It reminds me of the Konmari method but on a larger scale. Marie Kondo wants us to put all of our clothes in a pile so that we see the magnitude of how much we have. I think this chaos method shocks you into the crazy amount we own. I think I would go into full panic attack if I was to do this. I think this would work for someone with a lot of energy as it’s a big job to undertake. I just think this would be way too much for me to do at one time.

As someone who rotates summer/winter clothes, I'm kind of doing this system anyway.
If I'm ever unsure about an item, I make myself wear it for a day when I'm at home. Either I'll know immediately that it should go, or I'll find myself wondering why I don't wear it since I like it. Very helpful.

  • @catherinelain1370
    @catherinelain1370 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +17

I like this method. One day the light bulb went on and I realized I can only wear so much in a week or 2. I found I was gravitating to the same tops or jeans. I also found I bought tops and jeans I thought were soooo cute but in reality were some fantasy clothes-lol. I kept clothes hoping to lose weight and fit back in them. And when I finally lost the weight a couple of years later, put on the outfit and yes, it fit but now was outdated and didn’t look right on me. I made a decision then to get rid of everything that didn’t fit or clothes that had “memories”. I had pics of myself in them and that is all I needed. I have not missed anything. It is hard at first but then decluttering becomes addictive. As soon as stuff comes into the house, I am pushing stuff out. Everything has a home. It is ongoing but soooooo freeing - no more weight on my shoulders.

I have just done this with my granddaughter's toys, games, books, art supplies, stuffies, etc....whatever was stuffed in her closet, drawers, under the bed etc...at my son's house. He's a single dad and completely overwhelmed by all the millions of tiny pieces that go with all her doll sets, play jewelry, on and on. It was already chaos in her bedroom and playroom. It was so much easier and faster to dump it all and be able to sort into the empty drawers & bins. We had black trash bags for obvious trash, white ones for donations, and clear ones for clothes to wash (then put away or donate).
I brought the donations back to my house to sort further into paper grocery bags that I could staple closed. That way the donation center could handle it better without losing pieces - think small dolls & all their accessories.
It worked well for a quick sort & decide. But, I should mention that my granddaughter was not there! It would not have worked with her there. She would have been rediscovering long lost items left and right that she couldn't part with! We talked beforehand about what she wanted to keep and what could go. In the end, it was a very nice streamlined space where she could find things easily and manage to put things away. Less is more for kids! For all of us! Definitely allows for more creativity and more peace and calm!

To me, chaos decluttering creates a lot of unnecessary work. Why remove items that you know you want to keep, and then have to put all of those items back? I decluttered my entire house by working on one area at a time. As an example, in my closet, I started at one end and removed everything that I wanted to donate, recycle, or trash. When I was finished, I organized by clothing type and color. It was very simple and effective. In my dresser drawers, I removed what I wanted to donate, trash, or recycle. I did the same throughout the remainder of my house, including my garage, and it was very successful for me. I would never have considered unloading everything. To me, that just doesn’t make any sense, especially if you’re already feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of the task.

I think that I still hold onto some clothes in case a specific occasion comes up. I've been retired 4 years now and haven't worn any of them once. I need a capsule wardrobe. I have put myself on a no buy since Jan 2024 except for essentials. it has absolutely freed up my space, my time, and saved me so much money. I still have everything I need or want. I am going to use these method on my clothes again this week and get to my capsule goal. I'll know if I need to add anything and I will choose quality to fill the bill.

@@tarynmaria_ it really helped me during those younger years to stay on top of clothes outgrown. Every spring and fall to see what didn’t fit. Little did I know the great impact that would have over the years. She regularly donates clothing and more, sometimes selling, and maintains a balanced approach with minimalism and having the things she loves and needs. Knowing when it’s ok to part ways with even well loved, but no longer needed, items.

I agree this method makes more sense for a big category at a time, like clothing. or all the stuff in your office (except files), or in a storage room or closet. Yet EVERYthing in your house at once; OY that’s too much. Also this way would be / is extremely gratifying for one whole category/room, closet would be DONE and you’d feel so Proud. Dana K White’s method is a doable amount at a time and put each item where it goes; as she would say “Only progress”. Yet again this Chaos method at the end would be so gratifying.

Maybe you can sew them on top of one of your blankets, that way you can see them and remember the event or just enjoy the print. I only had a few plus a dance costume my granny and I designed and I sewed them on different size sofa pillows. Then you can turn over to other side if you like. Great conversation starters. My son liked them so much, he had me take his old Marine T-shirts and make a couple of pillows for him.❤

It seems to me like it's just a variation of the KonMari method. Especially if you're doing one category at a time. Although "chaos" is a good word for it.
Dumping the contents of an entire room into a big messy pile sounds overwhelming, stressful, and very time-consuming, so it's a nope for me, but everyone is different.
No matter the name of the method, I think the smartest and least stressful way to declutter is the way Taryn did it. One drawer or small area at a time....or two or three drawers if you've got a big chunk of time and a bunch of motivation.

I do like the tackling smaller areas, such as a nightstand or dresser drawers or even a section of the closet. Great video! I’m doing a version of this as we prepare to move after 6 years in this rental. I did a version of it when we moved 6 years ago and had to downsize considerably after being in THAT rental for 9 years. In both situations my family did a LOT of life and were coming out of pretty heavy living situations and our whole lifestyle was drastically changing so what we were building in the next home was VERY different than our life in the current home….hope that makes sense. lol This move is no different and I’m again asking the question as I pack: “Do I REALLY want/need to take this to a new home to maintain and care for?” NOTHING is going to our new place that doesn’t pass that question. I HATE throwing things into the dumpster/landfills so when I can I re-home as much of the items we are unloading as a family as I can arrange, but we DO have access to a dumpster here so I don’t have the speed bump of paying for garbage by the bin in this situation which helps me really let loose. I think there is a good space for “chaos” decluttering every couple years. Sometimes we just have to look at what we’ve accumulated and then look at our nice cleaned out “container” such as a drawer or shelf and see it clearly as “wow that clear space looks so good! What in this pile has earned real estate in that nice clear space?”

