You said the magical word; "Goofy". Madonna has been goofy all of her life!!! She's always said that sometimes people take the things she says too seriously. The woman has a very special sense of humour, very tongue-in-cheek, very sarcastic. I think if she had chosen to make comedy movies instead of drama her story on cinema would have been different. I love the Goofy Madonna.

I adore her when she’s being sarcastic. I’m that way myself, and always make jokes of everything. But so many people don’t get it. I think it’s also cause she’s surrounded by a lot of Queens who share her humour too.

Kurt Loder was the head of Music News at MTV. He had originally been critical and unimpressed with Madonna. So she zeroed in on him. Won him over. They were very tight on the day. He got many exclusives (like this) and she in turn got great support kid gloves from him and MTV.

Also there will never be an era of the “big video” Yep💯💯 it’s about touching people, that what makes a star. I def remember watching this on MTV in 8th grade when it aired. Watching it now, it's great how they work every track from Bedtime Stories into the special (loved you grooving to every song!), as like a great sales pitch for the album, which was already doing well - but Take A Bow was such a phenomenon at the time, even doing better than lead single Secret on the charts here, which didn't usually happen. I bet this special helped a lot!

Bedtime Stories is her 6th full length album excluding I'm Breathless: Music From And Inspired By Dick Tracy which to most people is considered a soundtrack album.
Her Erotica era looks and Bedtime Stories era looks to me seem different and distinct from each other. Although there were some classic looks in the Erotica and Deeper And Deeper music videos but for the most part the Erotica era looks were sleek and sharp while the Bedtime Stories era looks were much more softer excluding the Human Nature music video looks.
I don't consider Live To Tell a romantic song. To me it's a deep, soul searching and soul searing and poignant song.
Her mother was 30 when she passed away.
The beef was started by Janet when she was asked about what she thought about Madonna and JJ said that what she does has class whereas she didn't think that what Madonna did is trashy and crass and that she didn't have anything nice to say about her. And it was rumored that when MJ and Madonna were hanging out to try to collaborate on his song and music video for In The Closet it was said that Madonna talked bad about JJ and that's why JJ may have been pissed and said what she said in the interview.
Although I agree with her about touching people by singing from the heart, I still would like to hear her develop her vocal skills again like she did for Evita and Ray Of Light and really hear her belt and sing her heart out.

💋🐂 I love this special so much. Kurt pushes the nerd-perv humour a little much, but she parleys it with perfect charm. I can see Kurt looking like a misfit in the pop reporter role to someone outside of 90s culture because now people are matched to the style they’re reporting on more. Then, because he was senior at MTV, he’d report on acts across genres and his generally unimpressed, droll but intelligent and insightful interview mode was the exact mood of the era. The 90s was all about being dry and cool and only expressing enthusiasm with a heavy dose of wryness. It was the end of an epic century, and that lent the culture a sort of exhausted glamour. A very similar mood characterised the end of the 19th Century too. The term is “fin de siecle”, French for “end of century”.
I love Madonna’s sass in this special too. Especially her response to Janet doing a typical low key puritanical diss of Madonna when she essentially said that “I do sexy with more class”, implying Madonna was common or too overt for her Jehovah’s Witness tastes. Madonna’s elegant response “Rather transparent, wouldn’t you say…” calling out Janet’s attempt to hop on Madonna’s S&M inspired sexy bandwagon while also distancing herself from any real commitment to the actual culture of sexual freedom. I love a lot of Janet’s stuff, and grew up worshipping Michael, but their capitalising on the image of sex while being so morally opposed to sexual freedom, let alone any real inference of queerness, has always rubbed me the wrong way.
This kind of leads me to reiterating my strong disagree on her being sorry about the Erotica era. There’s a huge difference between having a traumatic time while doing something brave that you believe in, then pivoting to other interests because she felt boxed in by public perception, and feeling SORRY she did the Erotica era. I think she’s proud of the Erotica era, but just doesn’t want to be pinned down or limited to that public perception. Being shrewd (and she’s the shrewdest) isn’t the same as having regrets. Interesting that while Bedtime Stories is considered a strong album for her, it’s Erotica that has received its retrospective dues as a truly groundbreaking album, and is almost always listed as one of her essential records. I don’t think it’s Madonna’s fault that people couldn’t concentrate on the quality of the music on Erotica. I think it’s the fault of the immaturity and underlying puritan values of a mainstream public who get so distracted my sexual display that they can’t think straight. Or maybe they think too damn STRAIGHT 😂
Even in her responses about the bull fighting theme of the video, she speaks as an artist exploring a mood before she considers the broader issues of the sport. The tragedy and cruelty of it capture the feeling of tragedy and cruelty that can come from intense affairs of the heart, and the risk to bodily safety was an ever present consideration in sex in the 90s, so that works as a metaphor too. Oscar Wilde said that artists must begin from a state of immorality because creation should be first instinctual, not moral. Morality can be brought in later, or not, but the first consideration must be pure and without the societal constraint.
I love Madonna for her open contradictions, genuine commitment to her messages, and consistent transparency about exploring things without having all the answers. Despite her formidable intelligence and her affectations of arrogance, she always arrives at a point of questioning both the world and herself in order to grow.
PS: The director Michael Haussmann is cuuute.
PPS: Madonna’s self written and directed biographical film is back on. It was paused due to her tour, and her tour became an autobiographical expression of its own. But Julia Garner is reconfirmed as principal cast and the project is going ahead 📝🎬📣

This film - so curious to see where will it start, what eras, what lovers, what truths, what lies , what regrets, 😂.
Yeah the director was vintage cute 😊. I don’t know Peter I get the feeling that Madonna started to feel like she could have done some things differently or not at all once she started feeling the cold 🥶 reception and her ego had to be hurt as to your point she is shrewd so numbers mattered to her especially the lack there of given that she had basically been on a 10 year hot streak. But she strikes me as the type who will fulfill the dare to prove a point even though she knows she is crashing out.

