The Imperials doing Southern Gospel!!! This movie was made the year I was born, so I enjoyed seeing the best in gospel for that year. We just "happened " onto this tonight and were absolute FLOORED!! GROUPS we had only heard of were right there singing their best. We followed the Gaither Homecoming videos from the beginning and got introduced to many of these groups through them. Living in Washington state, Southern Gospel wasn't a familar music genre to us...but it is now!!!
There's some interesting Hank Williams connections here. Red Foley sang "Peace In The Valley" at Hank's funeral in 1952. Hank originally recorded the recitation Red does at the end, under the title "The Funeral," released under Hank's alias Luke The Drifter. In addition, the minister who introduces the acts is played by Merle Kilgore, who was longtime manager of Hank Williams Jr., and played himself in the 1979 TV movie about Hank Jr.'s life.
Not to take anything from the movie, but nothing about it was "recorded live." Notice how many of the songs have full accompaniment, yet except for a couple of instances, there's only a piano or guitar on stage. On one song at least you see a guy playing piano, yet what you hear is an organ.
Thank you so much for posting this beautiful collection of gospel tunes! Blooper alert at the 4:04 mark. The entire plot of the movie is that the Tollivers are late for the concert. Yet when the film cuts from the concerned woman outside on the steps to the inside of the church, you can see Mrs. Tolliver and her errant son already seated in the front row.
I loved the authentic Southern accents of that time. Even the children on the show. Our Southern accents aren't quite as pronounced now. Mainly because of television, I suppose. But I love the Alabama accents. It was a good show but there was no plot or ending.
If you watch the movie, not just the singing, there's a whole scene where the boy clearly doesn't want to go to some "square" gospel sing with his mother.

This is a time capsule of the people who lived long enough to be cherry-picked by Bill Gaither, who only chose the best in the world. If you watch Gaither Vocal Band videos you will recognise a lot of 20 yr younger versions of the GVB. This is actually a magnificent recording of the beginnings of this music

I have heard many of these singers and songs back in the 60’s. We still have some of their records.
Well, times change, styles change. Taste changes. Not long after this production, Bill and Gloria Gaither came along and changed everything.
For the better, may I add
