John Deere 7520 - First Start in Over 10 Years

  • This John Deere 7520 has been stored away in a shed for over 10 years, probably close to 13 years. This is it’s first start since being put away. It starts with the first turn of the key, very pleasing. After clearing away some cob webs and hosing the dust off I take the 7520 for a drive down the road and out into the paddock. The ride is a little rougher than it used to be due to square tyres from sitting so long. Check out some of my other John Deere and Waterloo Boy videos.

    What a great looking tractor, even if cabless at present. Such a classic. Only thing I would say, is change that engine oil ASAP ! Might be plenty of oil in it, but it's black as your boot - definitely time for a refresh in that department.

    I was raised on Deere and of course our trusty ole Zetor 5340. We have a 1957 620, 1972 1020 and a early 2000s 790. I have been looking for a 4840 but after watching this behemoth come back to life I might start trying to find a 7 series.

      Yes, I also like the sound. I spent countless hour listening to this engine. We also had a 6030 with same engine. Many hours on the 6030 too. Even from a mile away the sound working fully loaded was memorable. One day I’ll get the cabin back on. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. If you’re interested I uploaded another video on Waterloo Creek of the 7520 working.

    Make sure the coolant in the radiator has 50% antifreeze, else your water pump will give up after working about ten days. I ran a JD 450 tracked shovel I bought new in 1969 with the 'new' 2020 diesel, which has the same block as the tractor version but with undercarriage industrial strengthening. I was advised to change the coolant in summer and omitted to add the antifreeze.......well, only a fool makes the same mistake twice. Loved that machine, first-time start every time, even in extreme cold. No glow plugs are fitted or necessary, and fuel economy was a real eye opener compared to Caterpillar. One other lesson I learned was to use the specially formulated oil developed for John Deere, (I used Shell products, for other oils fouled with carbon the pencil-slim injectors secured by a couple of small bolts and easily changed for service).
    It became surplus after eight years hard work, and lay outside four years with a jam jar on the exhaust pipe to keep out the rain, yet started on the button after fitting a 12-volt car battery, and was sold to a young man starting a new business.

    What made you decide to start it after 10 years?

    • @waterloocreek5659
      @waterloocreek5659  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Time has been the greatest barrier to getting the tractor out earlier. I’d been wanting to give the 7520 a run for years knowing that leaving a tractor sitting too long is not good. In the end I just made time. I thought it would be good for my 17 year old son to see the tractor running and take it or a drive. The last time he’d seen it run he was about 4 years old. Hopefully we’ll get the tractor out again soon and get it hooked up and making some dust

      Hey Miguel. 25 years ago each rear tyre was $1900. To replace the front tyres now they would cost over $3000 each. It would be great but hard to justify $6000 for a tractor that has only been driven once in 10 years and not been working in the paddock for 23 years👍.

    When you start the JD 7520 10 years from now, assuming that you remember that is, turn the engine over for 30 sec or so with the throttle in the engine shut down position to allow the oil pump to pump oil back up into the oil galleys and bearings. Pretty darn sure that start was not good for the engine.
