Happy New Year! What curl habits do you want to break this year? Drop them below! Summary on the blog post: genamarie.co/2025/01/5-habits-to-break-for-your-curls-to-thrive-in-2025-rizos-curls-review/
Hi, so I've been trying to get any TH-camr that does this content to please give me some advice for 2 years and haven't gotten any luck. I understand my situation is unique, but I can't be the only one-handed/arm girl with curly hair in the world! I was shot in the back of my neck by my bf of 7 years and it hit my spinalcord, so the right side (my dominant side) of my body is permanently paralyzed. I'm desperate to have a content creater like yourself to either give me some advice or it could be some type of "challenge" video for you. Idk. I'm desperate for someone to come up with a solution for me that I can do on my own.
Great point on the refresh! I’ve been lucky enough to have my curls last long. I wash my hair once a week with only 1-maybeeeee 2 refresh sessions during the week. I work from home so the less product and refreshing I put on my hair the better and it’s crazy because doing this has made my curls thrive and be super define with max volume ❤
I would like a video explaining a refresh routine that uses less water. My hair is fine, thin and wavy. I also tend to get tangles (I don’t brush it day two but I definitely have to refresh). Also would love to see day 2 styling ideas especially for fine/thin hair and ways to put it up. I have to wash every 2 days sometimes 3 in winter but I head sweat really bad and my hair just needs to be cleaned after a couple of days in summer.
Happy new year to Gena and ofcourse everyone reading this comment🎉 I hope your year is even better than last❤ I have a spray bottle with water, in the morning I spray light, fluff up the curls and leave it to dry. It works magic! I also notice iff the curlies don't react to the water it's time to wash, mostly every 3 to 4 days, my scalp is so oily so it gets greasy iff I don't wash🤦♀️🥺
Happy New Year! Thank you for all the information. I am still struggling with some winter frizz, but I am looking at my hydration level in my body as well as my hair hydration. If you have any advise for older woman (meaning me) on vitamins that would be great. If anyone has any advise on hrt or vitamins here in the comments area that would be interesting to me. Your hair is beautiful as always!!!!!!!!
Can you do a dedicated Silver hair curl video? I started going white when I was 9 years old and in later years my hair is really awkward... I have long-term health issues but I can have Great hair then all of a sudden it's rubbish and I can't make it happy, even keeping with the same... I found the Garnier Hair Food Conditioner/multi-purpose cream as my only styler and conditioner gave brilliant results before. I might try that again 🤔🤔🤔
I like using the Pureology leave in conditioner, Pattern mousse, brush style then scrunch in a light coat of Jesse Curl Spiralesous gel. Get great long lasting results. I only refresh with a little water in my palm with a little gel, scrunch and go.
I personally detangle/wash my hair once a week and to "re-fresh" I apply a few drops of lightweight oil in my hands and smooth my hair with the praying hands method. I really want a bounce curl defining brush... but it's kind of expensive lol I will have to save up for it. I have tried a variety of styling techniques, and I find that the bowl method works best for my hair, especially in the winter. I use a lightweight spray leave-in, a heat protectant, and a gel. I will spray some conditioner and my heat protectant into the bowl of water, mix it, and soak/brush my hair in the water. After I do that for a few minutes I will brush out the extra water and then apply a decent amount of gel and style upside down. I then diffuse my hair 70% dry upside down and then finish air drying right side up. This routine gives me a soft, natural, volumized look.
I also trim my own hair at home once every 6 months. My hair is pretty healthy and that's when I start to notice split ends. I'm also currently trying to grow out my hair, and my hair grows like half an inch per month so I trim off one inch every trim. And yeah- my hair grows extremely fast. Just genetics.
Also I sleep with my hair up on top my head at night in a light bun. I’ve tried a bonnet but I always have to wet my hair in the morning. I even have satin hair ties and a pillow case 😢
Hi Gena Happy New Year. Can I ask a question? When your hair needs protein should it be in shampoo conditioner and styling products? And how long do you need to add it for? Also I’ve purchased the Ouidad advanced climate control gel. It’s nice and much lighter than the AG Recoil but my gosh it made my scalp super itchy. Having a baldy head sometimes it’s hard to miss the scalp. However it refreshed nicely the next day and diluted the itchiness. Having not much hair it’s hard not to damp it most days but I’ve been mindful. I had to do it with the Ouidad I was so itchy. I’m wearing a little bonnet and silk pillow case and that’s helping my hair not get all tangled which looks like tiny little balls of wool. It also stops my pugs coat from going all over scalp as she sleeps with her head on my head. You’re amazing you are helping me so much and I am loving my head instead of being embarrassed Karen🇦🇺🩷
I am new at curls. I have chemo curls and love them. I want to keep them forever!! I’ve been soaking my hair almost daily but don’t wear a cap to bed. I had to when I was bald. Do you have a site I can go to for questions?? Love you!! Thanks
I have my new group coaching program if that's something you're interested in: genamarie.co/curl-coaching/ Otherwise if you just have one or two questions, I offer email coaching. That offering is on pause right now though but you'll be able to book in February if you check back!
