My dad was a garbage man. As a kid, I remember him coming home smelling like a landfill. He worked very hard to support my mom and I. He got a CDL and eventually scored a well paying local job in our hometown driving a roll off truck. His job became a lot easier since the truck he drove did most of the work. He retired from public works after almost 30 years back in 2020. Thanks for doing this video! A lot of people underestimate how hard that job is physically. Great video! Some good additions showing more frustrations of this job would have been them doing a pre trip inspection only to find multiple flat tires, a broken headlight, several gallons low on hydraulic fluid, tons of garbage behind the packer panel, and a dirty cab from coworkers who don’t take care of the trucks. Also adding the truck breaking down at some point during the route (significant hydraulic leak most likely) and needing to take an old crappy spare that has the same problems found during that pre trip. Also let’s not forget the angry Karen’s and the people who overfill their barrels, don’t bag their garbage, I could go on forever. I’ve been a garbage truck operator for over 3 years, I’ve seen it all. I’m not criticizing your video at all I just wanted to add some things. Thank you for making a video about this line of work.
I love these videos! I’m glad I don’t have to do it, but it just makes me appreciate these workers that get the minimum appreciation from the public. Since you guys are at it, can you do a video on sewage workers? They deserve some appreciation as well!

Let me guess, you must not be working for a local city government? The city collectors seem to be as chill as the mailmen, and bosses in city governments aren't on your ass. Decent pay too. AMAZING benefits. Some get pensions. I considered applying before going back to school. Or you work for a waste monopoly like WM? If so, then I pity you.
Agreed. 🙏 as they say: "not all heroes wear -caps- capes"... 🧢 P.S: garbage collecting can be replaced by AI and robotics, can't it? This really should [readily] be the case. But those robots need to be protected from vandals.
Our garbage collection works differently in Australia. we have specially designed "wheelie bins" like a tall thing on wheels that has a coloured lid for either recycling, waste or compost. we wheel them out onto the road on different days and a truck with a mechanical arm picks them up and empties them into the back of a truck and puts them back down on the gutter (or curb). This probably happens elsewhere other than here. There is usually one of two people operating them and they don't have to leave the truck. Though nothing but respect for the people who work these jobs.
I was a garbage guy for a while. People would disrespect you and treat you like shit, bags would be overfilled to "save a bag". Had some heavy days out there for sure. Best part is the broken bottles everywhere and working the ghetto. They truly don't give a shit about you out there.
We tip the cans, but typically people will overload the bins and throw bags off to the side. We have to get everything. You'll pick a bag off the ground and it rips, throwing shit everywhere. @@Zach-mw5so
@2:25 I mean, while not exactly rich, the pay of a garbageman is still a decent bit more than actual minimum wage, at least in the US. I've known a few guys who did it and even starting out they all got paid around $20-$30USD per hour with lots of 1.5-2X overtime pay and also said they'd occasionally find gold, silver, platinum, jewelry, working electronics, antiques, drugs and other things they were able to resell for an off-the-books bonus.

Today I quit my job as a garbage truck driver/collector. I did it for 2 months and is extremely hard to do it. Breathing in dust from the stuff people throw in their garbage bags. Some of that dust being extremely dangerous. 100 or 140 stops daily . Destroying your knees from climbing up and down the truck. Extremely heavy containers that hurt your back when pushed. Maggots and repulsive smells. 10 to 12 hours of work. Sharing a truck cabin with a dude for said amount of hours. Disagreeing on when to put on the AC, stop for lunch, radio station, etc . Impossible places for a truck to drive into to find a garbage container. Not gonna lie the pay was excellent. Respect for the people who do this for years . Next time you see the garbage man and driver , give them a soda, cigarettes, or a snack . It made our day much better
My job is super white collar. Banker in wealth management. And I have so much respect for garbage collectors I'm often confused when others don't see their value. These guys are absolutely essential.
Garbage collectors deserve more respect, it's a physically demanding job that carries a lot of risk and their work improves our livelihoods as well. Truly underrated job.
My next-door neighbor worked at the county landfill. He had nothing positive to say about it, other than it was a steady wage and he could get health insurance. The landfill was run by some outsourced corporation by the county, they cut corners everywhere safety-wise. Trucks were always getting stuck in mud or flipping over on steep grades. Many of the employees were unreliable degenerates, but rarely would anyone be fired - it's tough work and difficult to get people to show up. My neighbor spent a lot of time spraying some kind of mosquito repellant on top of the trash, and stunk like h311 so that his wife insisted he change clothes before entering the house. He caught COVID a few years ago and died without even being able to collect Social Security from this crummy job.
Right there is why public sanitation, trash pickup, and landfill management should always be directly managed and funded by municipalities (city or county) and the labor force UNIONIZED. They must meet State and Federal guidelines and they are funded and operated to that end. OTOH, a private company will always cut corners to squeeze out a few bucks of profit for the dead weight at the top.
I’ve always looked up to garbage men. I love the big trucks and machines ❤ One time I was allowed to operate the compactor by trash men.❤ still my favorite memories. Garbage men are true hero’s.

