora.

Guys the likes of conker and banjo can't get in becuz rare was bought out by microsoft (which made xbox.) So sorry guys banjo can't get in. And no banjo is only owned by microsoft. Big companies rarely share a product and xbox being owned by microsoft which makes their own game consoles wouldn't really want to share a character they bought out from nintendo even though rare was partners with nintendo. This comment isn't to anger anyone it is just to inform you so your dreams can't get crushed.
My big 3 newcomers since like forever are Rayman, Banjo and Shadow (only the last one being likely, the rest probably not happening). I'd love Banjo to get in, but as it stands we'll get like 3 original characters at best (with another 5 Echoes if we're *really* stretching it - which I find unlikely, considering we'll probably get 1 more Direct and maybe a 50 fact Extravaganza, i.e. not enough time to reveal that many characters) and since there is no indication that leads us to believe these characters will be incoming, I'll be sulking in a corner with my Banjo plush.
And no, licensing is NOT an issue. Phil Spencer (Microsoft's Xbox head) has mentioned several times that he wouldn't mind Banjo being used, he's completely open to it. Microsoft buying Rare has nothing to do with it. Granted, we don't know the whole story, when making the deal with Nintendo he could also be like "1 Million in cash or Banjo isn't allowed to be used", but he's definitely not against it simply to let Banjo rot in a lonely place.

This is why I hope Masahiro Sakurai somehow could have a role in how Nintendo works in general with its software. It is not only the individual Nintendo developers that are to blame for the lack of options and customizations. You can see this in everything from the Eshop down to control schemes. Even if Nintendo, in my opinion, seem to have loosen up a little since after the Wii U there is still a stubbornness to jam in unnecessary restrictions on a variety of levels. But Sakurai have such a status now that I think he can do pretty much what he thinks is good for the game and for the fans :)
Here’s an idea for an option for future smash games, one I came up with before Ridley was announced: include “boss characters” as a separate class of playable character. Basically, large, slow, overpowered characters that are “too big” to be typical smash characters. Perfect for 3-on-one battles against your friends, or even 1-on-one battles against your little brother if you want to boast that “I can beat you even if you’re playing as a boss character”. Characters like Metal Face, various legendary Pokémon, LoZ/LttP Ganon, a Metal Gear, DJ Octavio, Porky/Pokey in his spider-mech thing, even Master Hand.
Who I really hope for is Bandana Waddle Dee. I feel that if Metroid is getting four characters, then Kirby should get four, too.

I think you are underestimating the importance of simon belmont, you didn't even mention Richter that is the character i'm more excited for. Every third party character is a pleasant surprise. They require a lot of back and forth with the respective company, even if we are now kind of used to them, they are still a huge deal. Even if they are legacy characters, the castlevania series i would argue that is even more dead than banjo kazooie. It hasn't any presence outside of the netflix series and pachinko machines.
To castlevania fans such as myself this is huuuuge and i can't wait to play as them in their stage.

Richter is so underrated especially since people know Simon as the main protagonist as Castlevania, he has one of the best Castlevania games and the second best line next to Dracula's but I'm happy he made the cut, I would have preferred Alucard tho but I'm glad he's got his own spotlight as an assist trophy

The inclusion of Richter for me is like the inlcusion of cloud for many other people. One of my favorite characters from two of my favorite games.

This last direct was really great, but one of the sweetest things about the character reveals for me- beyond of course the "WHAAAAAAT?! YEEEEEESSSSSS!" factor- for me is how it's encouraging me to go back and play or replay games I never got around to.
Never played old school Donkey Kong Country, but now I want to. I think I played one Castlevania on the DS and somehow never touched another; now I want to. It's been years since I touched the Prime games, but because of Dark Samus.... yeah you get the picture. As fun as characters can be knowing nothing about them, becoming fans of them and their franchise just really helps make it so much satisfying, and I want to be as ready as possible for ALL these guys come Smash's release.
Also, while I'm of the 'I'd be fine if no one else came' camp.... still hoping for Skull Kid for Smash, amongst others. :)
Funny enough, something like that happened to me as a child when my parents got Melee for us. I discovered Zelda, Metroid, even F-Zero! I think it's part of the magic of these games.

That's why I love the Smash series. It's not just the game, it's the games it gets you to play. When I was a kid, all I knew was Mario, Pokemon, Donkey Kong and Sonic, but as soon as me and my friends popped Brawl into the Wii, we discovered the outer gaming universe. Now I'm a massive fan of games like Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Metal Gear Solid, etc, all because of Smash.