I agree with you in only doing what one can accomplish in a reasonable amount of time. I would only declutter one drawer at a time especially if they have different types of things in them. Maybe decluttering 2 or 3 drawers at the same time if they have similar types of things in them. Sorting is time consuming and, in my opinion, not really necessary unless your drawers are totally unorganized to begin with. Biting off more than we can chew is good advice!

The only way I would consider doing that is if I had already decluttered using Dana K. White’s method, but still found I needed to do more and was stuck. Or something had just spilled in all my drawers and had to take everything out.

So watching this video brought up all kinds of uncomfortable emotions. Back when I was a teenager, my mother took a picture of my room showing the totality of chaos stemming from me not putting things away with clothes strewn all about the room. It's hard to explain how I felt when I came home from school, and I saw that picture placed on my bed, in the middle of all the strewn dirty and clean 0:00 clothes. It's kind of between embarrassment to anger to humiliation to betrayal that she would do that behind my back. And the end result really didn't make me change my habits. I realize now that she didn't know how to give me consequences in a healthy way to take responsibility for my room. My mother is deceased now and part of me wishes I could have had a conversation with her in my adult life expressing that I was sorry for the situation and letting her know that I can feel her frustration and maybe her embarrassment too, at that point in time.
This video is also a reminder that I did not handle one of my daughters who had an extremely messy room too. Long story short on her, she had extremely emotional and mental health issues and was a troubled daughter. My husband and I did not know how to parent her in healthy ways or understand what was going on. She ended up in a treatment center, which was such a blessing in helping my husband and I parent her differently and she learned how to understand herself and together we all made the changes for a more healthy and happy household. Anyway your video opened up a Pandora box of emotions and now that I'm older and wiser lol, I can see the benefits of doing this dumping, to my OWN stuff but not anybody else's. Thank you for your gift of honesty and thought.

Ahhh it's so hard with kids and how to handle things. There's no guidebook and every kid is different so we can only do the best we can. Thank you so much for sharing - it's good to share this way so we can all learn from each other ❤

Since then there are different schools of thought and I might have handled my daughter's situation differently from what I learned. In a healthy tone I might have set the parameters/my expectations that she was welcome to keep her room however she wanted as long as she's not encouraging mice to enter lol, and keep her door closed so we all didn't have to see her mess. And she would be totally responsible for her own laundry of washing, drying and putting her own clothes back into her room. And if she chose to wear dirty clothes/wrinkled, it would be a reflection on her...not me. And yes she had ADHD which after understanding help me why she had no interest in keeping things clean or tidy.

I would rather sometimes get through f.e. 1 drawer in the "no mess method". Especially if you have kids. I also keep moving /changing places for furniture & things 1x in year. It give me overview & than during that decluttering is easy. I also keep separate "dirty/home/garden" clothes from "going out home", if you have kids under 14 it really helps as I'm constantly need to clean or cook something & forget to wear my apron 😂 I don't know is like this just in my home ?

Unlike Marie Kondo, I don't like mess so this method is not for me. That's not to say I won't do this on a much smaller scale like you discussed, though. For instance, today I emptied 1 kitchen drawer (with baggies, parchment paper, etc.) to give it a good cleaning, declutter as necessary, and then return the keepers in an organized way.

If I have the time and energy, putting everything in a pile, or emptying the area/room, works best for me. Then I only put back what I use. That said, I only start this if leaving the pile out for a few days is going to be okay just in case I run out of that time and energy. It works but it also causes procrastination if “I can’t do it perfectly.” 🤦‍♀️

This may go against the whole purpose of Chaos Decluttering, but I would think that just dumping everything out could lead to disposing of items that you may regret at a later date. You become overwhelmed and just start getting rid of everything. I'm not saying that you have to dwell over every item, but making a spur of the moment decision may not be in your best interest.

I can see how this method could be helpful. If I did this it would force me to actually deal with my clothing and make decisions right then.
I do keep my drawers and closet organized. I tend to be a bit OCD, as my mom taught me to sort my hanging clothes by item (short sleeve shirts, long sleeve shirts, pants, jeans, dresses, etc.) & color code them from light to dark. I continue to do this and never have to search for anything. I hang my nice T-shirts since I have a large walk-in closet.
I do need to declutter and began the Swedish death cleaning method but got waylaid due to health issues. The Swedes begin this around age 50, going through everything so that a huge job isn't left when they pass away. I'm 70, and I don't want to leave a mess for my daughter. I also have a thumb drive with my important info, including life insurance, retirement, and more, in a place she's aware of.
I love how you share information and now watch all your videos!

I don't even like the thought of this. First of all I couldn't physically go through it all in a short period of time. I have arthritis in my hands, knees and back. I had several surgeries and have screws, rods and pins in my body. I am 62. Not old old but definitely no Spring chicken. I live with other people. I wouldn't want to impose this chaos on them. One of the reasons I wouldn't like Marie Kondo's methods. And if I overwhelmed myself I would get discouraged. But I definitely have to do SOMETHING. I have way too much stuff 🤦‍♀️🧏‍♀️