I live in apartments and people here are awful. We have 40 units in out part of the area and 40 more in the back. They have to pick the trash up 3 times a week. They throw the trash randomly in the dumpster and I see the workers have to clean the area before he moves the dumpster outside. Sometimes the dumpsters are too full and the trash falls out when they try to move the dumpster. Then the homeless come and tear all the bags open. Thank goodness for these workers. I have a lot of respect for them because otherwise it would be awful to live here with all the trash.

@@account-now-closed nah in canada teachers are overpaid. They make triple that of garbage men for 1/3 the work
They get paid well where im from
@@account-now-closed In the Netherlands their salary is just above minimum wage.
When I was a kid my mom always told me to say thank you to the garbage collectors whenever they were picking up our trash while we were pulling out of the parking lot in the morning
W mom
During hot weather here in Texas, i give my garbage collection men ice cold bottled water. Theey are unsung heros who need more recognition.
Stay strong Wojak
ahhh.. you are the one who made it from a homless person to a good income by selling ice cold bottled water ya?
When I was about 8 I wanted to be a garbage collector. They only came round once a week so I assumed they only worked one day a week and had all the other days off.
😂
i wanted to be an ice cream truck
@@lemonstrangler Well, you can publicly identify as an ice cream truck. I’m sure the Biden administration will shower you with praise for being so inclusive and equitable
The way i can empathize with this it’s incredibile! Your video are amazing man, you always find a simple but efficient way to get to the point! Thank you zero budget stories
as a garbage collector i can confirm our life is like this
Thank you for your service.
It depends what position you work on. Front load, rear load, roll-off, automated side load. I think rear load operators have it the worst.
your house is littered in trash?
@@thepotatoofheaven yeah i didnt clean them out
S/O to all garbage collectors!
You are very important to society ♥
We appreciate the acknowledgement! Remember to sort your recycling!
Agreed. 🙏 as they say: "not all heroes wear -caps- capes"... 🧢
P.S: garbage collecting can be replaced by AI and robotics, can't it? This really should [readily] be the case. But those robots need to be protected from vandals.
Work as a Garbo but do hardwaste collection , legit make 2k a week after taxes for just smashing up furniture so many benefits it’s off its chops

2:18 that scream is always perfect
Our garbage collection works differently in Australia. we have specially designed "wheelie bins" like a tall thing on wheels that has a coloured lid for either recycling, waste or compost. we wheel them out onto the road on different days and a truck with a mechanical arm picks them up and empties them into the back of a truck and puts them back down on the gutter (or curb). This probably happens elsewhere other than here. There is usually one of two people operating them and they don't have to leave the truck. Though nothing but respect for the people who work these jobs.
In the USA as well, but cities are different.
Seriously God bless the workers who these kinds of jobs. Literally keeps the world running. Much respect and they deserve to make way more money
I was a garbage guy for a while. People would disrespect you and treat you like shit, bags would be overfilled to "save a bag". Had some heavy days out there for sure. Best part is the broken bottles everywhere and working the ghetto. They truly don't give a shit about you out there.
Do people not have garbage bins? Every place I’ve lived in the house had recycle and trash bins
We tip the cans, but typically people will overload the bins and throw bags off to the side. We have to get everything. You'll pick a bag off the ground and it rips, throwing shit everywhere. @@Zach-mw5so
In my country, garbage men don't collect bags not in bins.
Being a trash valet, relatable. The worst bags to take are the ones with fluids in them.
I feel you, currently on my last week Job sucks and people don’t even bother bagging their trash properly or even tying them. Can’t wait for this nightmare to end.
He should collect his room’s garbage by himself.
He's a lazy one.
« see you tomorrow for the exact same day » owdamn that Line was so good 😂😂
I’d rather save one sanitation worker than 100 politicians.