If you have to refresh or wash your hair every day I love using coconut oil on my hair before shampooing! (Any other oil also applies) If you want to supercharge your conditioning process and don't feel like buying a deep conditioner I've been testing out mixing my conditioner with coconut oil and find that has been working for me so far. I also have fine hair and am trying to grow it long again after having it in a bob haircut for over a year. I have to prioritize my scalp health since I'm a gym rat with an oily scalp and I'd wash daily if I could. This is where I love my stronger shampoos.
Hi! Fairly new here! Amazing video and GORGEOUS curls by the way. Question! Would you say some breakage is normal even for healthy hair? I was wondering since even with the greatest routines everyone's hair is susceptible to some breakage since we do brush our hair/style it! :)
For my hair and preferences, strong hold is the way to go because I want max definition that lasts to save me time. However, some people prefer a light hold if they want a different look (often fluffier, softer, and more movement). The trade-off with light hold is it doesn't last as long. I also think brands struggle to effectively formulate a strong hold gel so you will see light and medium hold gels most often. People really struggle to find a good strong hold gel but there are SO many light hold options out there.
I've reviewed them on my channel in the past and other content! I don't get very long lasting results with their gel so I don't recommend that anymore unless you have low porosity hair or live in a dry climate. Their primer is a favorite of mine, leave-in, and deep conditioners. I dont recommend the shampoo
When you say refreshing, do you also mean just using a teeny tiny bit of leave in conditioner, with no water, on the frizzier bits with minimal disruption to waves/curls?
That's totally fine! That's actually what I did today and even added a little bit of water to my palms with the leave-in. That will help to re-condition the hair so it won't get dry, but doesn't fully soak and restyle our curls. If your refresh is just damp or if it dries within a few min after, that's fine!
@@GenaMarie Thank you so much for replying. My hair is so dry up top hard to get the curl back and use to have it so short on top but growing it out and top is hard to manage.
Oh noooo😮 😢 runnn, really really fast! A hairdresser did that to me, too, then proceeded to use a comb and a regular nozzle on the dryer. I left the place with a head of spiked frizz - like an electrified afro! I cried all the way home. She claim to know how to cut curly hair. I now ask more questions before those scissors get near my curls, 😊 [3c/4a high porosity that a sponge would envy] blessings~
@@lots2learn373I had exactly the same experience with my thick, coarse 3A curls. The hairdresser used thinning shears and by the time she’d finished, my hair looked like a thatched roof. Plus it took the best part of 18 months to grow out! 🤬 If anyone suggests using thinning shears on curly hair then I’d seriously doubt their competency as a hairdresser.
Happy 2025, Gena! ☺️ Your hair's looking very healthy, longer and thicker mashallah. Also your day one results were so beautiful! 🥰 Day two as well. I'd try to smooth out the frizzy bits using an oil serum like Verb's Ghost oil. And me, myself I personally like some frizz in my hair. I like that lived in look lol, but my hair's fine too. I saw that you used Curlsmith's shield spray. I'm looking for an effective, affordable heat protectant spray. Which ones do you like? Have experienced working the best to protect your hair from heat damage when diffusing? One of my goals for 2025 is to diffuse my hair less. I've been noticing a lot more damage since diffusing. It's probably time I invested in a better diffuser though, like the Curlsmith one. I didn't consider my towel either though! I use a regular bath towel. So let me buy a new hair towel too!!! 😂
But I shampoo hair 2-3 times a week because my scalp gets oily and if I don't my dandruff comes back. No shampoo has helped, I ordered a anti dandruff professional shampoo and hopefully that will help but my skin is extremely oily, gets oily within hours of washing my face, so thats probably why my scalp is like this.
Hi Gena, Happy New Year. Can using products with aloe vera ingredients cause flash drying? I have high porosity 3A/3B fine curls and I am concerned about this. Also, when getting a hair trim, should you go to the hairdresser's without styling products in the hair but only freshly washed and dried hair?
Happy new year! Aloe can cause flash drying but usually only when there’s also a lack of conditioning ingredients in the formula. A well balanced product with aloe should not cause it. When it comes to going for a haircut, check with the hairdresser to see what they prefer. It should definitely be curly when you go in and how you usually wear it
What do you mean? I think you've misunderstood. This was a wash day for me that I was demonstrating in the video and not a refresh day. I'm referring to refresh days when I am saying it's best not to soak your hair, detangle, and restyle it daily.

The headrest in my truck was making my hair in back of my head dry and frizzy. Covered it with t shirt material.
Yes! Such an easy switch. You can also drape a silk scarf over it
Great idea!@@GenaMarie
I found a satin tunic at a thrift store for that purpose😅

I'm glad you mentioned a pillow case to "towel" dry hair. I started that a few weeks ago and had great results

You are so correct. My last week wash day went great only using the gel. Barely refreshed too. I completely agree less is better.
It would be very interesting if you made a video applying gel after brush styling to see the difference from how you normally apply it.

Your hair looks great! 😍 Rizos hairspray would give a harder hold, which I absolutely love!😊
Yes, I wish I had that!
What hairdryer do you use in this video? Your defuser is big. Love your curls ❤

Tries just using the Ouidad gel with a small amount of leave in conditioner and didn't get good results. Its also incredibly dry here.
Quidad’s gel has never given me good results, no matter how I’ve used it. Sometimes the “highly recommended “ just don’t work for everyone.

I have noticed they just create frizz! All those hairs that get cut shorter mid-shaft can't group into their curl clumps so they frizz out.
