Love these lesser known stories of peoples travels pre-industrialization. Always amazes me that they could survive and the people and good will they find along the way.

I have been Wiki diving the Bavarian origins this week. There are some strange knowledge gaps on the 2nd hand sources I am curious if they are leaving out something from a first hand source. Apparently they came from the same tribe who founded Portugal after the Roman collapse but there is little detail on how they migrated back into Bavaria or how researchers linked two distinct groups across Europe to the same culture.
I didn't know that. Damn. He fought along people that he was sent to fight for like 30 years...And he did managed to come back and write these memoirs too!
Reminds me of that one Korean conscript in the Imperial Japanese army who was captured by the Soviets and conscripted into the Red Army, then captured by the Germans and conscripted into the Wehrmacht before finally being captured by Americans landing on D-Day and being taken to a POW camp in the US. He ended up staying in the US for the rest of his life. That was all in the span of no more than 5-6 years though.

They also traveled deep into Asia and described Bukhara or Samarkand.

That's actually why Mamluks had to be imported from so far away. It's also one major reason behind the decline of the Mamluks - it became incredibly hard to find recruits for their ranks as Central Asia converted into Islam. The Ottomans didn't have this problem because they sat right next door to Christendom.
No Kipchaks were Christian before Islam. They converted only in the 14-15th Centuries after Uzbek khan of Golden Horde. Those who didn't convert stayed as Cossacks and Armeno Kipchaks (Kipchaks with Gregorian Faith) , those who converted became modern Kazakhs and Tatars

Not just that but he made it back to Germany after decades. I wonder if he was famous in his town or if he was renown after getting back. What did his family say? did they care?

I've always been intrigued by the world of the middle ages. In my opinion, medieval times is the most exciting period in human history.

Dude Germanic Goths left Crimea after facing Hunns in 4th century, 1000 year before his journey ffs.

That was worded poorly by us. He got to Egypt on his own, but his book describes both his travels and the battles of Bayezid.