I was always under the impression that this was a good job to have. My bro in law was a garbage truck driver in Seattle and made good money. He did work some long days tho.
Welcome to the great show on youtube everybody! Low budget stories where wojak has to take it by hand. Waiting for plumber or sewer maintainer job
Believe it or not I think this job is a step up in life! Training to be the truck driver is expensive where I am & this clip is helping me choose my future.
Ps BITCOIN FEB 2025! ESCAPE
Thank you so much for the donation man! It’s a real pleasure to receive your support!
0:58-Does a garbage collector even afford a psychologist?
Fair point that they keep society running
I had read a story about the garbage cleaners in my school story book, after that day my respect for them and cleanliness of my house and city increased very much
Why do I feel like my entire existence has been spent on ‘Dump It Avenue’
It made our day much better
did you work for your city gov. or a company. From what I can tell City collectors have it decent.

My job is super white collar. Banker in wealth management. And I have so much respect for garbage collectors I'm often confused when others don't see their value. These guys are absolutely essential.
Man I love how real this channel is
As a current garbage collector this video is great, but doesn't truly capture how tough this job can really be.
Gotta admire mooner's upbeat attitude throughout this.
Nailed it.
Here in WA, those gigs pay $40 per hour and lots of OT and vacation. Guys I've met are actually doing pretty well for themselves.
I’ve always looked up to garbage men. I love the big trucks and machines ❤ One time I was allowed to operate the compactor by trash men.❤ still my favorite memories. Garbage men are true hero’s.

The boss gave Chad a tip that was more than the cost of the drink.
Imagine your teacher projecting this video then looking at you intensely 😂
We should respect them 💖, Thanks for making video on this topic
Reality is that Binmen have a pretty comfy job minus waking up early.
When I worked as a binman I often finished work very early and still got paid for the full time
What was your salary?
When he said please not downtown again I felt that 🤣, I used to hate going down them tight ass alleys w mad traffic all around you to make it even harder to back in an alley that is only as wide as the truck w a bunch of phone poles. Plus there was always 10x more work. I do feel bad for the dude in this video for having to hand lift every can
Just try to imagine the world without them.
It would quickly pile up, some people would try to burn it away, most people would take it and dump it in the forest, river, lake or the ocean. The whole world would look like those highly contaminated cities in India.

I work as a Software Engineer (Backend) and honestly thought about working part-time as a garbage collector and enjoying my free time and do some side projects.
Hard work that is taxing on the body can be such a great balance.
But maybe we always want what we don´t have.
One of the most Important yet underrated Jobs. Here in Germany I have a friend who works as one and even if he stinks sometimes (he knows because we tell him) the pay is very good and he needs the money.
Please do life of a factory/warehouse worker. 👍
I have a lot of respect for them because otherwise it would be awful to live here with all the trash.

there was a garbage collector job offer in my town, they offered free license for driving truck plus above average pay, working from 4.30 a.m to 1 p.m. I Sent my candidature a lo of time, still they didn't take me because there is a lot of concurrence. I can't become even a garbage collector😂😂💪
Exactly the same as my job, except I sit in front of a computer all day.
13 to 14 hours of this. Through rain and snow from 100 plus to -20 degrees. This goes without saying a brutal thankless job lol
Garbage collectors are the anchor that holds us. Without them where would all of our garbage go? This job deserves more recognition than "social media influencers"
Not really accurate because garbage collectors make a decent living, have the freedom to work outdoors, and are better respected than most TH-camrs. This whole series is meant to be dark, depressing, and dystopian without offering any bright side. It's disrespectful and not fun to watch. And the supercilious audacity for these "content creators" to criticize hard working people without offering any solution while getting clicks is disturbing.
