    I think doing your background first so you' spend more time looking at your subject and you "have something to look forward to", and so you don't rush through the background because the part you wanted to do is already done, is a really good tip. I have very little experience with colored pencil as an adult. So far I've drawn a parrot and a dog. I really like drawing animals. I guess I would have to say, at this time, my favorite medium is probably acrylic and that's because I feel confident with it.

      Drawing animals is a lot of fun!! Acrylic is one of my favorite mediums as well, I worked in acrylic for years and years before I started working in colored pencil. I picked up colored pencil about four years ago, and before then I hadn't worked with them much as an adult either. I fell in love with them, I think acrylic and colored pencil are my two favorite mediums, but I love working in a lot of others too. Depends on my mood that day! lol

    Thanks for taking time making this tutorial, I found your video to be the most helpful in your teaching style and way of showing and explaining. I'm brand new to colored pencils artistically, I'm using Crayola Colored Pencils 36ct and a basic adult coloring book(Dollar store) Currently working on my 3rd picture haha and enjoy improving and learning more, I'm coloring a landscape/countryside page and getting stuck on correct lighting & shading in this particular scene; the sun is in the middle in the far background its "rays" outlined straight up, side to side, maybe a sunrise, but the sun(light source) only takes up an inch or so of space down then all across to appear very distant. The sun peaks between several hills & closer distant trees off the right, a barn&house setting upper-center page appearing down the hill using a wooden fence curving up & leads you up a hill & crosses back over into view as one of main focal points, being larger more details in wood w/ an owl perched on end of fence appearing next to viewer, a large leafless tree sets within main focal atop the hill with some layered grass & flowers filling space between owl and tree.
    Part of my confusion is the distant centered lighting of sun and correctly highlighting or darkening the proper areas... do you have an example tutorial for this lighting scenario, or could you please explain basics on proper color depth & how/ when highlights/darkening come into play for the diverse distances in landscapes especially coloring when main focal is atop hill with sunlight below and very distant . (Your tutorial makes sense on lighting coming from one side or the other, I saved your video for future reference & of course subscribed your channel!) One more Question lol you were explaining shading for distant trees and closer up trees, do you mean the further away a tree/object is the darker & less detailed it should be, then as trees/objects appear closer the lighter in color and more detailed they should be, did I interpret that right? I hope you can help, clearly you're way better at explaining things, it would be so much appreciated thanks !!

      Hey there hank! Thank you for watching and subscribing! As far as the picture you are working on, of I am picturing it right, with a sunset many of your objects will be backlit, or even silhouetted. If the object is nearly directly in front of the sun it may be a silhouette, if it's further a way it may look backlit with the strongest highlights being on the side of the object that is closest to the sun. But honestly, it's hard for me to give exact advice without seeing it myself. I recommend looking up mountain landscapes at sunset and just look at a bunch of pictures (don't copy them of course) to get a general idea of how lighting might work in that situation.
      As far as your other question goes, generally speaking, in a landscape the further away an object is, the less detailed and lighter it will be, unless it is against a really bright sky and in that case it may be darker as a silhouette. The reason it is less detailed and lighter is because there is more air, moisture and particulate between the viewer and farther away objects, so they tend to get hazy the farther away they are. Closer objects will be in higher contrast, so the shadows will be darker and highlights stronger, because up close things are clearer, with less "atmosphere" in the way. This is a form of what is called atmospheric perspective. Of course, this can also depend on the situation, for instance the reason some of the further away trees may appear darker in my drawing is because of the kind of trees they are compared to the other trees in my composition. They are also not so much further away that they will be affected as much at that point. But as a general rule of thumb in landscape, further away objects get lighter. Also, for the same reason, further away objects are cooler in color, and closer objects are warmer in color. It's also helpful to remember that cool colors recede and warm colors pop or come forward in a composition, so if you have a main focus in your art, it helps if it is warmer than the background. I hope this helps!

      @@CautionArtistatPlay Wow thanks for the detailed reply, yes this explanation has helped, I'm still working on the picture and using your tips began experimenting with the silhouette lighting, what's interesting about this picture is deciding where or what the artist meant the focal point to be, also how interesting learning about lighting in this picture with the closer hills/pastures leading you in several directions due to a fence running up a hill with a few layers and in distance and separations in grass/ foliage lines. I've dabbled in acrylic painted landscapes that turned out really good and really enjoyed it, self-taught so that's why I'm not yet familiar with proper terms, that was 7yrs ago last time I painted or did arts, with painting I just get right into painting using imagination but usuallywould go to a park and paint what I saw. Coloring with colored pencils I'm learning is much different but in a good way, and finding it to be peaceful. I don't think there's an option so I can comment a picture of the landscape page I'm working on so you can see what I'm describing, could I please email it to you? I would love your opinion on the pic and what you think of the landscape in general, like your opinion on its focal pts, if it's maybe too difficult a scene to color for beginners or not, and of course lighting in this setting, especially when it comes to the grass area closest in view where they've also placed a tree sitting atop with everything else below and distant including the sunlight. You have a talent explaining things well and simply, balancing explanations perfect for beginners. Other tutorials tend to be too drawn out and loses my attention either over explaining or not enough like in terminology. It would be so great if you used the page/scene I'm working on (or something similar) and make a tutorial/explanation video from it, There's really not much content I could find helping with the lighting for this particular scenario, I can't be the only newbie stuck on this 😀

    So do you have your Gamsol in the water brush? That doesn't eat or warp the plastic of the water brush?! Thanks!
    P.S. What brand brush is that? I didn't see it in your materials list! Cheers!!

      Yes, I do have OMS in the water brush. I believe it's a pentel water brush, I have had it for years and haven't had any issues with it warping or eating through the plastic! It has worked great for me!

    Thanks for taking the time to do this tutorial; however, as a beginner the speed coloring didn't help.

      Sorry it was too fast for you. If you click the gear ⚙️ icon on the video, there is an option to change the playback speed, and you can slow it down that way. It might help.

    Can u do this landscape without using Gamsol?

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it could absolutely be done without using Gamsol. It just might take more time. Any colored pencil subject can be done without Gamsol, you would just need to do more light layers and perhaps some burnishing to cover the tooth of the paper. I hope this helps!

      Caution: Artist at Play Somehow when I attempt to start lightly putting down some layers it looks not one bit like your piece. 😩

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lisahammerstein217 it takes a very sharp point and a lot of layers. Colored pencil work takes a very long time. It's hard to tell when watching videos because they are usually very sped up. It also helps if you have the right kind of paper that can take a lot of layers. What kind of pencils and paper are you using?

      Caution: Artist at Play I’m using Prismacolor, Polychromos & Luminance pencils on Claire Fontain Pastel Mat. I know it’s not the best choice of paper but I’m still somewhat new to CP and haven’t found the right paper for me. Btw, you live in my favorite State!🙂

    • @CautionArtistatPlay

      Oh cool! I love living in Maine, it's beautiful! I don't have much experience with Pastelmat and colored pencil, I have Pastelmat but have only used pastels on it so far so can't give any advice as far as techniques on Pastelmat goes. I need to try colored pencils on Pastelmat soon, that's why I bought it, but I haven't gotten around to it. I do know that a lot of colored pencil artists love Pastelmat, but I don't know how different the techniques are, if at all. I really like Canson Mi-Teintes, the smooth side, which I believe is what I used here. I typically like to lay down my harder oil based pencils first (Polychromos) then come over them with the wax based (Prismas/Luminance)so the tooth of the paper doesn't get filled too quickly and I can add more layers, but really it can go either way with a light touch. All the pencils mix well together.
