  • Today I'm attempting to fix a leak I have in my TH350 transmission. The leak is coming from the speedo cable bullet and drive gear. If you would like to support this project, I have created an Amazon Wish List. Any contributions will be greatly appreciated.

Pretty common problem Dave. You can probably get the new seals at your local GM parts department. Ofcourse because they are a dealer, they will have to charge you way to much for them. Also once you get the car driving on the road. Check your speedometer accuracy with a speed ap on your phone. If your car's speedometer doesn't match your phone. You can change your speedo gear up or down. Each tooth equals 5mph. Depending on whether you need more teeth or less teeth. If memory serves me correctly, the gm gears range in size from 18 teeth to 22 or 24 teeth. Changing rear end gears and tire and wheels sizes, will all change your speedo mph. Good luck

Hey Dave. You sure lucked out on your Ram. Close the hood and the snow came down. We got a little over 10 INCHES of snow. My lawn tractor in still out, covered in snow. I was doing some yard work the other day and then we had company from Bev's family drop in and I never got around to getting the tractor in the garage. I guess I will have to dig it out before it freezes solid. That might make an interesting video. Thanks for sharing.🍁👍👍🔥

Wow snow on the ground, glad to see you back on the hot rod, and the truck ready for the winter, the Speedo cable is a known leaking spot on many transmissions. Awesome video Dave 👍👊🏼✌️

Cool video, I've never had a speedo gear out. Now I at least know what it looks like. ✌

Surprised they would not supply a new seal and O-ring with the drive... pretty silly of them to not look to have the best result possible for the customer. Great to beat the snow Dave ! The only thing worse than wrenching in the snow. is wrenching in slush... that is a joy reserved mostly for us on the coast !

get a 10 mm deep socket and drive the rear seal of the bullitt. tap it in so it seals around the speedo gear goes a little deeper that will stop the leek.

Good morning Dave. I've heard great things about Joe's transmission in Niagara Falls. I know it's an hour or so but maybe a nice trip if it was a nice day. Smokin'Joe Bonaferro(sp?) was(is?) big in drag racing I believe.

Dave, I would hate for something to happen, you should shove a pair of jack stands under the frame. I have heard too many horror stories of cars falling off jacks.

I did, but thanks for caring.

Nice, my question is why didn't I see jack stands holding that car up
? I know from experience that floor jacks fail, and the car hurts when it lands on you. Safty first!

You must have blinked when the video was in fast forward. I always use stands. Look to the left of the jack.

Hey Dave, Well the weather held out just long enough for you to get the ole pickup fixed. Thank god for you. You should be able to buy a new o-ring (seal) for that sending unit without having to replace the whole unit. You probably know this but in case you don't, and you have to buy a new speedometer sending unit, make sure to buy one that has the same number of teeth as the one you have. That's how you change your speedometer ratio if you were to change your rear end ratio (of coarse you have to change the gear on the tail shaft to match also). I just looked and RockAuto here in the states has the full piece you need for $9.90, just so you know. Hope this helps - Later

Could probably pick up a seal at a transmission repair shop. Or maybe a GM dealer.

Looked like the little seal had a part number on it, might be obtainable.

Postage would cost more than just getting a new bullet probably.

i think that it will still leak till you hook up the speedometer cable the swirls in the plastic piece swirls the fluid back into transmission and the cable housing stops the leak!!!!

    Where is the speedometer cable?

    • @ScottRods
      @ScottRods  ปีที่แล้ว

I didn't have a working speedo guage at that time, so the cable was just tucked underneath.

If you don’t plan on using that gear, you can tap and plug it👍🏻
