An outlaw song played on outlaw pipes to honor the death of a man who knew it was illegal to carry that sword into battle against his English overlords, but did it anyway. Who knew he had small chance of victory that day, but watching his family be raped, beaten, tortured, and slowly starved to death was more than he could bear. Music, bagpipes and harps, weapons, and eventually the wearing of the clan tartan itself was all made illegal by the English. Prima nocti, or first night was an old concept that made it legal for a lord of that area to have sexual access to any bride in his holdings, in the belief that if we can't kill them outright, we can breed them out using their own brides as the vessel of subjugation. It was a means to demoralize and divide as well since the groom blamed himself for not doing something, and the bride did too. But subconsciously since neither could resist, but blamed it on the groom equally, rather than just the lord himself. If she bore a child from the union, whether it was the English Lord's child or not, it was a constant reminder of the incident. Amazing how tyrants use unjust laws to demoralize and subjugate the people they lay claim to as property to be used however they please. The question becomes....Who wouldn't stand up to that nightmare? Makes you go hmmm?
Very very very few musicians can perform live anywhere at anytime and sound AMAZING not to mention no machines changing the voice and music and no lip singing. He’s one of a great kind!
@@tuckdaman1185 I'll answer for her. The song is kind of haunting, to begin with, because of the way he draws a line in the sand about being a country boy. In other words, very bad things could happen on this earth but a country boy can deal with it because of what he knows and what is instilled in him. In other words ... other people might now survive the same things. Think about that. Second, he's singing this "live" to a mostly urban audience in New York City, which is a direct contrast to where a country boy comes from, and he makes that point in the song with his "friend from New York City" reference. Third, the tone of the song is low and haunting starting out and in my opinion almost sounds foreboding. Then it gets big, really big, like a declaration. Finally, Hank is on a stool pulled away from the band and right in front of the audience ... with sunglasses. It's like he's alone, on an island, and he's totally cool with that, because ... well, you know the rest. Epic.

I love Hank Jr. His Daddy Hank Sr was great. I love the fact Hank Jr stepped out of the big shadow of his fathers greatness and carved out his very own greatness. And he did it his way.

Heck and he even showed up SOBER! Every time I went to see him play.... he was a No-Show cause he was hung over from the night before! One thing about Hank tho.... you just can't beat his music! He's a Legend!!!!!
Why is it southern folks always talking about NYC folk? We're all Americans if you think that ppl in the city can't hunt fish work protect their family then your all sadly mistaken. A lot men and women from new York city have fought for our country too. Great song hank from a Brooklyn boy
This performance was a message to the yuppies sitting in front of him.
I think this is the best version I’ve ever heard! He put himself into this performance for sure.
Totally agree
Check out the version from the us festival
Statement performance. He knew where he was and who he was singing to. Hank gave early-80s NY the full monty ... southern fried.
I like this one, but check out his "Hee-Haw" version... That's my favorite, yet they are pretty close.
His best performance of this song ever. If you ain’t in to that we don’t give a damn...
Probably the most powerful country song ever written and sung.
When you can sound this good with all but a dry guitar, and your voice...you are a real star.
this is the attitude that will save this country.
