The Catharsis of Ministry "Animositisomina"

  • Ministry's 2003 album, "Animositisomina," saw the band return to the speeds and volumes of their earlier years. By spending less time in the studio, the result was more straightforward after releasing two curveball albums.

      Dan,
      Well said.
Uncle Al left it way, way way too late. All o f music had changed by then.
Grunge had been wiped out a nd most importantly, Colombine had happened in the US.
Goth along with Industrial music was blamed for Colombine. NiN were deliberately targeted by the media and the music industry. By default Ministry suffered.
No one but small niche r a dio stations would play Ministry by t hen.
The combined sales failures of Pig and Spoon had caught up to Jourgensen and Baker.
They were broke after Warner's dumped them.
By this a album I too had g i ven up on Ministry.
I was purchasing Sphinctour o n DVD in 2001 when the guy behind the counter said listen to Ministry's new album. Its unexpectedly good. I downloaded it, gave it two listens and didnt listen to Ministry again for 11 years. !

The first Ministry album that I was introduced to was the very popular Psalm 69. Back in the 90s Psalm 69 was a huge introduction to The Industrial music genre for a lot of people including myself. I remember listening to that and slowly finding myself branching out and finding more Industrial bands to listen to. With that being said I actually really liked Ministry’s Filth Pig album. I kinda dug the more striped down sound of Filth Pig even though it was a bit of a departure from their previous album. Ministry is one of those bands that can pretty much do whatever they want and I’ll like it.

It should be noted that Stanley Kubrick made special mention in his will about Ministry being the Flesh Fair Band in A.I. ~~ call it one of his last dying wishes, per say....what an incredible honor for Ministry to have been chosen by a filmmaking legend to be featured in his “swan song” last film. Too bad Speilberg sterilized the fuck out of that movie...it definitely has a pusillanimous vibe attached to it that you can clearly see is all Speilberg...having said that, the overall movie has a morose quality with a melancholic ending that leaves you disheveled if not all together in tears so I still feel A.I. is a triumph despite its problems 🍿💗🍿

Loving these documentaries/short album summaries you've been doing with the Ministry stuff.
This is kind of a weird album for me because I was 13 at the time and going through some up and down time. Didn't end up owning a copy until much later, 2008 I think? But I had heard a bunch of songs from a buddy who has it and I was hooked. I also didn't know much about Al and Ministry then, so it was just a cool industrial metal album that I wanted. Ended up getting Houses in 2004 though. At that point I really had to dig into the history because this was some fascinating stuff to say the least.
    Cheers!

Since my favorite Ministry albums were Spoon, Pig, Psalm, Mind, and Rape, I was excited when this album came out. The album itself was technically good, but since I was a 90's teen that had been thrust into depression after seeing how shitty the world was getting in the 21st century, I was sort of "numb" to being able to really enjoy the album like I had the previous albums. Kind of like how when you are depressed suddenly food stops tasting good and stuff you enjoy stops being enjoyable. Anyway, since the world has continued it's downward slide into shit with no hope of ever turning things around to reach levels of bliss that the 1990's were, combined with my youth fading away,.. I can only seem to enjoy anything if it brings me happy memories.

The world has been shit for a variety of reasons for a decades. Usually it only seems less shit when we're younger due to us not being aware or exposed enough to the world around us & looking back with rose tinted glasses will always make us long for the 'good' old days. It's a matter of perspective. Hope you are at least able to enjoy this album now as it holds it's own with all their classic albums before it in my opinion.

I was waiting for this after those sterling videos on Filth Pig & Dark Side... & as usual you didn't disappoint! Really appreciate all the info I didn't know about this, given how this is one of Ministry's most overlooked & criminally underrated albums. Not to mention it's one of my all time faves of theirs.
One thing that jumped out at me was that little ticking noise in the background of Leper... So that's how they made that sound, razor on glass? When listening to it on headphones, I always think of that sound as sounding like when you're under water in a pool with a 'creepy crawly' (that's what we call it where I'm from)... it makes that same ticking sound at the exact same tempo! Well now I'll never hear it the same way again, haha!

This album is criminally underrated - not just by critics, but by Al himself. "Non-album" my ass. Giving Paul sole control of the album's production was the best thing that could have happened to Ministry. The album is loud as hell, with lots of chunky bass and processed guitars. It's more industrial than anything they have done since. The brickwalling of the instruments is what gives this album its unique character.

It took a while, but I can listen to the Bush trilogy too. Thats where I stop. The stuff after it’s pretty terrible. But yes, Paul added counterbalances, psychedelic elements, and made sure the lyrics weren’t about stupid crap. Lead Into Gold’s newest album will remind you of what Ministry is missing.

Been hella psyched for this one, thank you!🙏 My favorite tracks off the album, first one being "shove"👌 I just love the drum beat, the bass line, and the sort of slide into each note guitar🎸🎹🎧💫😵 "the light pours out of me" I remember seeing a bootleg where Ogre from "skinny puppy" sings it. And is it just me or does Al sound like Perry Farrell from "Jane's Addiction" on "unsung"?

    • @KillbotAndGorGorAttack
      @KillbotAndGorGorAttack  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Funny thing about that, Al addresses it in an interview and said Ogre never sang that song with them, Al always minicked Devoto to where he almost sounded like Ogre. I had a bootleg live CD (called House of Bones) and indeed, it sounded HORRIBLE.

