The old video on the siege of Rhodes is what got me hooked on this channel, so happy to see it again. Also this siege really shows the ingenuity of Demetrios. Even though he ultimately did not succeed, he deserved the name Poliorketes.
Well given a few more months he probably would have defeated the Rhodians. Also, this is really one of the most harduous thing to do in ancient warfare, besieging a large city and actually winning. It took months to Alexander to capture Halicarnassus and Tyre, and Rhodes was far larger than both. It truly was a monumental enterprise, and only the daring mind of Demetrios could entertain the idea and then actually do it.
@@praiza1481had the coalition not supplied Rhodes, the city certainly would have fallen. Also Demetrios gets far less credit than he deserves. Being able to recover from the disaster at Ipsos to become the king of the Makedonians is still mind blowing to me. Because of him, it was the Antigonid dynasty, not the Antipatrids, that would rule Makedon.

Alexander on his deathbed:alright guys I am beating it for good. Do whatever the fuck you want. His generals:whatever the fuck we want? War it is then.
The Rhodians were badass. I forget which one but their last fight as an autonomous polity was against either Brutus or Cassius, and it was pretty impressive seeing as they were a shadow of their former strength and yet still able to muster resistance against the Romans.
this is such an amazingly interesting period - we only ever seem to hear of alexander then cut straight to the romans. Whilst great in their own respects, I was hoping for many years we would see more of this period and great leaders.
