    This song is so underrated. She was giving 100% on those vocals. I wish that she would sing like this more often. Deserves so much more recognition than it got from the mainstream. It didn't help she never made a video for it.

    This song was produced by Shep Pettibone, but definitly a lead of her ''Erotica'' album. This song reaching the top 10 in Billboard Hot 100 in 1991 without to have a music video when it's came out in single, just by huge radio airplay and strong sales in singles.

  • @Marc-zi5cq
    @Marc-zi5cq 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    Told ya, 90s Madonna is still funky and street even if it's in a more grown up and sophisticated way than in 1983.
    Rescue Me is so underrated, i'm not even sure if they intended to release it as a single. I heard radio just started to play the hell out of it after Justify My Love had run its course which was the proper single to promote this album with a video and all. Rescue Me received no video treatment and no promotion or performances from Madonna but it still went top 10, deservedly so.
    Fire vocal performance, fire lyrics, a real anthem sounding finale. This could have been such a big hit if they tried a little more. I could see people still to this day partying to this at Street Parades etc.
    Well it's a little underrated gem for the real fans now. The Immaculate Collection is the only album it was ever featured on. And yes it's a little spoiler soundwise where the Erotica era will go to.

    Wow Empress you have made my day.
    You can hear the transition from Vogue to Justify My Love to Rescue Me.
    Madonna was revolutionary at the time for having these songs where she was talking in.
    The Immaculate Collection was probably her commercial peak. Justify My Love was the first single. I don’t think you’ve done this track yet.
    Rescue Me was the second single. It was released without a music video but still managed to be a top 10 single around the world.
    This song is a fan favourite. She’s never performed it live.
    I came out and started going to my first gay clubs in Australia when it was released and they used to play it 8 times a night.
    Definite career highlight.

  • @FindingMadonna
    @FindingMadonna 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Okay, so I have a lot to say about this song so get comfortable! It's also in my Top 10. This and "Justify My Love" was recorded right after the tour, which is partly why her voice sounds so deep and soulful. It's crazy that this was only a year or two after "Like A Prayer" because I really think she could have sung Niki's part on that song if it had been recorded around this time. I have to disagree that this is her most soulful since the debut though - "Express Yourself" is right up there with "Rescue Me" in terms of vocals. You MUST check out some of the remixes which really put her "vocaaaals" up front and center (my fave is the SOS Mix but also like the Lifeboat and Houseboat). FUN FACT: This was never intended to be a single, but radio jumped on it and starting playing it nonstop so Warner had to rush-release remixes and there was no official video. It peaked at #9 but probably would have reached Top 5 had the retail single been released a little sooner (airplay had already peaked at that point).
    Regarding the Deee-Lite song, Lady Kier has always accused Madonna of plagiarizing "Power of Love" but honestly, the melodies are different and the lyric "I believe in the power of love" is a cliche that's been used in countless pop songs. I think it was most likely just a coincidence or a subliminal thing, and there was really no case to be made since the songs are so different, which is why they never sued her. Also, Deee-Lite making a fuss about stealing was always ironic to me since they "borrowed" so many ideas and used so many uncredited samples in their work, which was very common in house and hip-hop in the 80s and early 90s.
    In terms of the album, I think this was one of the first, if not the first, greatest hits album to include brand new music recorded specifically for it. Madonna has never been interested in the past and told Warner that if they wanted to release a hits album she wanted to include new stuff and re-mix all of the songs.
    Thank you for mixing up the tracklist! 😅 This was a nice Sunday night surprise!

    Back to the black roots of US music and going to rap ! I think what is so important about Madonna is that she - and her art - always transcended the gap betwenn races (genders too). At the beginning of her carreer she wasn't shown beacause she was popular as a "black singer"!!! And she is definitevely against the rise of all communitarianisms and racisms ! This song like many live'performances prove it. Her political points of views too. In "Rescue me" as in "Vogue" she does a rap acting ! The choirs come from, as in "Like a prayer", a black church 🗣⛪️ and her deep voice is black too. That is also why she was, none just as the "Queen of pop"👑, the only star able to pay tribute to Michael Jackson and then to Prince. Merci Empress❤🇫🇷!
    P.-S. : she'been influenced by Nina Simone and the french singer Serge Gainsbourg...