I get the feeling if I can find that album it shall be my therapy. HEHEHEHEHE! “To put it simply: this album is loud.” Along with the fat blue waves in the Audacity image: NO SHIT, SHERLOCK! Good one there. "Animositisomina" is sounding a very fine thing to reach for soon as well. (If I can eventually find “Dark Side…” at some point…) Howard Devoto? I shall take this into consideration! (Just shared this show with an important person of mine.) Dang… I really need to update my music collection… but that was the fun of finding new friends who carried on without me; Gets me re-interested. (I’ll probably enjoy the instrumental.) This is intense with information. I think I need a list of all the post bands and albums!
By the way, we have searched three months in our music stores and can *not* find a copy of “Dark Side of The Spoon”. I blame you entirely. I shall not request it from the demon-lord of Amazon. We’ll just keep hunting on our own, but I wanted to let you know: I hold you responsible!

Ministry is so incredibly excellent as avante Garde rock artists, they don’t just make great music...I consider their discography a collection of esoteric brilliance....I often say to people of lesser intellectual means that stuff like Ministry, Skinny Puppy, early Mudhoney, Front Line Assembly, Sonic Youth & Melvins is not merely music...this is the stuff of sound sculpture...these artists have created the equivalent of affluent art that of a magnificent painting (Jackson Pollock or Picasso) ... imagine an auditory painting...painting sound, if you will ~~ sound art or noise sculpture....Ministry & their comrades (or peers) are not just making beautiful music....THEY CREATE FINE ART !!!!!!

"Almost lost my arm from a spider bite on my dealers couch" hmmm 🤔 is it possible injecting drugs might cause an infection and look like a spider bite.

    • @FrostedSeagull
      @FrostedSeagull 3 ปีที่แล้ว

E hhr No . . . the spider bite story is well known.
What confuses peo p le IS that Uncle Al on a seperate occssion injected badly mixed low quality heroin where on that occasion he almost lost his right arm. Al allegedly started yelling that he was a "famous rock star" whose company would sue f oir millions if he lost his arm. That story goes that one of the doctor's did confirm that it was Al Jourgensen and he was in a relatively big band at that time. The doctors did save his arm, most likeky, not wanting to risk a million dollar law suit with Warner's. Jourgensen admitted he was lucky on that occasion a l so as he was literally only hours from losing his arm !. P
Spider Bite - Uncle Al J
was a broke and a serious junkie with a minimum $500 per day habit by 1998. His health was shot.
He lived on a dealers filthy couch in a room infested with cockroaches, bugs etc.
A spider did actually bite him on the toe.
The combination of poor health, a very compromised immune system and no hygeine exarcebated the spider bite.
NOTE - Alice in Chain's frontman - Layne Staley's - girlfriend Demi Perrot, died in similar circumstancrsas An infection which normally could've easily been treated by antibiotics, killed her. Her seriously comprimised immune system failed her.
The infection spread to her heart. She died of a heart failure caused by multiple organ failure caused by the onset of severe sepsis.

I should send you the CD gatefold of Cocked & Loaded so you can see that Luc Van Acker was in there too and he definitely is an original member of Revco as per Richard 23, (Front 242), Bill Rieflin, Paul Barker, Chris Connelly & soon after Mike Scaccia...think Michael Balch was involved too early on to some capacity....Jeff Ward & Trent Reznor were part of the Beers Steers & Queers touring band...but at least you got Phildo Owens in there, Bub 👌

Killbot&GorGorAttack!! Yes...it be great to get everyone from the 1st 2 records & tours: Chris Connelly, Luc Van Acker, Richard 23, Bill Rieflin, Paul Barker, Al Jourgensen, Nivek Ogre, Trent Reznor (though he goes uncredited as an official touring member cuz he was in fact a roadie at the time who got promoted to keyboards, lol) & Phildo Owens...throw in Jello Biafra & Gibby Haynes for good measure & shits & giggles...and how the fuck could you go wrong!!! ☺️

Towards the end, “revolting cocks without any original members” is now “without anyone from the classic lineup, save for Phildo Owens”

I had to pause the video for a second, because I noticed VH1 asked Al about Johnny Cash covering Nine Inch Nails’ song “Dirt” on his new album and if there was a song of his that he would like the Man in Black to have a go at? “Dirt”? Come on! Get the freakin’ name right!

Stuff like the masterful song “Broken” should encompass Alternative Top 40 Radio versus the garbage saturating the airwaves as of late...in our alternate universe ~ Ministry sweeps the Grammys every year along with his buddy Trent Reznor & crap like Taylor Swift, Pitbull or JayZ is gutter trash that gets smashed to pieces by disgruntled affluent music fans 🤟🏽🤟🏻🤟🏼🤟🏿🤟🤟🏾🤟🏻🤟🏼

Look, it isn't that I haven't liked some of what Al has done in the past 15 years, in fact, he's had some great tunes, but THIS was the last REAL Ministry album. After Paul left, it just ain't the same.

As much as I loved Al's autobiography, his refusal to acknowledge any of Paul Barker's input was obnoxious and frustrating. It wasn't as bad as Peter Hook's constant (but justified) bitching in his New Order autobiography, but it was close. No autobiography should ever be written unless the author is willing to be 100% honest with himself and the reader.

Relapse is an abomination...i’ll give you that but FBTE is a clever and refreshing return to form...chock full of samples and Scaccia’s last hoorah...this album has some already classic songs: Thanks but No Thanks, Change of Luck, Mikey’s Middle Finger, PermaWar....and yes, there’s sum stupid shit on there too like that song with Diana Ross samples, Lesson Unlearned, Al’s voice is so garbled and hoarse on this song...it’s a fucking mess and Perfect Storm is terrible amateur sounding drum machine with flat dull generic sounding guitars...that Fox News song is retarded too, lol...so it has some cool moments but definitely competes with Relapse in terms of BOMB status, lol...
