Already boasting a CV dripping with Group 1 victories, including the previous year’s Cox Plate, Northerly entered the 2002 Caulfield Cup having recently won all of the Craiglee, Underwood and Turnbull Stakes.
Affectionately known by his countless adoring fans as “The Fighting Tiger,” not only did the Fred Kersley-trained champion carry the number one saddlecloth, but was asked to carry two kilograms more than second top weight Universal Prince, and a further 1-½kg or more than the remainder of a field, including subsequent dual Cox Plate winner Fields Of Omagh; a tough task in any handicap, let alone the most gruelling mile-and-a-half race in the country.
Despite his impost - which would be the most oppressive for any horse since Ming Dynasty lumped the same 58kg in 1980 - Northerly started the race as 9-2 favourite. Had odds been offered in the run, his starting price may have doubled given the task set for him under jockey Greg Childs: sitting on the pace, outside the leader. Often the rapid undoing of horses in the Caulfield Cup.
But Northerly, of course, was capable of unbelievable things.
It is difficult to do justice to Northerly’s achievement in winning the 2002 Caulfield Cup as he did into words; best to take in the replay, and bask in the glory of one of the golden moments of the Australian turf.
Northerly is one of those special horses. If you love horse racing then you love Northerly. Born practically dead and revived on the spot. That's where he got his streetfighter character. Floated across the Nullarbor with Mum to South Australia as a foal, the genius of Fred Kersley which again added to Northerly's toughness. A real champion of the Australian turf who will forever be a special part of history at Caulfield. His victories at group two and one level were nothing short of awesome. I get emotional and chills when I watch his Caulfield Cup win. Taking the lead at the 600 and his determination to stay there all the way! RIP you legend.
The Northerly Sunline Lonhro era of the late 90s and early 2000s was just amazing. And Northerly came out on top. So great to see the love for him on here nearly 20 years later!
I never tire of watching this great race, this great horse. FOO was a bloody good horse, who won his first Cox plate after northerly retired. This is truly one of the best Caulfield cups of all time.
So how great was northerly? Beat a previous two times winner in Sunline and beat a preceding two times winner in old fields. He should have 5 probably 6 cox plates

Northerly owned the spring of 2002. No other ifs or buts about it. He repeated Tobin Bronzes wfa and Caulfield Cup record winning sequence. The quality of his opposition one of the best in decades. Old Fields won the Cox plate the year after!!!

Very nice ride.
When the speed went out, he put the speed back on again. Asking Northerly to sit and sprint with 59?kg was a big ask, so kept him rolling and ran away from them, knowing that he was on a good horse.
Was it Greg Childs?