  • @sinansermet
    @sinansermet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This is one of the greatest songs of all time and of course of Madonna's. Learned a lot of words and phrases from her lyrics when I was a child, and learning English. Her lyrics, the power of her voice, the music and the production all are "amazing". She's almost totally vocally out of control in this song, and this is amazing. As mentioned in Wikipedia; this song had already entered Hot 100 Airplay prior to its release, and after its release "Rescue Me" debuted at number 15 on Billboard Hot 100 chart (March 2nd 1991), and it was the highest debut within the previous 21 years since The Beatles "Let It Be" debuted at number six in March 1970. And in three weeks "Rescue Me" reached Top 10 (Number 9) in Billboard Hot 100 chart (Madonna's 22nd Top 10 hit on that chart), without having an official video and sold over 500.000 copies in The US only and Certificated Gold by Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). And the album "Rescue Me" is in, "The Immaculate Collection" (1990) is the best-selling compilation album by a solo artist which has sold more than 30 millions of copies worldwide.

Same with Keep it Together from LAP, or Angel from LAV. 🔥🔥Bop. This was a hit without a video or her performing it. Empress I knew that you would love the lower register and growl. And that background whew. Most artist wouldn't dare or couldn't release a greatest hits compilation this early into their careers.

    You wondered if this was recorded around the same time as I’m Breathless, but from what I remember, this was recorded just after The Blond Ambition Tour, which is why her lower register sounds a little lower and more soulful. Remember she was dealing with laryngitis and lost her voice during parts of the tour.
    Also, I’m happy that you didn’t record a reaction to the whole album as many of the tracks had few changes BUT Like A prayer is worth listening to. Tracks like Holiday and LAP were mixed much like the versions from TBA tour…as you can see from the cover logo…there’s no sign of Madonna but the Jean Paul Gaultier bustier is forever engrained in fashion history as MADONNA! Like her one name…you don’t need anything else to know we’re referring to the Queen of Pop.
    This song is so much fire!!!! I loved your reaction bc it’s the same for me every time I listen to it, even over 30 years after its release!

    I can't wait for you to dive into Bedtime Stories. It's her soul album. My fave, hands down. Her voice has matured so well in this song. Around the time of Take A Bow her voice gets even better as she started taking vocal lessons beforehand to strengthen her voice for Evita.

    This song is amazing… she re-recorded it for her Madame X tour for a dance interlude… was a bit gutted as I thought she was actually going to sing it! ☹️ Love how this album ends with a “brand new” grown up Madonna… it’s like the album takes you through a journey from girl to woman ❤️ No spoilers but I think Madonna talking was on the back of Justify My Love which was written mainly by Ingrid Chavez who’s style was talking over music… I have so much to tell you when you listen to Justify My Love, but I won’t say anything yet 🤫🤐😂 I’m so glad you love Rescue Me ❤️

    There are now 3 Madonna songs that I feel are so identical in vocal power and style and beat...like 1st cousins of each other, they are family...Vogue, Rescue Me and I Don't Search I Find. I remember this song constantly played on the radio and it came out of nowhere. A surprise much like Sidewalk Talk was when that came out of nowhere as it was an underground little known about song Madonna never released on any of her albums, but the dance clubs, indie and college radio stations got a hold of it first before the mainstream got to hear it. I guess the reason why was that it was a rare song that she co-wrote with then boyfriend, and she layed down the backing vocals and was not the main vocal. My guess is that the former boyfriend owns the right to the song, but, definitely a gem of a listen that takes one back to late 70's, early 80's New York urban early hip hop.

    M’s Immaculate Collection was contractual. Back then most record deals included 3 successful albums and a greatest hits. After the mega success of TB, she likely renegotiated to extend and YCD may have closed out the initial deal. She did renegotiate with Erotica, her first album under her own label Maverick. I think it was the biggest all encompassing deal (music, books, movies, etc.) at the time. I believe Janet eclipsed it with her deal with Virgin shortly after.

      Ah interesting ‼️I figured

    • @ms.b9093
      @ms.b9093 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually M had only a singles deal prior to her debut album with a second album option. So, basically a 2 record deal. The success of LAV gave her the negotiation power to write and produce True Blue and follow up albums. Not to mention getting all the publishing right (WEBO GIRL PUBLISHING) . TB, LAP, and Im Breathless were part of the 3 album deal. The success of those albums and the BA Tour gave her even more negotiation power to get her own label deal for Maverick. The Maverick deal gave her even more control over her music, publishing , and TV and film projects. Bigger advances for music videos and promotion and a bigger percentage per record sold. One of the reasons she did not need to tour throughout most the 90's. She was making huge money from her own new music and back catalog. M was making around $30million a year off her back catalog sales and airplay throughout most of the 90's. Her back catalog sales always increased with every new album release. And because of Maverick she made a big percentage off all the artist sales on her own label. Alanis Morressette made her huge money too. M was a money making machine in the 90's for sure thanks to smart business moves by herself and Freddy DeMann.