    • @petersavieri
      @petersavieri 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@EmpressReacts I definitely think she was shocked by the potential for her work to tank her career, but she’s very no risk no glory, and the glory for Erotica and the Sex book has been in its huge appeal to the queer community, and it’s retrospective place as an incredibly ground breaking and era defining project
She was pilloried by critics and the “moral” majority, and yet her Erotica era (and a similar project, the controversial exhibition of Robert Mapplethorpe’s photography) absolutely defined the S&M aesthetic obsession of the mid 90s
The mainstream loves to appropriate the look of something while denigrating the people who actually live it
Madonna explored the look and the lifestyle, but more crucially she showed genuine queer and fetish representation of the actual community in her book, and sang about us on the album
I think the difference is seeing her work as primarily strategic, when I think it’s genuine art but steered by a highly strategic mind. I do agree that she had to pivot her strategy after Erotica wasn’t as successful or well received as it should’ve been, but I think her artistic self is ultimately glad she did it
The album sold more than six million copies worldwide, which is considerably less than most Madonna albums, but a LOT more than most “hit” records. Plus the superb singles Erotica, Rain and Bad Girl should’ve gotten more sales
I maintain it’s the uptight public’s problem, not Madonna’s art, that obscured the music
PS: I googled Michael Haussmann today… he’s still pretty cute 😅

The bio pic was halted and then kind of turned into the celebration tour. Yes, those Madonna weekends were a big thing, I stayed home to see all the videos and interviews, there was nothing else to see them, unless you recorded it. Have you seen the huge crowds standing in front of her hotel chanting in Rio? It was like the 'old' days, I couldn't believe it myself. And yeah, the first notes of 'Live to Tell' hit hard and even harder in the Celebration Tour, combined with the first sentence of 'In this life' it was actually a highlight in the show. Janet dissed madonna twice, talking about her music her voice. At that time, everyone was being compared to madonna. Selena was called the Mexican Madonna, Kylie was being called the Australian Madonna, and Janet was being called the black Madonna. Being a Kylie fan I know this bothered her a bit but she never dissed Madonna and Selena was a huge fan so it didn't bother her at all, but Janet I think already didn't like Madonna. So, being compared to her must have really gotten under her skin. In an interview, she said. " She does dance music, I guess you can call it that, but I think what I do has class to it." I really think Janet must have heard her bothers talking and got an impression of Madonna and didn't like her because remember the story about madonna going to the Victory tour and kissing Randy right in front of his then girlfriend? then there was the story of Madonna and Michael hanging out, and Michael didn't like the way madonna talked to some kids. I am going to give an opinion based on fact, so please Janet fans dont come for me. (because Janet fans can be as bad if not worse than the Beyhive) I think Janet was annoyed Madonna was in a position she wanted to be in. I think there was competition, and Janet, a mega star in her own right, but she wasn't the Titan madonna was. For example, I have always said Kylie and Janet were mirror images of each other career wise. Like Kylie is huge in the UK Europe and Australia but for years wasn't big here in the US. The same can be said about Janet in the UK and Australia. Madonna doesn't have that problem anywhere in the world. Madonna is a major worldwide star. Once again, Janet fans don't come for me. Instead, look up her chart performances in those countries and see why I have this opinion. Here, Mariah Carey has more number 1s than any female artist in history. madonna has that same title in the UK, Canada, and Australia. To me, because she didn't like Madonna, she didn't want to be compared to her, and if she was going to be compared, she wanted to be the most successful of the 2. IMO

@@EmpressReacts For the record, in this case Janet said "My mother taught me that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." The "What I do has class to it" comment came a year earlier when she was promoting the janet. album. During that time she also complained in an interview that Madonna's book was disgusting and mocked the record sales of Erotica, saying it "only shipped two million." The fact it's later that he wanted to work with Babyface again in her next album originally, but after some songs, she think to this was too similar to ''Take a Bow'' and she abandonned the songs she conceived with him. Some of the demos was leaked in the last years in the net and remains a lot of songs who Babyface produced for others artists like Whitney or Toni Braxton. And Madonna music make in a different direction after her daughter was born in 1996.

I do think that Janet couldn’t understand why Madonna was so much more successful than her. Janet was huge in America but Madonna was bigger in every country in the world including America except for probably 1993 to 1997 where Janet was selling more records then Janet in the USA but in Europe, Australia and South America Madonna has always outsold Janet.

Enjoy the rest of the Bedtime era, because there are some uninspired albums after this -- until 'Ray of Light'. Boring ballads and a cringeworthy Evita soundtrack. Hit those the 'Bedtime' b-sides "Your Honesty", "Let Down Your Guard", and "I'd Rather Be Your Lover w/2Pac". I think you'll like some of those better than some of the album tracks....
