This is awesome !!! Great job explaining everything!!! Now in my case I just rinse and repeat down the timeline, placing pause markers in between songs and I am good to go or if your a DJ no pause markers. Live show coming soon!!
If you use multiple machines you can use Bome Network to send midi to the other machines. Works great. I network 3 machines. Reaper triggers lighting PC live and triggers Live Cam PC. You just set the out of the midi track to the networked machine. Really straight forward. Bome Midi Translator is great too. No latency.
This seems good for general scenes that you plan on just leaving on for extended periods Wouldn't really work well for actually syncing a light show to the music.
Great video, thanks for the info. Do you know how to automate the use of more than the 20 sequences? Is it possible to switch to different page via MIDI control and play more sequences after the 1st 20 are all done?
I wanted to put this up here. I tried Freestyler and I really wanted it to work but it is glitchy with win10. For example I had two pars set up as separate fixtures . However Freestyler kept sending the same values to both lights, Some values would be separate and would fool me into that its working. SO I switched over to QLC+ but not the newest version which has some issue with Entec Open USB and all is working fine with my pars. I tried the laser but it won't work. at all in QLC, and in Freestyler it would light up but no accurate control with Freestyler.. But the pars which for me are easier to deal with work fine in QLC
Ok just wanted to follow this up. I ended using my DAW Flstudio to run the lights. Inside Flstudio is a vst called Zgame visualiser. Its able to control DMX lights with slider switches. All you have to know is what the channels on the light do and with FLstudio automation, you have beautifully working in sync lights. In fact Flstudio could be the king of live software if they just fix a few things. Look for a video soon.
Amazing video. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain it. Reaper is fantastic. Just one question... How would you route the video from Reaper to some LCDs or projector? Is there a way to telling Reaper that video has to go out by the HDMI output?
I think I had to use my laptop to send the output to a projector through a video port with a key combination like Alt F4 or something. I don't know how Reaper could do it.
I have a Video track in the timeline in reaper and then just have the video window fullscreen on the other monitor. Super straight forward. Reaper is the best.
Hi Bruce, the Stop the Sequence action does not work for me. Turning on the sequence is no problem. I noticed that you didn't actually place the notes in you example to turn off the sequence. And how do you make just a simple flash that plays with a particular note. i had to make an extra sequence the black it out. is there an easier way?
Not really an expert but I believe the only way to change what the lights are doing, including turning them off, is to create a scene and call it. I don't think turning off a sequence will reverse what happened when you turned it on. I would normally turn a sequence off because I'm confused what would happen if I ran another sequence without turning off the previous one. I wouldn't want one sequence requesting red while another was requesting blue. If you don't turn the previous sequence, after a while you could have dozens running at the same time.

Brilliant! Just what I was looking for.
same here in 2024!

Man I cant thank you enough, I've been struggling with ableton live and freestyler, reaper is so much easier
The only problem I had was I had to check the "disable double trigger protection"
Thank you so much for the tutorial!
Very well done Bruce. Thank you for sharing this information.
Awesome, this might come in good use for a project I have. Thanks!
huge thank to you ! very clear and very complete !
Good video. Exactly what I was looking for.
Awesome! Thanks for this!

Very well explained! Thanks
Brilliant! Thanks a Lot. really clear instructions.
Can I use a standard USB to XLR cable for the same thing?

Thanks for the info man! Is there a way to control the dimmers using this method?
Was there a split-second delay before the lighting changes?
There may have been some delay but it is more likely the result of my editing trying to synchronize multiple videos into one.
